Ongoing legalization of cannabis for recreational use contributes to increasing numbers not only of incidents of driving under the influence, but within all forensic fields. In addition, newly emerging cannabinoids such as hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) and the increasing use of cannabidiol (CBD) products have to be addressed. Within the amygdala, a distinct class of evolutionarily conserved neurons form the intercalated cell (ITC) clusters, mainly located around the boundaries of the lateral and basal nuclei. Here, we review the anatomical, physiological and molecular characteristics of ITCs, and detail the organization of ITC clusters and their connectivity with one another and other brain regions.

Reported tick-borne-encephalitis (TBE) cases have been increasing in Western Austria, but no data are available on vaccination- and infection-specific seroprevalence. Evaluating diagnostic test accuracy during epidemics is difficult due to an urgent need for test availability, changing disease prevalence and pathogen characteristics, and constantly evolving testing aims and applications. Based on lessons learned during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we introduce a framework for rapid diagnostic test development, evaluation, and validation during outbreaks of emerging infections. The framework is based on the feedback loop between test accuracy evaluation, modelling studies for public health decision-making, and impact of public health interventions.
