Colonic organoids are three-dimensional organotypic cultures of the colonic stem cells or pluripotent stem cells. Its essence is the culture of colonic stem cells or pluripotent stem cells, and their derived intestinal epithelial cells, intestinal endocrine cells and goblet cells in basement membrane extract with specific growth factors. Colonic organoids are comprised of all major types of colonic epithelial cells and represent the architecture and function remarkably similar to those of the colonic epithelium, faithfully recapitulating the functional colonic epithelium ex vivo.

Aims: Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a leading cause of cardiomyocyte loss and subsequent ventricular dysfunction after restoring the coronary blood flow and contributes to considerable increase in morbidity and mortality. Resveratrol has been declared to confer cardioprotection against and ex vivo myocardial I/R injury. Here, we have sought to investigate the effects of preconditioning with resveratrol on myocardial I/R damage across the small animal studies.

Background: The efficacy and safety of adjuvant substrate modification (SM; either linear ablation [LA] or complex fractionated atrial electrogram [CFAE] ablation) in addition to pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for the treatment of symptomatic, drug-refractory atrial fibrillation (AF), have still not been clarified and need further assessment.
Method: We systematically searched the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Cochrane databases for studies comparing PVI with adjunctive SM versus PVI alone for treatment of drug-refractory AF.
Results: Twenty-six (26) studies including 3,409 patients (1,975 PVI + SM; 1,434 PVI alone) were included for further analysis.

During cardiac arrest and return of spontaneous circulation (CA-ROSC), autophagosome clearance in the cortex is progressively impaired, but the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in this process and the mechanism underlying the autophagy impairment remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the impacts of ROS on the autophagy-lysosome pathway after CA-ROSC in rats. Cortices from CA-ROSC rats revealed accumulation of LC3, p62 and ubiquitin, indicating impaired autophagic flux.

Malignant pheochromocytoma is exactly diagnosed only upon the occurrence of metastatic foci. At that point, however, patients are less likely to experience many benefits from traditional chemotherapy. Therefore, a strategy worthy of consideration is inhibition or delay of metastasis with drugs.

Methods: Fifty-six patients undergoing ovarian stimulation (OS) with gonadotropin releasing hormone antagonist and frozen embryo transfer with hormone replacement treatment (HRT) were recruited. Endometrial secretion aspiration was performed repeatedly during implantation window in natural, OS and HRT cycles of every patient.

Objective: Insular lobe gliomas continue to challenge neurosurgeons due to their complex anatomical position. Transcortical and transsylvian corridors remain the primary approaches for reaching the insula, but the adoption of one technique over the other remains controversial. The authors analyzed the transcortical approach of resecting insular gliomas in the context of patient tumor location based on the Berger-Sinai classification, achievable extents of resection (EORs), overall survival (OS), and postsurgical neurological outcome.

Colorectal cancer is a human malignancy ranked the third highest of the global incidence of malignant tumors. Rho GTPase-activating proteins (RHOGAPs) were identified functional in several processes of tumors. In the present study, through reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and western blot analysis, expression of Rho GTPase-activating protein 24 (ARHGAP24) and p53 was measured in colorectal cancer tissues, which was lower than that in adjacent normal tissues, revealing that ARHGAP24 may be implicated in the progress of colorectal cancer and , overexpression of ARHGAP24 in LoVo and HCT116 cells inhibited the cell ability and enhanced cell apoptosis, and accompanied with high protein expression of p53, p21 and Bax.

Chemotherapy is one of the most important approaches for the treatment of various cancers. However, tumor cells often develop resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. The tumor microenvironment reconstituted by various cytokines secreted from immune cells was recently found to play important roles in affecting therapeutic response of tumor cells.

An increasing amount of evidence reveals that an orchestrated interplay between myeloid subpopulations in the hematopoietic system plays a significant role in supporting normal functions of the immune system and facilitating homeostatic restoration upon exogenous or endogenous insults. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a microsomal enzyme discovered decades ago, can metabolize pro-oxidant heme into biliverdin, free iron, and carbon monoxide. This enzymatic reaction produces biological materials, contributing to major immunomodulatory effects.

Objectives: To determine whether imaging and clinicopathologic features could predict false-positive axillary ultrasound (US) results in the selection of patients with breast cancer who had a heavy axillary tumor burden (≥3 tumor-involved nodes).
Methods: Among 788 patients with histologically confirmed invasive breast cancer at Ruijin Hospital from October 2014 to September 2015, 162 patients (cT1-T2, cN0) with 167 axillae had suspicious axillary US findings. Ultrasound findings were considered suspicious for metastasis if cortical thickening of greater than 3 mm or effacement of the fatty hilum was present.

Levodopa (L‑DOPA) is the gold standard for symptomatic treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD); however, long‑term therapy is associated with the emergence of L‑DOPA‑induced dyskinesia (LID). Nigral dopaminergic cell loss determines the degree of drug exposure and time required for the initial onset of LID. Accumulating evidence indicates that α‑lipoic acid (ALA) decreases this nigral dopaminergic cell loss.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the association between Interleukin-18 (IL-18) gene polymorphisms of the donor and recipient in liver transplant patients with bacterial infections.
Methods: Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs7106524, rs5744247, rs1946518, rs549908 and rs187238) of the IL-18 gene from the donors were genotyped and their association with post-operative bacterial infections was evaluated in liver transplant patients (N=113). A second independent group of liver transplant patients from a different organ transplant centre was also recruited for validation purposes (N=44).

Malignant pheochromocytoma (PHEO) is diagnosed only when metastasis has occurred, making it less likely for patients to obtain the benefits of traditional chemotherapy. Anti-oncogene TP53 mutation has been detected in PHEO and is possibly related to disease progression. However, whether the upregulation of wild-type TP53 has antitumoral effects on PHEO remains completely unknown.

Mercaptopurine is a common chemotherapeutic drug and immunosuppressive agent and plays an important role in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and inflammatory bowel disease. It may cause severe adverse effects such as myelosuppression, which may result in the interruption of treatment or complications including infection or even threaten patients' lives. However, the adverse effects of mercaptopurine show significant racial and individual differences, which reveal the important role of genetic diversity.

Microvesicles (MVs) derived from human mesenchymal stem cells (MSC MVs) were demonstrated to ameliorate inflammation in lungs. We have found their content of mRNA for keratinocyte growth factor was partly involved in their therapeutic effects. As MSC MVs also contained a substantial quantity of angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) mRNA, which plays an essential role in vascular stabilization and resolving inflammation, we hypothesized that Ang-1 mRNA might similarly account for a part of their therapeutic effects.
