Deriving keratinocytes from epidermis or oral mucosa is a critical first step in the construction of cell-based tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. It would be advantageous to develop a methodology to grow adult somatic cells with maximum plasticity in a rapid fashion and in large numbers with minimal manipulation. With routine methods, keratinocytes are cultured in standard amount of medium and passaged with enzymes, and the confluence of the monolayer induces differentiation and eventual cell death.

Hypermethylation leads to bone morphogenetic protein 6 downregulation in hepatocellular carcinoma.

PLoS One

September 2014

State Key Laboratory of Oncogenes & Related Genes, Shanghai Cancer Institute, Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Background: In the liver, bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP-6) maintains balanced iron metabolism. However, the mechanism that underlies greater BMP-6 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissue than adjacent non-cancerous tissue is unclear. This study sought to investigate the epigenetic mechanisms of BMP-6 expression by analysing the relationship between the DNA methylation status of BMP-6 and the expression of BMP-6.

Article Synopsis
  • β type titanium alloys are popular in biomedical applications due to their non-toxic elements, high corrosion resistance, and good compatibility with biological tissues.
  • A new alloy, Ti35Nb3Zr2Ta, was created with a Young's modulus of 48 GPa and was tested for corrosion resistance and cell response.
  • Results showed that Ti35Nb3Zr2Ta has similar corrosion resistance to the standard Ti6Al4V but allows for better osteoblast attachment and growth, indicating it may be a strong candidate for surgical implants.

Controversy exists regarding the clinical and radiological differences in outcomes between fixed-bearing (FB) and mobile-bearing (MB) total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) at the mid- or long-term follow-up. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that have evaluated FB and MB TKAs. We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in the Cochrane Library, Medline and Embase.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide and is caused by the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations in regulatory genes. In this study, we used methylight to detect the methylation status of the RASSF1A promoter in 87 paired HCC samples and analysed the relationship between methylation status and clinicopathological parameters, including prognosis after surgery. We found that the methylation level of the RASSF1A promoter in HCC tissues was significantly higher than that in the corresponding non-tumorous tissues (p<0.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common disease prevalent in elderly men. However, the genetic determinants of BPH remain unclear. Because BPH and prostate cancer (PCa) share some common pathological characteristics, we investigated whether susceptibility loci for PCa contributed to BPH risk and BPH aggressiveness in Chinese men.

Prevalence and risk factor for MDR-GNB infection in liver transplantation.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

January 2013

Department of General Surgery, Shanghai First People Hospital, Medical School of Shanghai Jiaotong University, 85 Wu Jing Road, 200080, Shanghai, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Liver transplantation (LT) is an effective treatment for end-stage liver diseases, but infections from multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacilli (MDR-GNB) are becoming more common among recipients, especially shortly after the procedure.
  • These MDR-GNB infections are now a leading cause of mortality post-LT, with factors such as the severity of underlying diseases and acute rejection contributing to the risk.
  • To reduce the incidence of these infections, improvements in LT techniques, careful management of antibiotics and immunosuppressants, and better understanding of risk factors are necessary for enhancing patient outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at why small liver transplants (called SFSLT) in rats sometimes fail and lead to poor survival.
  • Researchers used different sizes of liver transplants in rats and checked how well the liver cells responded and whether they were dying.
  • They found that the smallest transplants caused the most damage, leading to very low survival rates, and figured out that serious injury when blood flow returns is a big part of why these small liver transplants don't work well.
