Background: Endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy (E-NSM) is a promising procedure in the treatment of breast cancer, but the limitations of endoscopic tools and intrinsic technical complexity of the technique hinder its applicability. Here, we introduce a novel surgery, gasless endoscopic transaxillary subcutaneous mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with implants (GETSMIRI), for breast cancer. and early effects.

Calculation of Likelihood Ratios for Incest Cases Using IBD Patterns.

Fa Yi Xue Za Zhi

June 2023

Department of Forensic Medicine, Zhongshan Medical School of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510089, China.

Objectives: To calculate the likelihood ratios of incest cases using identity by descent (IBD) patterns.

Methods: The unique IBD pattern was formed by denoting the alleles from the members in a pedigree with a same digital. The probability of each IBD pattern was obtained by multiplying the prior probability by the frequency of non-IBD alleles.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is particularly critical for pain information processing. Peripheral nerve injury triggers neuronal hyper-excitability in the ACC and mediates descending facilitation to the spinal dorsal horn. The mechanically gated ion channel Piezo1 is involved in the transmission of pain information in the peripheral nervous system.

J Neuroinflammation

June 2022

Pain Research Center and Department of Physiology, Zhongshan Medical School of Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disease, 74 Zhongshan Rd. 2, Guangzhou, 510080, People's Republic of China.

Background: Peripheral nerve inflammation or lesion can affect contralateral healthy structures, and thus result in mirror-image pain. Supraspinal structures play important roles in the occurrence of mirror pain. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a first-order cortical region that responds to painful stimuli.

Currently, the Han population in China may be comprised of different genetic groups due to geographic, cultural and economic factors. Understanding population structure is very important for forensic purposes. However, knowledge of the genetic substructure within the whole Han population in China is still limited.

Objective: To date, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have proven to function as key regulators in tumorigenesis. Among these lncRNAs, MEG3 displays low levels in various neoplasms and tumor cell lines. However, the regulatory mechanism of MEG3 and MIR-376B-3P, one of the microRNAs from downstream gene clusters of the DLK1-MEG3 locus, remains insufficiently defined.

Background: Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD)-related disorders are the major causes of low back pain. A previous study suggested that Notch activation serves as a protective mechanism and is a part of the compensatory response that maintains the necessary resident nucleus pulposus (NP) cell proliferation to replace lost or non-functional cells. However, the exact mechanism remains to be determined.

Tumor suppressor miR-145-5p sensitizes prolactinoma to bromocriptine by downregulating TPT1.

J Endocrinol Invest

June 2019

Department of Histology and Embryology, Medical School of Sun Yat-sen University, No. 74, Zhongshan Road 2, Guangzhou, 510080, Guangdong, China.

Purpose: Prolactinoma is the most commonly seen secretory tumor of pituitary glands, which accounts for approximately up to 40% of total pituitary adenomas. Due to its high drug resistance, dopamine agonist, such as bromocriptine, has limited effect on the treatment of patients with prolactinoma. Recent discoveries have revealed that multiple miRNAs were involved in regulating drug resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to identify risk factors linked to the severity of non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) in Southern China, highlighting the need for early interventions due to the global impact of low back pain on daily activities.
  • Researchers collected data from over 1,000 NSLBP patients using surveys, evaluating factors such as education, body mass index (BMI), and lifestyle habits, finding significant correlations with pain intensity.
  • Key findings indicate that lower education levels, higher BMI, prolonged driving, smoking, and a history of recurrent low back pain contribute to increased pain severity, suggesting that lifestyle changes could help alleviate symptoms.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest with Do-Not-Resuscitate orders signed in hospital: Who are the survivors?

Resuscitation

June 2018

Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center, 5323 Harry Hines BLVD, Dallas, TX 75390-8579, USA.

Background: Signing Do-Not-Resuscitate orders is an important element contributing to a worse prognosis for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). However, our data showed that some of those OHCA patients with Do-Not-Resuscitate orders signed in hospital survived to hospital discharge, and even recovered with favorable neurological function. In this study, we described their clinical features and identified those factors that were associated with better outcomes.

Calpain-2 Regulates TNF-α Expression Associated with Neuropathic Pain Following Motor Nerve Injury.

Neuroscience

April 2018

Pain Research Center and Department of Physiology, Zhongshan Medical School of Sun Yat-Sen University, 74 Zhongshan Rd. 2, Guangzhou 510080, PR China. Electronic address:

Both calpain-2 (CALP2) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) contribute to persistent bilateral hypersensitivity in animals subjected to L5 ventral root transection (L5-VRT), a model of selective motor fiber injury without sensory nerve damage. However, specific upstream mechanisms regulating TNF-α overexpression and possible relationships linking CALP2 and TNF-α have not yet been investigated in this model. We examined changes in CALP2 and TNF-α protein levels and alterations in bilateral mechanical threshold within 24 h following L5-VRT model injury.

No significant departure from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium or genetic linkage disequilibrium was observed (after Bonferroni correction). The expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.

Previous work from our laboratory showed that motor nerve injury by lumbar 5 ventral root transection (L5-VRT) led to interleukin-6 (IL-6) over-expression in bilateral spinal cord, and that intrathecal administration of IL-6 neutralizing antibody delayed the induction of mechanical allodynia in bilateral hind paws. However, early events and upstream mechanisms underlying spinal IL-6 expression following L5-VRT require elucidation. The model of L5-VRT was used to induce neuropathic pain, which was assessed with von Frey hairs and the plantar tester in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats.

Background: There remains controversy over the prognostic significance of spontaneous shockable rhythm conversion in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients with initial non-shockable heart rhythms (pulseless electrical activity [PEA] or asystole). The aim of this study was to examine the association of shockable rhythm conversion with multiple OHCA outcomes, and to explore effect modifiers.

Prolactinomas are the most prevalent functional pituitary adenomas. The preferred treatments for prolactinomas are dopamine agonists (DAs) such as bromocriptine (BRC), but DAs still have the challenges of tumor recurrence and drug resistance. This study demonstrates that the synergy of function and mechanism between artesunate (ART) and BRC inhibits prolactinoma cell growth in vitro.
