Time perspective as a moderator of a relationship between preoperative pain and acute postoperative pain.

The aim of this article was to test time perspective as a moderator of the relationship between pain before surgery and acute postoperative pain. Time perspective (ZTPI) and pain before surgery (SF-MPQ) were assessed pre-operatively in 112 patients. The results suggest that past-negative time perspective and fatalistic perspective are significant moderators of the link between preoperative pain and acute postoperative pain.

Atypical spleen tuberculosis in a melanoma patient accidentally detected during a F-FDG PET/CT study: Case report.

The present study, discussed a rare case of a 50-year-old woman who was treated for malignant melanoma and underwent F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) examination for evaluation of disease. F-FDG-PET/CT examination was performed from the top of the head down to the knee using a Gemini TF PET/CT scanner 60 min following intravenous injection of radiotracer with mean activity of 364±75 MBq. Previous performed laboratory test and clinical examination was irrelevant.

Polish Consensus on Treatment of Gastric Cancer; update 2017.

The "Polish Research on Gastric Cancer" project has been continued since 1986. The main aim of this project, which is a multicenter and interdisciplinary research, is enhancing the treatment results of gastric cancer patients by developing and promoting the use of optimal methods for diagnosis and treatment, both surgical as well as combined. One of the more important achievements of the project is the development and publication of a document named "Polish Consensus on Treatment of Patients with Gastric Cancer", whose first version was published in 1998.

Anal fistula (AF) is a pathological connection between anus and skin in its surroundings. The main reason for the formation of anal fistula is a bacterial infection of the glands within the anal crypts. One of the modern techniques for the treatment of fistulas that do not interfere with the sphincters consists in implantation of a plug made from collagen material.

Angiogenesis and cancer stem cells: New perspectives on therapy of ovarian cancer.

Failure in ovarian cancer therapy, following cytoreduction and chemotherapy, is related to the presence of cancer stem cells - a small subpopulation of cells resistant to chemotherapy and irradiation - in the tumour which may cause cancer relapse and manifestation of metastases. Therapies targeted at Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs), such as those employing metformin (a drug used in the treatment of diabetes type II) and salinomycin, an antibiotic isolated from Streptococcus albus bacteria, seem promising. Anti-angiogenic therapy with bevacizumab was found to be effective in all phases of ovarian cancer treatment.

Introduction: Patients with chronic rheumatoid arthritis (RA) need advice in order to face the problems of everyday life, as well as suffering associated with the disease. Health professionals should attempt to raise the level of resourcefulness and independence of the patient.

Objective: To assess the relationship between the deficit of knowledge about RA and the degree of pain, fatigue, morning stiffness, assessment of disease activity as well as functional efficiency.

VATS left upper lobectomy after CABG with LIMA-LAD bypass graft.

Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy has been proven to be a safe operation associated with a low complication rate and good long-term results comparable to those obtained by the thoracotomy approach. During the development of thoracoscopic anatomical lung cancer resections, eligibility criteria for the operation have been gradually extended. Currently, even as complicated cases as bronchial and vascular sleeve resections or pneumonectomies are being performed by VATS.

NDM-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Poland, 2012-14: inter-regional outbreak of Klebsiella pneumoniae ST11 and sporadic cases.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to characterize New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolates reported in Poland in 2012-14.

Methods: Representative isolates were typed by PFGE and MLST. NDM and other β-lactamase genes were amplified and sequenced.

Adoptive therapy with donor lymphocyte infusion after allogenic hematopoietic SCT in pediatric patients.

The aim of this study was to analyse the experience of Polish Pediatric Group for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in respect to donor lymphocyte infusion procedure. The study included 51 pediatric patients with malignant (45) and non-malignant (6) diseases treated with DLI in the period 1993-2012. The indications for DLI were as follows: (1) increasing recipient chimerism after non-ablative hematopoietic SCT (18 patients); (2) immunomodulation after a reduced intensity conditioning regimen (2 patients); (3) increase in minimal residual disease detection (3 patients); and (4) relapse (28 patients).

Beta-glucuronidase and Beta-glucosidase activity in stool specimens of children with inflammatory bowel disease.

The aim of the study was to analyze the differences in the activity of beta-glucuronidase and beta-glucosidase in stool specimens of children with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) and healthy subjects. The disease activity was determined according to the PCDAI scale (Crohn disease) and Truelove-Witts scale (Ulcerative colitis). Enzyme activity was determined by spectrophotometry.

Linguistic and cultural adaptation into Polish of the IKDC 2000 subjective knee evaluation form and the Lysholm scale.

Purpose: The aim of the following paper was Polish cultural and linguistic adaptation including adaptation of particular questions, instructions and possible answers to 2000 IKDC knee form and Lysholm's scale.

Material/methods: The cultural adaptation process of this questionnaire was made according to indicators of International Quality of Life Assessment (IQOLA) project, placed in Journal of Clinical Epidemiology. Testing version (pre-final test) was carried out on 30 patients suffering from instability of a knee.

A prospective comparison of four methods of endovenous thermal ablation.

The aim of the study was to compare clinical and duplex Doppler results of treatment of varicose veins with four methods of endovenous thermal ablation (EVTA).Material and methods. The results of treatment of varicose veins with 980 nm laser (EVLA980) in 67 extremities, with a radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in 43 extremities, with 810 nm laser (EVLA810) in 46 extremities and with 1470 nm laser (EVLA1470) in 15 extremities were prospectively analyzed.

The presence of facial nerve weakness on diagnosis of a parotid gland malignant process.

The objectives of this article are to assess the frequency and significance of facial paralysis and undiagnosed nerve infiltration in patients with parotid malignancies. 103 patients with parotid gland malignancies were treated in a single institution, the tertiary center for ENT at the University Department in Poznan between 1996 and 2006. Facial palsy at the initial presentation was found in 32 patients.

Utility of measurements of abdominal perfusion pressure as a measure of isovolemic status and intestinal perfusion in patients with ruptured aortic aneurysm.

Analysis of the efficacy of screening tests in colorectal cancer by faecal occult blood test--own experience.

Local anesthesia in thyroid surgery--own experience and literature review.

Majority of centers performing thyroid surgery with local anesthesia have possibility to convert to the general anesthesia. The aim of the study was to present our experiences with partial thyroidectomy under local anesthesia performed in 49 consecutive subjects in the Central African Republic (bilateral subtotal strumectomy, total resection of the one lobe, subtotal resection of the one lobe).

Usefulness of magnetic resonance enterography in diagnosis of Crohn's disease.

Lymphatic angioma of mesentery of the small intestine: a case report.

The authors presented a rare case of lymphatic angioma of mesentery of the small intestine. The patient underwent successful surgery. The study presents clinical symptoms, diagnostic and therapeutic problems in patients with lymphatic angiomas.

Bone tissue metabolism in men with ankylosing spondylitis.

Purpose: The aim of the study was the composite estimation of bone tissue metabolism in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) after having taken into account such factors as a high risk of incidence of osteoporosis in patients with AS and potential danger of permanent immobility.

Material And Methods: Sixty-six patients with established diagnosis of AS and 63 healthy individuals in the control group were included into the study. To measure bone mineral density (BMD) the dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) method was used.
