Aims: Recent-onset dilated cardiomyopathy (RODCM) is characterized by heterogeneous aetiology and diverse clinical outcomes, with scarce data on genotype-phenotype correlates. Our aim was to correlate individual RODCM genotypes with left ventricular reverse remodelling (LVRR) and clinical outcomes.

Objectives: There have been significant advances in the medical management of severe postpartum hemorrhage (sPPH) over recent decades, which is reflected in numerous published guidelines. To date, many of the currently available national and international guidelines recommend recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa) to be used only at a very late stage in the course of sPPH, as a "last resort", before or after hysterectomy. Based on new safety data, rFVIIa has recently been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and Swissmedic for use in sPPH, if uterotonics are insufficient to achieve hemostasis, which in fact is significantly earlier in the course of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).

Objectives:  The impact of a change in hemodynamics on cognitive skills in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis (ACS) after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of CEA for ACS at 1 year by assessing the changes in anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral artery blood flow in tandem with changes in cognitive efficiency.

Methods:  Flow volume in cerebral arteries using quantitative magnetic resonance angiography was measured in a group of 14 males and 5 females before and at 1 year after CEA for ACS.

Objective: To study the involvement of the anterior nuclei of the thalamus (ANT) as compared to the involvement of the hippocampus in the processes of encoding and recognition during visual and verbal memory tasks.

Methods: We studied intracerebral recordings in patients with pharmacoresistent epilepsy who underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ANT with depth electrodes implanted bilaterally in the ANT and compared the results with epilepsy surgery candidates with depth electrodes implanted bilaterally in the hippocampus. We recorded the event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by the visual and verbal memory encoding and recognition tasks.

We studied the appearance of broadband oscillatory changes (ranging 2-45 Hz) induced by a cognitive task with two levels of complexity. The event-related de/synchronizations (ERD/S) in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) were evaluated in an executive function test. Four epilepsy surgery candidates with intracerebral electrodes implanted in the ACC and three Parkinson's disease patients with externalized deep brain stimulation electrodes implanted in the STN participated in the study.

Dementia after DBS Surgery: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We report the case history of a 75-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease who developed severe cognitive problems after deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the bilateral subthalamic nuclei (STN). After a brief cognitive improvement, the patient gradually deteriorated until she developed full-blown dementia. We discuss the case with respect to the cognitive effects of STN DBS and the possible risk factors of dementia after STN DBS surgery.

The involvement of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in a broad spectrum of various non-motor functions - attention, executive functions, verbal learning and memory, verbal abstract reasoning, conflict resolution, and emotions - has been reported. The STN has an anatomically central position within the basal ganglia(BG)-thalamocortical motor, associative and limbic circuits. The STN might interfere with non-motor functions as an indirect modulator rather than a regulator.

We studied whether the cognitive event-related potentials (ERP) in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) are modified by the modulation of the inferior frontal cortex (IFC) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Eighteen patients with Parkinson's disease who had been implanted with a deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode were included in the study. The ERPs were recorded from the DBS electrode before and after the rTMS (1 Hz, 600 pulses) over either the right IFC (10 patients) or the right DLPFC (8 patients).

The objective of our work was to find whether the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is directly involved in cognitive activities, specifically in executive functions. Ten patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease had P3 potentials recorded by externalized deep brain electrodes that were implanted in the STN or in its immediate vicinity. Two contacts of each electrode were positioned inside the STN according to clinical effect, perioperative microrecording, and stimulation.
