Objectives: Many studies have explored the association between handgrip strength and metabolic syndrome; however, the findings are inconsistent due to the different types of indicators used to assess handgrip strength (absolute vs. relative handgrip strength). This prospective cohort study aimed to simultaneously investigate the associations of both absolute and relative handgrip strength with metabolic syndrome, and to compare the predictive abilities of these two measures among Chinese adults.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoantibody-triggered central nervous system (CNS) demyelinating disease that primarily affects the spinal cord, optic nerves and brainstem. Among the first responders to CNS injury, microglia are prominent players that drive NMOSD lesion formation. However, the key molecular switches controlling the detrimental activity of microglia in NMOSD are poorly understood.

Background: The association of a combination of the TyG index and obesity markers, specifically waist circumference (WC), with cognitive function is unknown. This research investigated the relationship between TyG-WC measurements and cognitive impairment in a low-income population in China; moreover, this study evaluated the role of diabetes mellitus and body mass index (BMI) in modulating this relationship.
Methods: 1125 eligible individuals aged ≥ 60 years participated in this study.

Background: Machine learning (ML) has been widely applied to predict the outcomes of numerous diseases. The current study aimed to develop a prognostic prediction model using machine learning algorithms and identify risk factors associated with residual back pain in patients with osteoporotic vertebrae compression fracture (OVCF) following percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP).
Methods: A total of 863 OVCF patients who underwent PVP surgery were enrolled and analyzed.

Salivary iodine is considered a potential indicator for assessing iodine nutrition status. However, there is currently a lack of research data on the characteristics of salivary iodine concentration (SIC) in the elderly population. To evaluate the characteristics of SIC and assess its efficacy in diagnosing thyroid disorders among the elderly population, a cross-sectional study was conducted in a high-iodine area.

Objective: Bloodstream infection (BSI) during the peripartum period is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. However, data on maternal BSI during hospitalization for delivery are limited. This study aimed to investigate the incidence, clinical characteristics, risk factors, microbiological features, and antibiotic resistance patterns of maternal peripartum BSI, with a focus on understanding the role of premature rupture of membranes (PROM), fever, and other risk factors in its development.

Introduction: AKK-derived outer membrane vesicles (AKK-OMVs) have shown potential in modulating intestinal mucosal immunity by increasing the number of intestinal goblet cells. However, it remains unclear whether AKK-OMVs can directly regulate MUC2 secretion in goblet cells exposed to indomethacin and the underlying mechanisms involved.
Methods: The abnormal mucin secretion model in LS174T cells was established using indomethacin, with treatment including (AKK) supernatant, AKK-OMVs, and extracellular vesicle removal supernatant.

Iodine is critical for thyroid hormone synthesis and developmental programming in the first 1000 days of life. The effect of maternal iodine on milk protein secretion remains unknown. We aimed to explore the effect of long-term maternal iodine deficiency and excess on milk protein secretion in lactating rats and its mechanisms preliminarily.

Background: The burden of atrial fibrillation (AF) in the intensive care unit (ICU) remains heavy. Glycaemic control is important in the AF management. Glycaemic variability (GV), an emerging marker of glycaemic control, is associated with unfavourable prognosis, and abnormal GV is prevalent in ICUs.

Background: The association between physical activity (PA) and cognitive function remains controversial, and the impact of gender on this association remains underexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between PA and cognitive function and to explore whether this association was modified by gender among older adults.
Methods: In 2016, a cluster sampling method was used to select community-dwelling older adults aged 65 and above.

Over the past decades, a large number of immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive treatments have been approved to treat central nervous system (CNS) demyelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Owing to the heterogeneity of patients with CNS demyelinating diseases, there is no clinical treatment that can adequately control all disease subtypes. Although significant progress has been made for relapsing-remitting MS, effective management of the progressive phase of MS has not yet been achieved.

Background: Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and metabolic syndrome (MetS) have a high prevalence of co-morbidities and both pose a significant threat to human health and survival. It has been suggested that Hp infection affects the development of MetS in the host, but the causal relationship between the two has not been confirmed.
Methods: We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization study to investigate the causal effect of Hp infection with MetS and its components.

Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with the grading of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), high-risk HPV infection, multiple HPV infections, high HPV load, HPV infection of surgical margin, and age in CIN after conization. The immune mechanism is complex and is primarily related to vaginal microecology disorders, immune escape, immune response impairment, and the release of regulatory cytokines. Currently, the treatment methods for postoperative persistent HPV infection include surgical treatment, antiviral treatment, vaccination, and other approaches.

Background: Diastolic heart failure (DHF) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) often coexist, causing increased mortality rates. Glycaemic variability (GV) exacerbates cardiovascular complications, but its impact on outcomes in patients with DHF and T2DM remains unclear. This study examined the relationships between GV with mortality outcomes, and developed a machine learning (ML) model for long-term mortality in these patients.

Background: Ectopic thyroid tissue is a developmental disorder and is extraordinarily rare to occur in the central airway. To our knowledge, nearly few reports of primary ectopic thyroid carcinoma in the central airway with a normal eutopic thyroid gland have been published to date. This is the second case about malignant central airway obstruction caused by primary ectopic thyroid carcinoma.

Resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) has revealed functional changes at the cortical level in degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) patients. The aim of this study was to systematically integrate static and dynamic functional connectivity (FC) to unveil abnormalities of functional networks of DCM patients and to analyze the prognostic value of these abnormalities for patients using resting-state fMRI. In this study, we collected clinical data and fMRI data from 44 DCM patients and 39 healthy controls (HC).
