Article Synopsis
  • Accumulation of hyaluronan (HA) in the lungs is a common response to lung injury, particularly during Nb infection, which leads to tissue damage and prompts a type 2 immune response.
  • HA levels peaked seven days post-infection, correlating with lung damage and immune involvement, specifically characterized by eosinophils and increased IL-13 cytokines.
  • The study shows that HA accumulation is dependent on IL-13, highlighting its role in regulating the HA matrix and supporting lung tissue repair during inflammatory responses.

HPV/pap tests are widely used for cervical cancer screening, playing a crucial role in early diagnosis and guiding future treatment options. However, approximately 50% of cervical cancer patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, which is associated with higher recurrence rates and poorer survival outcomes than early-stage diagnoses. This underscores the need for effective treatments for advanced-stage cervical cancer.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy of a novel topical dressing (composed of triamcinolone, ground Dianthus caryophyllus, eugenol, honey, and Iris germanica) for alveolar osteitis (dry socket) against Alvogyl® (composed of eugenol, butamben, and iodoform).

Material And Methods: In a randomized parallel-armed clinical trial at Mashhad Dental School's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 36 patients with alveolar osteitis were randomly allocated into two groups according to the inclusion criteria (n=18), using sealed envelopes: one receiving a novel topical dressing and the other receiving Alvogyl®. Post-treatment pain was assessed using a visual analog scale immediately after the procedure and at 30 and 60 minutes, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours, and one week later, as well as the frequency of dressing applications and analgesic usage.

NAD reloaded: Hacking bacterial defenses.

Cell Chem Biol

November 2024

Structural Molecular Biology Group, Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Protein Research, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences University of Copenhagen, Blegdamsvej 3B, 2200 Copenhagen, Denmark. Electronic address:

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is an essential metabolite, and its depletion serves as a common bacterial immune strategy against bacteriophages (phages). In a recent issue of Nature, Osterman et al. reveal two phage-encoded NAD restoration pathways, showcasing the phages' innovative counterstrategies against bacterial immunity and providing insights for developing novel antimicrobial approaches.

Introduction: In Saudi Arabia, the HPV vaccine is administered to young females through school-based immunization programs; however, the program's efficacy depends on parental consent, with physicians acting as primary determinants in parental decision-making regarding HPV vaccination.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 128 physicians and assessed their knowledge and attitudes toward cervical cancer, HPV, and the HPV vaccine, and unraveled predictors of HPV vaccine acceptability and factors that would influence recommending the vaccine.

Results: Although the major factor that influenced recommending the vaccine negatively was the fear of vaccine side effects, a positive influence of the physician's personal reading (91%), recommendations from colleagues (88%), and government directives (87%) provided reassurance and increased confidence in recommending the vaccine.

Acaricidal, larvacidal, and repellent activity of Linalool loaded zinc oxide nanoparticles against Hyalomma anatolicum.

Trop Biomed

September 2024

General Science Department, Deanship of Supportive Studies, Alasala University, P. O. Box 12666, Dammam 31483, Saudi Arabia.

Current strategies for tick control have led to the development of resistance and environmental contamination. Consequently, there is an urgent need for research into new and effective acaricides for tick control. The aim of this study was to fabricate and characterize Linalool loaded zinc oxide nanoparticles (Lin@ZNP), and to assess the acaricidal, larvacidal, and repellent activities of Lin@ ZNP against Hyalomma anatolicum, a prevalent tick species infesting cattle in Saudi Arabia.

Despite the recent progress, current treatment modalities are not able to eradicate cancer. We show that Microbeam Radiotherapy (MRT), an innovative type of Spatially Fractionated Radiotherapy, can control murine melanoma by activating the host's own immune system. The beneficial effects are very pronounced in comparison to uniform radiotherapy traditionally employed in the clinic.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed 389 patients aged 65 and older with cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) but no bone injury to assess the effects of diabetes on neurological recovery.
  • The research found that there were no significant differences in neurological outcomes between diabetic patients and those without diabetes at 6 months post-injury.
  • Additionally, moderate-severe diabetes did not adversely impact recovery, suggesting that diabetic patients had similar improvements in neurological function as their nondiabetic counterparts.

  • * Findings reveal that SMC4 is overexpressed in COAD tissues, linked to poor patient prognosis, and affects cell proliferation, migration, and autophagy.
  • * SMC4's levels are associated with immune cell infiltration, specifically M2 macrophages and CD4+ T cells, suggesting its potential as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in COAD.

Innovative Cancer Immunotherapy with MAGE-A3 mRNA Cancer Vaccines.

Cancers (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science, Yonsei University, Wonju 26493, Republic of Korea.

Cancer causes over 10 million deaths annually worldwide and remains a significant global health challenge. This study investigated advanced immunotherapy strategies, focusing on mRNA vaccines that target tumor-specific antigens to activate the immune system. We developed a novel mRNA vaccine using O,O'-dimyristyl-N-lysyl aspartate (DMKD) to improve stability and phosphatidylserine (PS) to enhance antigen presentation to immune cells.

Sepsis and septic shock are life-threatening systemic inflammatory conditions and among the most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality globally. Preclinical evidence has identified a number of diazepine-based compounds with therapeutic potential in inflammatory diseases. However, the potential anti-inflammatory properties of diazepines in the overwhelming immune response during sepsis have been rarely examined.

Article Synopsis
  • Dysphagia, a serious swallowing disorder, affects older adults post-spinal cord injury, particularly those with cervical injuries, though its risk factors are not well understood.
  • A study involving 707 patients aged 65 and older identified male sex, low nutritional status (GNRI <92), dementia, fractures, complete paralysis, anterior surgery, and tracheostomy as significant risk factors for dysphagia.
  • The findings suggest that a low geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) is a key indicator of dysphagia risk, implying that nutritional health is critical for recovery in elderly patients with cervical spinal injuries.

Background: This study aims to establish cutoff values for the one-minute sit-to-stand test (1STST) to predict physical performance in mild-post- coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) individuals and to compare the 1STST with the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) in assessing hemodynamic response and to explore the correlation between 1STST, 6MWT, and muscle strength, including leg and respiratory muscle strength.

Methods: A cross-sectional study of 93 participants with mild post-COVID-19 symptoms was conducted. Sociodemographic and anthropometric data were collected, and pulmonary function, as well as respiratory and quadriceps muscle strength, were evaluated.
