There is an increasing body of evidence that the central nervous system is affected by cholestatic liver disorders. Cholestasis has been shown to result in a decreased seizure propensity which is believed to be mediated by an increased opioidergic tone and nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathway. In this study, we used a reversible chemically-induced cholestasis model in mice to investigate the changes in seizure susceptibility.

N'-(2-hydroxy-1,2-diphenylethylidene)benzohydrazide (HDB) was found tohave a very selective and sensitive behavior towards erbium(III) ions, in comparison tothirteen lanthanide ions, inner transition and representative metal ions and was hence usedas a neutral ion carrier in construction of an Er(III) microelectrode. Theoretical calculationsand conductance studies of HDB to erbium and some other metal ions were carried out andconfirmed selectivity toward Er(III) ions. The best performance was obtained with a membrane contain 3% potassium tetrakis(p-chlorophenyl)borate (KTpClPB) as an anionic additive, 72% dibutyl phthalate (DBP) assolvent mediator, 5% HDB, and 20% poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC).

A sizeable proportion (1-10%) of healthy adults and to lesser extent neonates vaccinated with triple 10 microg hepatitis B (HB) vaccine fail to mount a protective antibody response. Revaccination with the same vaccine dose has proved to be effective in a significant number of primary non-responders. The influence of revaccination with lower vaccine doses however has not been studied adequately in non-responder neonates.

Paraquat (PQ) is a highly toxic herbicide that is used in most of the countries without restriction. The cytotoxic effect of PQ is mediated by radicals, which are the products of PQ reduction in cells. The anti-oxidative action of captopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, appears to be through its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species.

Computer-aided mass detection on digitized mammograms using adaptive thresholding and fuzzy entropy.

Annu Int Conf IEEE Eng Med Biol Soc

March 2008

Department of Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering, School of Medicine, Medical Sciences / University of Tehran, Tehran-Iran.

In this paper, a segmentation method for detection of masses in digitized mammograms has been developed using two parallel approaches: adaptive thresholding method and fuzzy entropy feature as a CAD scheme. The algorithm consists of the following steps: a) Preprocessing of the digitized mammograms including identification of region of interest (ROI) as candidate for massive lesion through breast region extraction, b) Image enhancement using linear transformation and subtracting enhanced from the original image, c) Characterization of the ROI by extracting the fuzzy entropy feature, d) Local adaptive thresholding for segmentation of mass areas, e) Combine expert of the last two parallel approaches for mass detection. The proposed method was tested on 78 mammograms (30 normal & 48 cancerous) from the BIRADS and local databases.

Morphological heart arrhythmia classification using Hermitian model of higher-order statistics.

Annu Int Conf IEEE Eng Med Biol Soc

March 2008

Department of Biomedical Systems & Medical Physics, School of Medicine, Medical Sciences/University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran.

This paper presents the results of morphological heart arrhythmia detection based on parameters which are obtained from modeling of the cumulants of the electrocardiography, ECG, signals. Cumulants possess many properties that make them effective tools to describe morphological variations of non-stationary signals. Among these properties, the two most attractive founded for analysis of ECG arrhythmia detections are the ability of suppressing morphological variations of different beats of ECG signals belonging to a specific class of heart arrhythmia and reducing the effect of Gaussian noise on the classification significantly.
