Background:  The benefits and risks of extending anticoagulant treatment beyond the first 3 to 6 months in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) in clinical practice are not well understood.

Background: Recently, it has been questioned whether vaccination of patients with inflammatory (auto)immune diseases under anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) treatment leads to impaired vaccine-induced immune responses and protection against breakthrough infections. However, the effects of TNF blockade on short- and long-term immune responses after repeated vaccination remain unclear. Vaccination studies have shown that initial short-term IgG antibodies (Abs) carry highly galactosylated and sialylated Fc glycans, whilst long-term IgG Abs have low levels of galactosylation and sialylation and are most likely generated by long-lived plasma cells (PCs) derived primarily from the germinal center (GC) response.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss of paternal expression of imprinted genes on chromosome 15q11-q13. We established a human induced pluripotent stem cell line (hiPSC), ZIPi021-A, from fibroblasts of a 4-year-old female PWS patient with the subtype of maternal uniparental disomy (mUPD). The generated hiPSC line was transgene-free, expressed pluripotency markers and showed the ability to differentiate into all three germ layers in vitro.

Schizophrenia is highly heritable and aggregating in families, but genetics alone does not exclusively explain the pathogenesis. During our search for novel myxobacterial natural products, we discovered the thiamyxins: thiazole- and thiazoline-rich non-ribosomal peptide-polyketide hybrids with potent antiviral activity. We isolated four congeners of this unprecedented natural product family with the non-cyclized thiamyxin D fused to a glycerol unit at the C-terminus. Alongside their structure elucidation, we present a concise biosynthesis model based on biosynthetic gene cluster analysis and isotopically labelled precursor feeding.

Theiler's disease (TD) is a (sub-)acute hepatitis in adult horses and one of the most common causes of acute hepatic failure. Recent findings indicate that equine parvovirus hepatitis (EqPV-H) likely causes TD and that its transmission occurs via iatrogenic and/or natural routes. Following the death of an EqPV-H positive mare with TD, close-contact mares and foals in the same paddock were monitored to evaluate if there was any evidence of EqPV-H.

Immature autoreactive B cells are present in all healthy individuals, but it is unclear which signals are required for their maturation into antibody-producing cells. Inducible depletion of γδ T cells show that direct interaction between γδ T cells and immature B cells in the spleen support an "innate" transition to mature B cells with a broad range of antigen specificities. IL-4 production of γδ T cells and cell-to-cell contact via CD30L support B cell maturation and induce genes of the unfolded protein response and mTORC1 signaling.
