Dysregulation of miR-146a in human milk of mothers having children with autism.

Int J Dev Neurosci

October 2024

Research on Children with Special Needs Department, Medical Research and Clinical Studies Institute, National Research Centre, Giza, Egypt.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a set of neurobehavioral manifestations that impose poor social interaction and stereotyped repetitive patterns. Several mircoRNA (miRNA) dysregulations underpin ASD pathophysiology via impairing the neurogenic niches. For instance, miR-146a and miR-106 differential expressions are linked to deregulation of ASD-related genes and the severity of clinical symptoms, respectively.

Background: Analysis of free DNA molecules shed from tumour cells in plasma of patients referred as circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) with reference to physiological circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is nowadays exploited as liquid biopsy and is considered a new emerging promising biomarker for diagnosis, selection of proper treatment, and prognosis of cancer. DNA integrity index (DII) is assessed by calculating the ratio between the concentration of long cfDNA strands released from tumour cells (ALU247) and the short strands released from normal cells (ALU115). The aim of the current study was to evaluate DII as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker of NSCLC.

Background: Myotonia Congenita (MC) is a rare disease classified into two major forms; Thomsen and Becker disease caused by mutations in the CLCN1 gene, which affects muscle excitability and encodes voltage-gated chloride channels (CLC-1). While, there are no data regarding the clinical and molecular characterization of myotonia in Egyptian patients.

Methods: Herein, we report seven Egyptian MC patients from six unrelated families.

Impact of lifestyle interventions on pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

World J Gastroenterol

May 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Medical Research and Clinical Studies Institute, National Research Center, Giza 12311, Egypt.

This editorial builds on the article titled "Establishment and validation of an adherence prediction system for lifestyle interventions in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease" by Zeng . We carried out a critical examination of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) pathogenesis and how lifestyle interventions could facilitate disease resolution, particularly highlighting that non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a severe form of NAFLD. Our discussion details that weight loss is a pivotal factor in disease outcomes: A 3%-5% reduction is enough for resolution in 50% of non-obese individuals, while a 7%-10% reduction achieves similar benefits in obese individuals, as demonstrated by magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Male infertility is identified by the inability of a man to successfully impregnate his fertile female partner, even following a year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. About half of all infertility cases are attributed to what is known as "male factor" infertility. The escalating prevalence of male infertility in the contemporary era across the globe can be largely attributed to environmental pollution, which is the common etiological factor due to the ubiquitous presence of the environmental contaminants.
