Background: Slow coronary flow (SCF) is slow dye progression in the coronary arteries during selective angiography, but there is no such study about greater visceral vessels. Studies have suggested that flow-mediated dilation (FMD) is impaired in SCF. Endothelial function can be assessed by FMD in the brachial artery as ischemia-induced vasodilation.

Background: Postoperative sore throat is a common problem. The efficacy of topical application of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in alleviating postoperative sore throat has not been established. Our aim was to evaluate the analgesic effects of diclofenac epolamine patch on postoperative sore throat.

A considerable proportion of bone fractures show signs of delayed or impaired healing. A novel device that applies interfragmentary compressive forces to the fracture site was developed and evaluated for its effect on fracture healing. The midshafts of the right tibias of 16 rabbits were osteotomized, leaving a 2-mm gap.

Background And Aims: Valvular atherosclerosis is defined as extra- and intracellular lipid deposition, thickening of the fibrosa layer, decreased thickness of the spongiosa, and chronic inflammation. We sought to identify the predictive factors for valvular atherosclerosis and assess the possible associations between valvular atherosclerosis and coronary atherosclerosis using the Gensini score.
Methods: Between January 2004 and May 2008, 1400 adult patients underwent mitral or aortic valvular surgery with or without coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) at our center.

Aims: To assess the association of insulin resistance with increased urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in a cohort of Iranian Type 2 diabetic patients.
Methods: Three hundred and sixty-one men and 472 women with Type 2 diabetes were enrolled from three different outpatient clinics (Tehran, Iran) during the period 2005-2008. Patients with obstructive uropathy, severe heart failure, liver disease, cancer, autoimmune disease and macroalbuminuria were not included.

Cannabinoid system plays a pivotal role in the seizure threshold modulation which is mainly mediated through activation of the cannabinoid CB(1) receptor. There is also several evidence of interaction between cannabinoid system and other neurotransmitters including nitric oxide (NO) system. Using model of clonic seizure induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) in male NMRI mice, we investigated whether NO is involved in the effects of cannabinoids on the seizure threshold.

Dermal sinuses have been associated with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic to drainage of purulent material from the sinus tract, inclusion tumors, meningitis, and spinal abscess. To date, there has been no documented report of brain abscess as a complication of spinal dermal sinus. Here, we report an 8-month-old girl who was presented initially with a brain abscess at early infancy but lumbar dermal sinus and associated spinal abscess were discovered afterwards.

Some foods are prone to contamination with aflatoxins, with detrimental effect on human health. Lactic acid bacteria have been reported to bind aflatoxins and remove them from foods and feeds. Reduction of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) from the liquid media by the autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus fermentum) isolated from traditional Iranian sourdough and dairy products is reported in the current study.

Anopheles superpictus Grassi is one of the most widespread malaria vectors in Iran. Two morphologically independent forms of this mosquito, both at larval and adult stage as well as a great diversity in its mtDNA loci have been previously described in Iran. Because of existence of mtDNA haplotypes, co-occurrence of two forms in diverse climates as well as different roles of populations played in malaria transmission, we hypothesized the possibility of emerging species (or sub-species) within the taxon.

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the in vitro mucoadhesion and permeation enhancement properties of thiolated chitosan (chitosan-glutathione) coated poly(hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) nanoparticles. Core-shell nanoparticles were prepared by radical emulsion polymerization method initiated by cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate. Different molecular weights of chitosan were utilized for nanoparticles preparation.

Objective: Evaluating renal function by calculating creatinine clearance as an alternative measure to serum creatinine may give a better estimation of postoperative renal function in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.
Methods: Using our database, we conducted a retrospective review of the records of all 11,884 patients aged 21 years or older undergoing pure bypass grafting who required cardiopulmonary bypass. Preoperative renal function was categorized as normal renal function (serum creatinine =1.

A dynamic model of an above-knee prosthesis during the complete gait cycle was developed. The model was based on a two-dimensional multi-body mechanical system and included a hydraulic and an elastic controller for the knee and a kinematical driver controller for the prosthetic ankle. The equations of motion were driven using Lagrange method.

A two-dimensional temperature estimation method has been proposed based on the detection of shifts in speckle pattern location of ultrasound B-Mode digital images from a region of tissue undergoing thermal therapy. The speckle pattern shifts were due to the local temperature dependence of sound speed and thermal expansion in the heated region. Here in this paper we made use of optical-flow in order to achieve a better accuracy and lower computational burden.
