Indian J Nephrol

May 2024

Department of Nephrology, NIMS, Hyderabad, Telangana, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Urine sediment analysis is a simple and cost-effective diagnostic tool that is underused but vital for diagnosing kidney diseases, especially acute kidney injury (AKI).
  • AKI can lead to serious complications, including higher mortality, longer hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs, making timely identification crucial.
  • Automated urine analysis has limitations in detecting critical indicators like pathological casts and dysmorphic red blood cells, highlighting the importance of mastering traditional urine sediment analysis for better patient care.

Introduction: Liver biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing and staging non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but liver biopsy has its limitations. Non-invasive tests (NITs) eliminate many of the drawbacks of liver biopsy. We did a retrospective observational study to validate the NAFLD Fibrosis Score (NFS score) and Fibrosis Score 4 (FIB-4 index) against the gold standard liver biopsy in a cohort of South Indian patients with NAFLD.

Background: There has been a significant increase in the incidence of recurrent, resistant, and extensive dermatophyte infections worldwide recently. This menace has spurred the need for more well-designed randomized controlled trials to optimize the treatment of dermatophyte skin infections. One of the limitations in designing such studies is the limited availability of standard and validated score, to measure the severity of dermatophyte infections.

Background And Aims: Laparoscopic lower abdominal surgeries involve carbon dioxide (CO) insufflation and Trendelenburg position. The raised intra-abdominal pressure can increase intracranial pressure (ICP) and alter cerebral blood flow. This study was conducted to determine the effect of pneumoperitoneum and Trendelenburg position on ICP and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) measured using transcranial Doppler (TCD).

Objective: The study aims to equip both Obstetricians and Gynaecologists with the knowledge of clinical conditions that will benefit from interventional radiology, equipment and materials that are commonly used, benefits, complications and the side effects of these techniques.

Methods: It was a single-centre, retrospective cohort study with examples from hospital practice during the period of 2015 to 2021, acquired through computerised database including all obstetrics and gynecological cases in which interventional radiology techniques were used. No statistical analysis of data was applicable as it was a single-centre retrospective analysis of cases.

Subclinical Rhythmic Electroencephalographic Discharges of Adults (SREDA) is a benign EEG variant characterized by sharply contoured rhythmic theta activity occurring bilaterally with maximum activity over the parietal or the posterior head region. These paroxysms are not associated with any objective or subjective clinical manifestations. SREDA, the rarest and last reported benign EEG pattern with no known clinical significance yet, is detailed in this case report.

Unlabelled: Isolated pulmonary valve (PV) infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare entity accounting for <2 % of all cases of IE. Risk of PV IE in patients with atrial septal defect (ASD) is considered negligible and there have only been a few cases reported to date. We describe a case of a 51-year-old woman with an ostium secundum ASD with associated PV endocarditis, who presented with multiple pulmonary septic emboli.

Introduction: This simulation study on MRI of the knee was performed to assess the risk of injury to the popliteal artery (PA) and common peroneal nerve (CPN) during all-inside meniscal repairs in adults.

Methods: We simulated repair of the posterior horn of both medial (PHMM) and lateral menisci (PHLM) through anteromedial (AM) and anterolateral (AL) portals, using straight and curved devices, on 200 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans taken with the knee in extension. For simulation using straight devices, the shortest distance from the menisco-capsular junction (MCJ) and the free edge of the meniscus to PA and CPN in vectors of AM and AL portals was measured.
