Pemphigus vulgaris is a rare autoimmune blistering disease. Estimation of the incidence in Iran is one patient per 100,000 of the population per year. Mycophenolate mofetil is an immunosuppressive drug and successful treatment of pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigoid has been reported with it, in combination with high dose prednisone, or as monotherapy.

Purpose: Modern implantology uses techniques that can provide function, esthetics, and comfort with a minimally invasive surgical approach. Flapless implant surgery has been proposed to fulfill these requirements. Traditionally, flapless implant surgery was carried out by using a tissue punch technique, which may be potentially harmful because of the inherent blindness of the technique.

Purpose: Oral contrast is usually administered in most X-ray computed tomography (CT) examinations of the abdomen and the pelvis as it allows more accurate identification of the bowel and facilitates the interpretation of abdominal and pelvic CT studies. However, the misclassification of contrast medium with high-density bone in CT-based attenuation correction (CTAC) is known to generate artifacts in the attenuation map (mumap), thus resulting in overcorrection for attenuation of positron emission tomography (PET) images. In this study, we developed an automated algorithm for segmentation and classification of regions containing oral contrast medium to correct for artifacts in CT-attenuation-corrected PET images using the segmented contrast correction (SCC) algorithm.

Box 14155-6455, Tehran, IranMedical Nanotechnology Research Centre, Medical Sciences/University of Tehran, Tehran, P.O. Box 14155-6451, Iran.

This research is an effort to further understand the physicochemical interaction between the novel drug, mitoxantrone (MTX) and its biologic receptor, DNA. The ultimate goal is to design drugs that interact more with DNA. Understanding the physicochemical properties of the drug as well as the mechanism by which it interacts with DNA, it should ultimately allow the rational design of novel anti-cancer or anti-viral drugs.

Many research studies have been conducted on the use of conjugated polymers in the construction of chemical sensors including potentiometric, conductometric and amperometric sensors or biosensors over the last decade. The induction of conductivity on conjugated polymers by treating them with suitable oxidizing agents won Heeger, MacDiarmid and Shirakawa the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Common conjugated polymers are poly(acetylene)s, poly(pyrrole)s, poly(thiophene)s, poly(terthiophene)s, poly(aniline)s, poly(fluorine)s, poly(3-alkylthiophene)s, polytetrathiafulvalenes, polynapthalenes, poly(p-phenylene sulfide), poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), polyparaphenylene, polyazulene, polyparaphenylene sulfide, polycarbazole and polydiaminonaphthalene.

One-third of lithium-treated men complain from sexual dysfunction, although the exact mechanisms of which are not yet known. In this study we investigated the effect of chronic lithium (LiCl, 600 mg/l for 30 days) administration on the neurogenic relaxation of isolated rat corpus cavernosum. The corporal strips were precontracted with phenylephrine and electrical field stimulation (EFS) was applied to obtain relaxation.

Cannabinoids are psychoactive compounds with many pharmacological properties such as analgesia, sedation and catalepsy most of which are mediated by cannabinoid CB1 receptors. In the present study, we evaluated whether the ovarian sex hormones are involved in the cannabinoid-induced catalepsy and analgesia in ovariectomized female mice. Female NMRI mice (weighing 25-30 g) were divided into 3 main groups: unoperated, sham-operated and ovariectomized.

Objectives: Absorption of the fluid used for bladder irrigation during transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) may disturb the circulatory system and lead to clinical symptoms known as the transurethral resection syndrome. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in electrolytes in patients who had undergone TURP.

Methods: For all the cases with benign prostatic hypertrophy enrolled in the present study, TURP was performed as recommended in Miller's Anesthesia, the sixth edition.

Recurrent meningitis caused by cervico-medullary abscess, a rare presentation.

Childs Nerv Syst

June 2008

Department of Neurosurgery, Children's Hospital Medical Center, Medical Sciences/University of Tehran, 14155-7854, Tehran, Iran.

Background: Recurrent bacterial meningitis is usually a complication of cranial anatomical defect or the result of impaired humoral immunity, notably, defects of the complement system and agammaglobulinemia. It could present a diverse range of symptoms.

Discussion: Meningitis as a presentation of intramedullary abscess is not common.

The objective of this work was to examine the time-dependent pro-oxidant versus antioxidant effect of various doses of vitamin E used commonly in experimental studies. Erythrocyte activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT) and plasma lipid peroxidation levels were investigated following biweekly intramuscular administration of 100, 300 and 600 mg/kg of vitamin E at a baseline time point, and additionally at 2, 4 and 6 weeks after initiating treatment. Vitamin E had an antioxidant effect when administered at low doses over short time periods, and increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Ionophore incorporated PVC membrane sensors are well-established analyticaltools routinely used for the selective and direct measurement of a wide variety of differentions in complex biological and environmental samples. Potentiometric sensors have someoutstanding advantages including simple design and operation, wide linear dynamic range, relatively fast response and rational selectivity. The vital component of such plasticizedPVC members is the ionophore involved, defining the selectivity of the electrodes' complexformation.

Background: The use of dendritic cells (DCs) as a cellular adjuvant provides a promising approach in immunotherapy of cancer. It has been demonstrated that Listeria monocytogenes activated DCs pulsed ex vivo with tumor antigens trigger a systemic Th1-biased specific immune response and a single dose of this vaccine will cause a considerable anti tumor immunity.

Objective: The present study was designed to evaluate the ability of multiple doses of tumor antigen-pulsed DCs, matured in the presence of Listeria monocytogenes components in induction of a potent anti-tumor response and the prevention of tumor formation in an experimental model.

Various Leishmania antigens showed to induce protection when used with IL-12 as an adjuvant in an animal model of leishmaniasis. Limitations in using IL-12 justify searching for an appropriate adjuvant to accelerate induction of a Th1-type immune response and protection. In this study, the role of Mycobacterium vaccae as an adjuvant mixed with either autoclaved Leishmania major (ALM) or freeze-thawed-killed L.

November 2008

Department of Pediatrics, Infectious Disease Research Center, Children's Medical Center, Medical Sciences/University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran.

Oral polio vaccine (OPV) has been used safely and efficiently for more than 40 years in preventive medicine. Vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) is a rare adverse event of OPV due to reversion of the vaccine strain virus to a neurovirulent strain. VAPP can occur in healthy recipients or their close contacts.
