Background: Hypertrophic scars and keloids are fibroproliferative skin disorders characterised by progressive deposition of collagen. Our study is designed to investigate the expression and concentration of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) in different types of scars and keloids.

Methods: Total RNA from 19 proliferative hypertrophic scar samples of patients with extended burns (total body surface area (TBSA): 21+/-12%), 18 mature hypertrophic scar samples from patients after elective surgery, 14 keloid samples and 18 normotrophic scar samples was, respectively, extracted, and then mRNA was isolated.

Complete degloving injury of three digits not amenable to revascularization may leave poor cosmetic and functional results. We used a compound thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flap in a 34-year-old, right-handed, male worker with traumatic degloving injury. The flap consisted of a thin nonbulky skin component isolated on two perforators in combination with serratus fascia, both pedicled on the thoracodorsal vessels.

In this study, we used a quantitative reverse-transcription PCR methodology to profile the expression of TIMP1, TIMP2, MMP2, and MMP9 in nodule and cord tissue from patients with Dupuytren's disease and compared this with normal palmar fascia taken at carpal tunnel release.

Objectives: In this prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled study we observed the influence of treatment with candesartan 8mg on restenosis rates after stent implantation into the femoral artery 6 months after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). We hypothesised that angiotensin II type 1 (AT1)-receptor blockade with candesartan would reduce restenosis rates by reducing angiotensin II-mediated intima hyperproliferation within the stented vessel segment in patients with peripheral occlusive disease.

Patients And Methods: Eighty-seven patients with peripheral occlusive arterial disease stage IIb who had been successfully treated with PTA and stent implantation were randomised to receive orally either candesartan 8mg (n = 44) or placebo (n = 43).

Experimental studies point to an interplay between hypercholesterolemia and hypertension, acting through the renin angiotensin system. In a crossover study design with 8 healthy subjects, the authors tested the hypothesis that statin treatment exerts renin angiotensin system-modulating effects in veins by down-regulation of AT1-receptors, resulting in reduced Angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced venoconstriction and by increasing the pleiotropic Ang II-metabolite Ang-(1-7). In addition, deficits in working memory, planning ability and central executive control, as well as high cognitive impulsivity, were also reported in some studies. So far, the most convincing evidence for neurotoxicity-related functional deficits in humans derives from neurocognitive studies demonstrating dose-related long-term learning and memory problems in ecstasy users. In our study we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a working memory task to investigate cerebral activation in eleven heavy, but currently abstinent MDMA users and two equally sized groups of moderate users and non-users.

Dysfunction of central serotonergic activity has been assumed in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) characterized by a prominent impulsive behavioral style. Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate neuroendocrine function in ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine = MDMA) users and controls.

Methods: Prolactin response to d-fenfluramine was assessed in abstinent ecstasy users with concomitant use of cannabis only (n = 24, male/female 13/11) and in two control groups: healthy nonusers (n = 13, female) and exclusive cannabis users (n = 7, male).

Results: Prolactin response to d-fenfluramine was slightly blunted in female ecstasy users.

This study was performed to analyze the effect of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) on 14-day mortality, outcome at 6 months, and the occurrence of chronic hydrocephalus in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Clinical grade of subarachnoid hemorrhage and the distribution of extravasated blood were evaluated in 219 patients with ruptured aneurysms.
