An anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the opposite sinus (R- ACAOS) with interarterial course is a very rare congenital anomaly with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. A 29-year-old woman was admitted for exertional angina pectoris. A coronary computed tomography angiography with 3D multiplanar reconstruction revealed an R-ACAOS running between the aorta and pulmonary artery with high anatomical features and no ischemia-induced at the stress test.

Recanalized coronary thrombus is a rare and under-recognized condition in interventional practice, however its incidence is steadily increasing with the use of endo-coronary imaging. It has been initially described by pathological studies in approximately one-third of chronic coronary occlusions. It is described as a chronic occlusion that constitutes several endothelium-covered channels separated by septa that converge into a single lumen.

Introduction: Sex-determining region Y-related high-mobility group box 17 protein (SOX17), a proangiogenic transcription factor, is specifically expressed in tumor endothelial cells (TECs) of implanted Lewis lung carcinoma. However, the expression profile of SOX17 is largely unknown in human lung cancer. We aimed to elucidate SOX17 expression in cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment of lung adenocarcinoma.

Introduction: Levothyroxine (L-T4) monotherapy is the standard of care for the treatment of hypothyroidism. A minority of the L-T4-treated patients remain symptomatic and report better outcomes with combination therapy that contains liothyronine (L-T3) or with desiccated thyroid extract (DTE).

Goal: To assess patient preferences in the treatment of hypothyroidism.

High-volume hemofiltration does not protect human kidney endothelial and tubular epithelial cells from septic plasma-induced injury.

Sci Rep

August 2024

Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation Unit, Department of Translational Medicine (DIMET), University of Piemonte Orientale (UPO), "Maggiore Della Carità" University Hospital, via Gen. P. Solaroli 17, 28100, Novara, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • High volume hemofiltration (HVHF) aimed to remove inflammatory substances linked to kidney injury from sepsis, but recent trials showed no improvement in patient outcomes compared to standard volume hemofiltration (SVHF).
  • This study investigated the effects of plasma from patients treated with HVHF or SVHF on various cell types related to inflammation and injury, focusing on leukocyte adhesion and cell damage over time.
  • Findings indicated that while both HVHF and SVHF reduced inflammatory markers temporarily, they did not differ significantly, and septic plasma consistently caused harmful effects on endothelial and tubular epithelial cells, indicating ongoing microvascular injury.

Questionable evidence and argumentation regarding alleged misuse of Medicare.

Aust Health Rev

August 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The Australian National University Medical School of Medicine and Psychology, Canberra Hospital, Canberra, ACT, Australia; and Australian Medical Association, Barton, Canberra, ACT, Australia.

What is known about this topic? We discuss a recently published paper that alleges clinicians are causal agents of non-compliant billing of Medicare. What does this paper add? The paper's arguments are partially supported by unreferenced assertions, potential logical fallacies, inaccurate reporting of referenced material and unsubstantiated rhetoric. What are the implications for practitioners? Due to the lack of substantive evidence, it cannot be concluded that clinicians are the causal agents of non-compliant billing of Medicare.

Article Synopsis
  • The Thr92Ala-DIO2 polymorphism was studied for its impact on depressive symptoms in patients who had moderate to severe COVID-19.
  • A cohort of 273 hospitalized patients was assessed, with post-discharge follow-ups conducted on 68 patients categorized by their depressive status.
  • Results indicated that patients with the Thr/Ala genotype had a significantly lower incidence of depressive symptoms compared to those with Thr/Thr or Ala/Ala genotypes, suggesting a potential protective effect against post-COVID-19 depression.

Introduction: The type 2 deiodinase and its Thr92Ala-DIO2 polymorphism have been linked to clinical outcomes in acute lung injury and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Objective: The objective was to identify a potential association between Thr92Ala-DIO2 polymorphism and body composition (appendicular muscle mass, myosteatosis, and fat distribution) and to determine whether they reflect the severity or mortality associated with the disease.

Methods: In this prospective cohort study (June-August 2020), 181 patients hospitalized with moderate-to-severe COVID-19 underwent a non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the thorax to assess body composition, laboratory tests, and genotyping for the Thr92Ala-DIO2 polymorphism.

Purpose: To compare the degree of myopic regression after myopia correction with either femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) or small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) over 18 months.

Methods: Patients undergoing FS-LASIK or SMILE surgery for myopia correction were retrospectively recruited. The propensity scores were used to match patients by age and preoperative manifest spherical equivalent (SEQ) from these 2 groups.

Background: The nature of the relationship between red meat consumption and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. Through this meta-analysis, we aimed to determine the association and dose-response relationship between red meat consumption (both processed and unprocessed) and the risk of NAFLD.

Methods: We systematically searched CENTRAL, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus from inception to February 2022 for observational studies in which the exposure of interest was red meat consumption; the outcome of interest was the risk of NAFLD; and where odds ratios (ORs) or risk ratios were provided or could be calculated.

Objective: This study aimed to propose treatment protocol and identify patterns of tillaux fractures using three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) analysis and to describe an effective reduction technique.

Methods: Forty-two juvenile patients with tillaux fractures were evaluated with 3D-CT scan for fracture displacement pattern and received surgical treatment. Tillaux fragment was reduced by pushing the superomedial quadrant part of the fragment slightly downward towards the ankle joint from anterolateral to posteromedial through 5-mm skin incisions with mosquito forceps.
