Objective: Traditional internal fixation of calcaneus fractures, involving lateral L-shaped incisions and plate fixation, has disadvantages such as increased operative exposure, eccentric plate fixation, and complications. The aim of this study was to design a Spatial Weaving Intra-calcaneal Fixator System (SWIFS) for the treatment of complex calcaneal fractures and to compare its biomechanical properties with those of traditional calcaneal plates.

Methods: The computed tomography (CT) data of the normal adult calcaneus was used for modeling, and the largest trapezoidal column structure was cut and separated from the model and related parameters were measured.

Research Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Ningbo University, Ningbo, 315211, China. Electronic address:

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an essential part of the Chinese medical system and is recognized by the World Health Organization as an important alternative medicine. As an important part of TCM, TCM diagnosis is a method to understand a patient's illness, analyze its state, and identify syndromes. In the long-term clinical diagnosis practice of TCM, four fundamental and effective diagnostic methods of inspection, auscultation-olfaction, inquiry, and palpation (IAOIP) have been formed.

This study aimed to explore whether the relationship between perceptual (rating of perceived exertion; RPE) and mechanical (maximal number of repetitions completed [MNR], fastest set velocity, and mean velocity decline) variables is affected by the length of inter-set rest periods during resistance training sets not leading to failure. Twenty-three physically active individuals (15 men and eight women) randomly completed 12 testing sessions resulting from the combination of two exercises (bench press and bench pull), three inter-set rest protocols (1, 3, and 5 min), and two minimal velocity thresholds (farther from muscular failure [MVT for bench press and MVT for bench pull] and closer to muscular failure [MVT for bench press and MVT for bench pull]). The duration of inter-set rest periods did not have a significant impact on RPE values ( ranged from 0.

BPSegSys: A Brachial Plexus Nerve Trunk Segmentation System Using Deep Learning.

Ultrasound Med Biol

March 2024

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, USA. Electronic address:

Objective: Ultrasound-guided nerve block anesthesia (UGNB) is a high-tech visual nerve block anesthesia method that can be used to observe the target nerve and its surrounding structures, the puncture needle's advancement and local anesthetics spread in real time. The key in UGNB is nerve identification. With the help of deep learning methods, the automatic identification or segmentation of nerves can be realized, assisting doctors in completing nerve block anesthesia accurately and efficiently.

Importance: Treatment strategies for intermediate coronary lesions guided by fractional flow reserve (FFR) and intravascular ultrasonography (IVUS) have shown comparable outcomes. Identifying low-risk deferred vessels to ensure the safe deferral of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and high-risk revascularized vessels that necessitate thorough follow-up can help determine optimal treatment strategies.

Objectives: To investigate outcomes according to treatment types and FFR and IVUS parameters after FFR- or IVUS-guided treatment.

Introduction: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) guided by coronary angiography-derived fractional flow reserve (FFR) or intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) has shown improved clinical outcomes compared with angiography-only-guided PCI. In patients with intermediate stenoses, FFR resulted in fewer coronary interventions and was non-inferior to IVUS with respect to clinical outcomes. However, whether this finding can be applied to angiography-derived FFR in significant coronary artery disease (CAD) remains unclear.

tsRNAs are small non-coding RNAs originating from tRNA that play important roles in a variety of physiological activities such as RNA silencing, ribosome biogenesis, retrotransposition, and epigenetic inheritance, as well as involvement in cellular differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. tsRNA-related abnormalities have a significant influence on the onset, development, and progression of numerous human diseases, including malignant tumors through affecting the cell cycle and specific signaling molecules. This review introduced origins together with tsRNAs classification, providing a summary for regulatory mechanism and physiological function while dysfunctional effect of tsRNAs in digestive system diseases, focusing on the clinical prospects of tsRNAs for diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.

Background: Ras-GTPase-activating protein binding protein 1 (G3BP1) is an oncogenic factor, which highly expressed in a variety of cancers. In recent years, G3BP1 has been reported to promote the development of prostate cancer by inhibiting the degradation of AR through inhibiting SPOP. However, whether G3BP1 contributes in a similar manner to the abnormal accumulation of ERα, which is also an important target for hormone therapy, remains unknown.

Radiotherapy serves as a crucial strategy in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, its efficacy is often hindered by the challenge of radiation resistance. Although the literature suggests that some tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) are associated with various cancers, studies reporting the relationship of tsRNAs with cancer cell radiosensitivity have not been published yet.

Background: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early gastric cancer (EGC) does not always lead to curative resection. Risk factors of lymph node metastasis (LNM)/local cancer residue after non-curative ESD for EGC have not been fully elucidated. We therefore aimed to clarify them and evaluate whether the "eCura system" is reliable for the risk stratification of LNM after non-curative ESD.
