The interactions between apolipoprotein E () genotype and diet pattern changes were found significant in several trials, implying that gene may modify the effect of animal protein-rich food on health outcomes. We aim to study the interaction of genotype with the effect of meat, fish and egg intake on mortality. This population-based study enrolled 8,506 older adults (mean age: 81.

Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a leading cause of hospitalizations and mortality when diagnosed at the age of ≥ 65 years. HFpEF represents multifactorial and multisystemic syndrome and has different pathophysiology and phenotypes. Its diagnosis is difficult to be established based on left ventricular ejection fraction and may benefit from individually tailored approaches, underlying age-related changes and frequent comorbidities.

BMC Geriatr

June 2021

Center for Healthy Aging and Development Studies, Raissun Institute for Advanced Studies, National School of Development, Peking University, No. 5 Yiheyuan Road, Beijing, 100871, Haidian District, China.

Background: Sleep duration and vegetable consumption are associated with mortality at old age (termed as sleep-mortality linkage and vegetable-mortality linkage, respectively). Yet, little is known about the interplay of sleep duration and vegetable consumption on mortality.

Methods: A dataset of nationwide longitudinal survey with 13,441 participants aged 65 years or older recruited in 2008 and followed up till 2014 was used.

In the current study, we aimed to determine the association of single nucleotide polymorphism rs189037 in ataxia-telangiectasia mutated () gene with cardiac structure and human longevity. Based on the China Hainan Centenarian Cohort Study performed in 18 cities and counties of Hainan Province, China, the current study enrolled 547 centenarians, 250 young participants aged 20-45 years, and 250 middle-aged and elderly participants aged 46-90 years. The frequency of TT genotype was significantly higher and that of CC genotype was significantly lower in middle-aged and elderly participants than in young ( = 0.

Background: Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 is the single most important genetic risk factor for cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease (AD), while lifestyle factors such as smoking, drinking, diet, and physical activity also have impact on cognition. The goal of the study is to investigate whether the association between lifestyle and cognition varies by APOE genotype among the oldest old.

Methods And Findings: We used the cross-sectional data including 6,160 oldest old (aged 80 years old or older) from the genetic substudy of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) which is a national wide cohort study that began in 1998 with follow-up surveys every 2-3 years.

Prior studies suggested that residential proximity to major roadways was associated with increased risks of cardiovascular diseases in developed countries, for which one explanation is that road proximity could heighten the risks of hypertension. However, the association of residential distance to major roadways with hypertension is still unclear in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with levels of air pollution and socioeconomic development distinctively different from developed countries. We derived data from the eighth wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, a nationwide prospective cohort.

Heart rate variability and inflammatory bowel disease in humans: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Medicine (Baltimore)

November 2020

Department of Family Medicine, Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) maintains homeostasis in the gastrointestinal tract, including immunity, inflammation and motility, through the brain-gut axis. To date, the associations between ANS function and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been controversial and inconclusive in human studies. PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase were searched through February 2020 for articles reporting these association between heart rate variability (HRV), an indirect measure of ANS activity, and IBD.

Although abdominal obesity plays a fundamental role in the onset of immune and inflammatory reactions leading to cardiac abnormalities and premature mortality, the potential association between periumbilical fat and longevity mediated by the antibody-complement system and/or cardiac structure and function remains unclear. To address this issue, we collected biochemical and morphological data from 419 centenarians and 491 non-centenarian oldest-old individuals from the China Hainan Centenarian Cohort Study. Centenarians had lower waist circumference (WC), periumbilical fat thickness (PFT), serum complement C3 level, right atrium end-systolic diameter (RAESD), left atrium end-systolic diameter (LAESD), and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) than non-centenarians (P<0.

In this study, we split 2156 individuals from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) data into two groups, establishing a phenotype of exceptional longevity & normal cognition versus cognitive impairment. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify significant genetic variants and biological pathways that are associated with cognitive impairment and used these results to construct polygenic risk scores. We elucidated the important and robust factors, both genetic and non-genetic, in predicting the phenotype, using several machine learning models.

Extracellular vesicles in cardiovascular diseases.

Cell Death Discov

Centre for the Study of Ageing and Human Development and Geriatrics Division, Medical School of Duke University, Durham, NC 27708 USA.

Due to the continued high incidence and mortality rate worldwide, there is still a need to develop new strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Proper cardiovascular function depends on the coordinated interplay and communication between cardiomyocytes and noncardiomyocytes. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are enclosed in a lipid bilayer and represent a significant mechanism for intracellular communication.

Vitamin D and complement components shared some common pathophysiological pathways in the musculoskeletal system, circulation, and metabolism, which were linked to physical function. It is hypothesized that serum complement components may interact with vitamin D in respect of the physical activities of daily living (PADLs). To investigate if serum complement components 3 (C3), complement components 4 (C4), and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] associate with PADLs, and to examine whether the association between 25(OH)D levels and PADLs varies at different complement component levels among Chinese centenarians.

Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D, Albumin, and Mortality Among Chinese Older Adults: A Population-based Longitudinal Study.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab

August 2020

Center for Healthy Aging and Development Studies, National School of Development and Raissun Institute for Advanced Studies, Peking University, Beijing, China.

Context: The associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations [25(OH)D] and all-cause mortality have been inconsistent in existing literatures. One plausible reason is the interaction of intrinsic vitamin D with other biological conditions such as malnutrition and chronic inflammation.

Objective: To explore the associations between serum levels of 25(OH)D, albumin, and all-cause mortality and further evaluate their interactions in elderly people.

Multiple Measures of Mineral Metabolism Were Associated With Renal Function in Chinese Centenarians: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Front Med (Lausanne)

April 2020

Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development and Geriatrics Division, Medical School of Duke University, Durham, NC, United States.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) constitutes a public health issue that is estimated to affect more than 10% of global population. Over 100 million people have CKD in China. For the first time, this cross-sectional study was designed to determine whether multiple measures of mineral metabolism had a significant association with renal function in Chinese centenarians.
