Monosomal karyotype (MK) and complex karyotype (CK) are poor prognostic factors in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A comprehensive analysis of cytogenetic and clinical factors influencing an outcome of AML-CK was performed. The impact of cladribine containing induction on treatment results was also evaluated.

Purpose: We report our experience in using the superficial femoral vein to create hemodialysis (HD) arteriovenous (AV) fistulas. Surgery was performed on six patients (four female, two male). Indications for surgery included previous fistula loss, graft infection and exhaustion of typical shunt sites.

Purpose: The problem of long form fistula for hemodialysis is well known among vascular surgeons because of frequent thromboses in anastomotic place. One of the pro-thrombotic factors is suture in the vessel's lumen. Since the 'sleeve' method prevents this, the patency rate should improve.

Background And Aims: One of the factors playing a role in both the aging process and the etiopathogenesis of primary hypertension is oxidative stress. The purpose of this work was to estimate the production of nitric oxide (NO), oxidase activity of ceruloplasmin (Cp) and level of malondialdehyde (MDA), the end-product of lipid peroxidation in the blood of elderly patients with primary hypertension. The influence of treatment with the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor perindopril (P) on the above parameters was also ascertained.

Nasal foreign body in an adult.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

June 2005

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Medical University of Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Foreign bodies of the nose in adults are rare, although they are frequently encountered among children and mentally retarded patients. They are often asymptomatic and consequently may remain undetected for many years. We describe a case of an intranasal foreign body mimicking a nasal lesion.

Acetaminophen belongs to the antipyretic and analgesic drugs most commonly used all over the world. In western Europe, primarily in Great Britain, as well as in the US, increasing incidence of acute liver failure due to the overdose of the drug has been reported. The report presents a description of alcohol-paracetamol syndrome, which led to the development of acute hepatic failure with numerous complications.

Background: The overwhelming majority of myocardial infarctions result from atherosclerosis, generally with superimposed coronary thrombosis. The prevalence of patients who develop myocardial infarction and in whom subsequent angiography shows normal coronary arteries is approximately 5%. Many of these cases are caused by coronary artery spasm and/or thrombosis, perhaps with an underlying endothelial dysfunction of the epicardial coronary arteries.

Metabolic disorders in vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss.

Int Tinnitus J

April 2004

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Ludwig Rydygier Medical University of Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss are common complaints among populations of industrial countries, especially in persons older than 40 years. Numerous agents are known to incite vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss, among them hyperinsulinemia, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia. In this study, we proposed to assess the occurrence of hyperinsulinemia, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia in patients suffering from vertigo, tinnitus, or hearing loss of unknown origin.

The inhibitory effect of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on alpha-adrenergic contraction is quite well known, but molecular mechanism of this inhibition is unclear. In the present study, the interaction between alpha-adrenoceptor and vasopressin receptor response, and LPS in rat tail artery was investigated using chemical stimulation. In the presence of LPS, noradrenaline, phenylephrine and arginine-vasopressin, concentration-response curves (CRCs) were shifted to the right with the change in maximal responses.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of vitamins C and E on malondialdehyde (MDA) content and activities of key antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) as well as glomerular basement membrane (GBM) thickness in streptozotocin-induced diabetic kidney in rats. Wistar male rats were divided into following groups (12 rats each): the control, diabetic rats, diabetic rats whose drinking water was supplemented with vitamin C in a dose of 1.0 g/l or diet was supplemented with 200 mg of vitamin E/100 g fodder.

The relationships between the chemical structure and the antielectrostatic effect of 112 ammonium compounds were analysed using the method of rough sets. The antielectrostatic activity was determined by measurements of the maximum voltage induced. Using the rough sets approach the smallest set of condition attributes significant for high quality of classification has been found.

Typological differentiation of coronary arteries binds to various areas of vascularisation, which could suggest essential differences between vasculatory dimensions. There are not many papers analysing the influence of heart vascularisation on epicardial vessel dimensions during postnatal human life, furthermore, there are hardly any papers dealing with the prenatal period. The subject of examination was 188 human foetuses from 4th to 7th month of prenatal life.

In an evaluation of foetal hearts in II and III pregnancy semester, correlation with exterior foetal dimensions should be taken into consideration. It is interesting also if all exterior heart dimensions are correlated at the same level with overall body dimensions. The subject of examination was 204 foetuses of both sexes, including 106 males and 98 females, in 5th and 6th month of foetal life.

Background: Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is a rare bullous disease of autoimmune etiology. It is an intestinocutaneous syndrome, in which vesicopapular cutaneous lesions are accompanied by gluten-dependent enteropathy. The diagnosis of DH is based on immunopathological investigation of unaffected skin fragment (granular IgA deposits present at the tops of dermal papillae and IgA - EmA present in the serum).

Background: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of verapamil (VP) on lipid peroxidation and activities of key antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px); as well as on glomerular basement membrane (GBM) thickness in streptozotocin-induced diabetic kidney in rats.

Methods: Wistar male rats were divided into three groups, 12 rats each: the control (C), diabetic rats (DR), and DR receiving VP, 7 mg/kg body weight in drinking water (DR + VP). Blood glucose (BG) and HbA(1c) levels, 24-h urinary albumin excretion (UAE) and body weight (BW) were measured every week (0-12 weeks).

Background: Thrombophilia is caused mainly by disturbances of hemostasis involving excessive coagulation system activation, reduction of anticoagulation system (antithrombin III, protein C, protein S, RAPC) or fibrinolytic activity.

Material/methods: In 34 young patients (aged <40 years) with recurrent deep venous thrombosis (>2 incidents) the activity of antithrombin III, protein C, S, platelet count, adhesion and aggregation, APTT, stipven-kephalin, prothrombin time and INR were investigated. Fibrinogen, factor XIII, ELT, FDP, Ag t-PA levels, antigen concentration and PAI-1 activity were determined.

Background: Bacteria of the Klebsiella genus may cause numerous infections in human, which are often treated with beta-lactam antibiotics. The fundamental mechanism of Klebsiella resistance to penicillins or cephalosporins involves the production of enzymes--extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). Because of resistance of many Klebsiella spp.
