LOT and HOT … or not. The proliferation of clinically insignificant and poorly characterised types of renal neoplasia.

Pathology

December 2022

Aquesta Uropathology, Brisbane, Qld, Australia; Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Otago, Wellington, New Zealand; Southern Community Laboratories, Wellington, New Zealand. Electronic address:

The classification of malignant tumours is influenced by both immunohistochemical and molecular genetic findings. This is highlighted in the latest World Health Organization classification of renal neoplasia, which has a tumour category of 'tumours that are molecularly defined'. This implies that the defining molecular features are integral to tumourigenesis, which may not necessarily be the case.

PTEN PDZ-binding domain suppresses mammary carcinogenesis in the MMTV-PyMT breast cancer model.

Cancer Lett

August 2018

School of Biomedical Sciences, Room 705, Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China. Electronic address:

Phosphatase and tension homolog (PTEN) is a potent tumor suppressor that possesses a PDZ-binding domain (PDZ-BD) at the end of its carboxyl terminus, whose functions during tumorigenesis remains unclear. Here, we crossed a mouse strain with germline deletion of PTEN PDZ-BD with MMTV-PyMT breast cancer model, and found that knockout (KO) mice display normal development of mammary glands, but have both increased breast tumorigenicity and lung metastasis. Orthotopic allograft experiments suggest the loss of PTEN PDZ-BD in breast cancer cells rather than in tumor microenvironment plays a prominent role in increasing tumor burden.

Phase II study of single-agent cabozantinib in patients with recurrent clear cell ovarian, primary peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer (NRG-GY001).

Gynecol Oncol

July 2018

Department of Gynecologic Oncology & Reproductive Medicine, Unit 1362, The University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, United States. Electronic address:

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of cabozantinib in recurrent clear cell ovarian, primary peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer.

Methods: Patients with recurrent ovarian, fallopian or primary peritoneal tumors with at least 50% clear cell histomorphology, measurable disease, one or two prior regimens and ECOG performance status 0-2 received cabozantinib 60 mg orally once daily continuously, in 4-week cycles until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Primary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS) at six months and complete or partial tumor response (as assessed by RECIST 1.

Background: Medical therapy is widely used for managing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and has made an impact on the profile of patients who ultimately undergo surgery. This changing profile may impact outcomes of surgery and associated complications. To assess the impact of medical management, we evaluated the profile of patients who had surgery for BPH at our institution.

The radiobiology of prostate cancer including new aspects of fractionated radiotherapy.

Acta Oncol

September 2005

Emeritus of Medical School of Wisconsin University, Department of Human Oncology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.

Total radiation dose is not a reliable measure of biological effect when dose-per-fraction or dose-rate is changed. Large differences in biological effectiveness (per gray) are seen between the 2 Gy doses of external beam radiotherapy and the large boost doses given at high dose-rate from afterloading sources. The effects are profoundly different in rapidly or slowly proliferating tissues, that is for most tumors versus late complications.

We studied 62 patients aged 48 years as an average and diagnosed with bilateral optical neuropathy during an epidemics in Pinar del Río province. Of these patients, 42 showed the optical form whereas 20 had the mixed form of optical neuropathy. We researched into the levels of formate and folate in serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples and we found a marked deficiency of folates in more than 50% of samples and high formate concentration levels in almost 25% of samples.
