Article Synopsis
  • A study in China looked into how to use 3D technology to accurately find the right size and amount of silicone oil for a special eye treatment called foldable capsular vitreous body (FCVB) surgery for people with severe retinal detachment.
  • They used special software to measure the size of the eye and recommend the correct FCVB size and silicone oil volume, checking their results across five hospitals with over 250 patients.
  • The results showed that the new method helps suggest the best options for doctors, and the surgery seemed to maintain similar vision after the operation compared to before it.

Myoblast is a kind of activated muscle stem cell. Its biological activities, such as proliferation, migration, differentiation, and fusion, play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the skeletal muscle system. These activities of myoblasts can be significantly influenced by the extracellular matrix.

Objective: Both porous metal cones and metaphyseal sleeves are excellent implants for reconstructing severe bone defects in the knee joint, but they both exhibit design limitations. The porous metal cone, especially, has significant room for improvement in its shape design. The existing porous metal cones often feature a conical external surface with a relatively small taper, potentially compromising both rotational and axial stability.

[Research progress of phage therapy in orthopedic implant-related infection].

Zhonghua Wai Ke Za Zhi

December 2023

Department of Orthopedics, the Fourth Medical Center, General Hospital, Chinese People's Liberation Army,Beijing 100048,China.

The widespread application of implantable materials has brought about a corresponding increase in implant-related complications, with implant-associated infections being the most critical. Biofilms, which often form on these implants, can significantly impede the effectiveness of traditional antibiotic therapies. Therefore, strategies such as surgical removal of infected implants and prolonged antibiotic treatment have been acknowledged as effective measures to eradicate these infections.

BMC Med Imaging

September 2023

Department of Radiology, Tianjin First Center Hospital, Tianjin Institute of imaging medicine, School of Medicine, Nankai University, Nankai District, No. 24 Fukang Road, Tianjin, China.

Background: This study aimed to develop a computed tomography (CT) model to predict Ki-67 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to examine the added value of radiomics to clinico-radiological features.

Methods: A total of 208 patients (training set, n = 120; internal test set, n = 51; external validation set, n = 37) with pathologically confirmed HCC who underwent contrast-enhanced CT (CE-CT) within 1 month before surgery were retrospectively included from January 2014 to September 2021. Radiomics features were extracted and selected from three phases of CE-CT images, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression (LASSO) was used to select features, and the rad-score was calculated.

Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) has become the third leading cause of AKI acquired in hospital, lacking of effective interventions. In the study, we identified the renal beneficial role of 2, 2-dimethylthiazolidine hydrochloride (DMTD), a safer compound which is readily hydrolyzed to cysteamine, in the rodent model of CI-AKI. Our data showed that administration of DMTD attenuated the impaired renal function and tubular injury induced by the contrast agent.

World Neurosurg

January 2024

Medical School of Nankai University, Tianjin, China; Department of Neurosurgery, The First Medical Center, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Background: Treatment modalities of ependymoma in infants remain controversial. Postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy could prolong overall survival but has the potential to affect nervous system development in infants. A Handheld Visible Resonance Raman Analyzer Used in Intraoperative Detection of Human Glioma.

Cancers (Basel)

March 2023

Institute for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers, Department of Physics, The City College of the City University of New York, New York, NY 10031, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a significant need for reliable tools to diagnose gliomas during surgery and ensure safe tumor removal, prompting research into innovative methods.
  • Researchers developed the VRR-LRR Raman analyzer, utilizing visible resonance Raman spectroscopy to collect and analyze 2220 VRR spectra from glioma tissues, revealing key molecular differences.
  • The study employed a machine learning technique (PCA-SVM) to accurately differentiate glioma grades from normal tissue, achieving over 80% accuracy compared to traditional histopathology, suggesting the analyzer could transform intraoperative glioma detection and aid in maintaining healthy tissue.

The relationship between Parkinson's disease and gastrointestinal diseases.

Front Aging Neurosci

August 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, First Medical Center, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China.

An increasing number of studies have provided evidence for the hypothesis that the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) may derive from the gut. Firstly, Lewy pathology can be induced in the enteric nervous system (ENS) and be transported to the central nervous system (CNS) via the vagal nerve. Secondly, the altered composition of gut microbiota causes an imbalance between beneficial and deleterious microbial metabolites which interacts with the increased gut permeability and the gut inflammation as well as the systemic inflammation.

Background: With the development of radiology and three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, custom-made 3D-printed titanium augments have been more widely used. However, the radiological and clinical outcomes of custom-made augments lack reports. To better understand the clinical effect of using 3D-printed titanium augments and the significance of accurate placement, the aim of this study was to assess the outcomes when using custom-made 3D-printed titanium augments and to validate the idea that surgical simulation should be done before designing custom-made augments.

Front Microbiol

January 2022

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, The First Medical Center, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China.

Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is one of the main subtypes of esophageal cancer. The incidence rate of EAC increased progressively while the 5-year relative survival rates were poor in the past two decades. The mechanism of EAC has been studied extensively in relation to genetic factors, but less so with respect to human microbiota.
