Judgment on rightness and wrongness of beliefs and behaviors is a main issue in bioethics. Over centuries, big philosophers and ethicists have been discussing the suitable tools to determine which act is morally sound and which one is not. Emerging the contemporary bioethics in the West has resulted in a misconception that absolute westernized principles would be appropriate tools for ethical decision making in different cultures.

Renal ischemia and direct toxic effect of contrast media are the main confounding causes of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). The effect of different contrast mediums on the resistance of renal artery is quite unclear. The aim of the present study was to assess the resistive index (RI) changes of renal segmental artery in color Doppler duplex sonography after injection of two different contrast mediums: iodixanol and iohexol.

Background: General anesthesia and regional anesthesia have both been shown to be suitable techniques for patients undergoing lower thoracic and lumbar spine surgery; however, GA is the most frequently used method. The purpose of this study was to conduct an acceptable RCT to compare the intraoperative parameters and postoperative outcome after SA and GA in patients undergoing elective lumbar disk surgery.

Methods: Patients undergoing laminectomy for herniated lumbar disk during the years 2005 and 2007 were enrolled.

Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major hospital pathogen and typically shows resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents. The susceptibility patterns of 109 MRSA isolates to aminoglycoside antibiotics were determined by the disk diffusion method. Genes encoding the aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes (AMEs) were targeted by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays.

Objective: To analyze the effects of a Qigong program on various parameters of unstimulated saliva, including volume, pH and secretory immunoglobulin A (S-IgA) level.

Methods: Twice a day from the beginning of Fall 2005, twenty-three healthy volunteers aged 22-24 did special Qigong exercises and massage of acupuncture points which stimulated the energy cycle and increased body water energy. The unstimulated saliva volume and pH were recorded every week in Spring (April, May, June) 2005 before the volunteers started to learn and exercise Qigong, and after Qigong intervention in Spring (April, May, June) 2006.

January 2008

Immunology, Asthma and Allergy Research Institute, Medical Sciences/University of Tehran, Tehran, IR, Iran.

Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and drug allergies- as a subset of ADRs- make a significant public health concern, complicating 5 to 15% of therapeutic drug courses. They may result in diminished quality of life, increased physician visits, health care costs, hospitalizations, and even death. The incidence of serious ADRs in hospitalized patients was estimated to be 6.

We describe a 32-year-old man who presented in a febrile, unconscious state with unusual staphylococcal endocarditis. We diagnosed the patient's illness by using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), which revealed a giant vegetation on the left ventricular lateral wall. The patient had history of aortic valve replacement and coarctoplasty.

The present study evaluated the development of tolerance to the anticonvulsant effect of morphine in a mouse model of clonic seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole, and whether ultra-low doses of the opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone which selectively block G(s) opioid receptors were capable of preventing the observed tolerance. The results showed that the morphine anticonvulsant effect could be subject to tolerance after repeated administration. Both the development and expression of tolerance were inhibited by ultra-low doses of naltrexone, suggesting the possible involvement of G(s)-coupled opioid receptors in the development of tolerance to the anticonvulsant effect of morphine.

A simple, sensitive, rapid and specific enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for quantitative measurement of aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)) in urine samples was developed in this study. Polyclonal antibodies were raised against a C(1)-carboxymethyl oxime (CMO) derivative of AFB(1) conjugated bovine serum albumin (BSA). AFB(1)-C(8)-penicillinase (AFB(1)-C(8)-P) and AFB(1)-C(1)-carboxymethyl oxime-penicillinase (AFB(1)-CMO-P) were prepared and used as tracer molecule.

Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4) is a well-known molecule that regulates T cell activity, with polymorphisms at different regions of this gene having been associated with autoimmune conditions. Pretibial myxedema (PTM), also called Graves' dermopathy, is an autoimmune extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease. We opted to investigate the relationship between three single nucleotide polymorphisms of the CTLA-4 gene (+49A/G, and -318C/T and -1147C/T) and PTM in Iranian patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO).

Background: Thiopentone has a protective effect as far as succinylcholine-induced myalgias are concerned; however, a few studies were done in the efficacy of thiopentone on fasciculation induced by succinylcholine. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of thiopentone on onset, duration, and severity of fasciculation caused by succinylcholine injection.

Methods: Three hundred patients, in American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification I and II, undergoing elective ocular surgery at Farabi Eye Hospital in 2003 were considered and divided into 2 groups who received intravenous succinylcholine immediately and 30 seconds after thiopentone injection, respectively.

In this study, 3-alkyl and 3-aryl esters of hexahydroquinoline derivatives were screened for their ability to decrease bacterial resistance to ciprofloxacin (CAS 85721-33-1), which is extensively used to treat bacterial infections. A group of 3-alkyl and 3-aryl esters of hexahydroquinoline derivatives in which 2-aryl thiazole is substituted at 4-position were synthesized. The enhancement of the antibacterial activity of ciprofloxacin by these new synthetic compounds was evaluated against a resistant clinical strain of Staphylococcus aureus.

Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology Research Center, Amir-A'lam Hospital, Medical Sciences/University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran.

Objectives: We report a rare case of auricular involvement by leishmaniasis, in order to demonstrate the importance of thorough investigation of cutaneous head and neck lesions, and also the importance of inclusion of infections such as leishmaniasis in the differential diagnosis of auricular lesions, especially in endemic areas.

Case History: A 42-year-old man with multiple lesions on his head, neck and hands was referred to our centre. He had the following lesions: a painful, crusted, 8 x 8 cm plaque with indurated margins on the left parotid region and auricle; a red papule on the right temporal region; an ulcerative lesion on the skin overlying the proximal interphalangeal joint of the fifth finger of the right hand; and a bluish papule on the neck.
