A comparative evaluation of cataract classifications based on shear-wave elastography and B-mode ultrasound findings.

In this study, a comparison is made of the findings of B-mode ultrasound and ultrasound elastography with the Lens Opacities Classification (LOCS) grade in patients with senile cataracts. A total of 74 patients with cataracts and 32 age-matched healthy volunteers as the control group were evaluated in the departments of ophthalmology and radiology between 2016 and 2017. In the patient group, cataracts were graded according to LOCS, and B-mode sonographic appearance and elasticity measurements were recorded, after which the cataract grade and sonoelastography/B-mode ultrasound findings were compared using statistical methods.

Is the prognostic nutritional index a prognostic and predictive factor in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with first-line chemotherapy?

Purpose: We aimed to assess the prognostic and predictive significance of pretreatment Onodera's prognostic nutritional index (OPNI) in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer patients (NSCLC) treated with first-line chemotherapy.

Materials And Methods: Patients with metastatic NSCLC who attended five different medical oncology clinics between December 2008 and January 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. The optimal cut-off point for OPNI was performed by a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

Izmir Mental Health Cohort for Gene-Environment Interaction in Psychosis (TürkSch): Assessment of the Extended and Transdiagnostic Psychosis Phenotype and Analysis of Attrition in a 6-Year Follow-Up of a Community-Based Sample.

TürkSch is a prospective, longitudinal study in a representative community sample (İzmir, Turkey), consisting of several data collection stages, to screen and follow-up mental health outcomes, with a special focus on the extended and transdiagnostic psychosis phenotype. The aim of the present paper is to describe the research methodology, data collection results, and associations with noncontact and refusal in the longitudinal arm. Households were contacted in a multistage clustered probability sampling frame, covering 11 districts and 302 neighborhoods at baseline (n = 4,011) and at 6-year follow-up (n = 2,185).

HEV seroprevalence in blood donors in Turkey by two commercial total anti-HEV Ab ELISA kits.

Previous hepatitis E virus (HEV) seroprevalence studies in Turkey have shown high variabilities, leading to conflicting results. We aimed to re-evaluate HEV seroprevalence among blood donors in Turkey using the Wantai (Beijing, China) and the Dia.Pro (Milan, Italy) total anti-HEV antibody (Ab) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits and compare their performances and to investigate the presence of HEV RNA in blood donors.

Karyotype analysis in children with idiopathic intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) is a heterogeneous condition, affecting 1-3% of general population. In this study, karyotype analysis was performed in 33 children with idiopathic ID in a hospital with limited laboratory facilities to determine the value of karyotype analysis as a first step test in children with idiopathic ID. Thirty-three patients with idiopathic ID were included in the study.

The Relation between Hemogram Parameters and Survival in Extensive-Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Purpose: To determine whether hemogram parameters have prognostic effects on survival in patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC).

Methods: This retrospective analysis included 113ED-SCLC patients, who were followed in an oncology clinic. The data regarding the baseline patient demographic characteristics, complete blood count (white blood cell, red blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean platelet volume, platelet, total neutrophil, total lymphocyte, total monocyte, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio [NLR], platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio [PLR], and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio [MLR]), and survival were analyzed.

Background: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), defined as glucose intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy, represents one of the most common maternal-fetal complications during pregnancy and it is associated with poor perinatal outcomes. Objective: In this study, women with habitual abortus (HA) and healthy control groups were determined for zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), potassium (K), retinol, cholecalciferol, α-tocopherol, phylloquinone, total antioxidant (TAS) and total oxidation status (TOS) levels, also, and the relationships of these variables with HA were evaluated.

High genetic diversity and differentiation of the Babesia ovis population in Turkey.

Periprostatic nerve block alone versus combined with perineal pudendal nerve block or intrarectal local anesthesia during transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy: A prospective randomized controlled trial.

Objectives: To compare the efficacy, safety and cost of combinations of perineal pudendal nerve block + periprostatic nerve block and intrarectal local anesthesia + periprostatic nerve block with the standard technique (periprostatic nerve block).

Prognostic impact of blood transfusion in patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer receiving chemotherapy.

Purpose: To investigate the prognostic effects of Allogeneic Blood Transfusion (ABT) in patients with metastatic Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) receiving Chemotherapy (CT) in the first-line treatment, comparing untransfused patients to those receiving blood transfusion during treatment period or before treatment period.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 433 patients with metastatic NSCLC receiving CT in the first-line treatment. Patients were categorized into 3 groups according to the transfusion strategy as follows; group-U(Untransfused patients, n = 303), group-B(patients receiving transfusion Before treatment period, n = 43), and group-D(patients receiving transfusion During treatment period, n = 87).

Development of a reliable microRNA based electrochemical genosensor for monitoring of miR-146a, as key regulatory agent of neurodegenerative disease.

A MicroRNA (miR) based electrochemical method for quantification of miR-146a, a known biomarker for neurodegenerative disease, was developed. In this bioassay, the capture microRNA (C-miR) was self-assembled on the gold surface and used for quantification of target microRNA (T-miR) of miR-146a. For this purpose, an optimized concentration of C-miR was immobilized on the surface of gold electrode and used for capture of target analyte (T-miR).

Influence of some β-lactam drugs on selected antioxidant enzyme and lipid peroxidation levels in different rat tissues.

Antioxidant enzymes play an important role in body defense and free radical removal. Cephalosporins are β-lactam antibiotics. In this work, the effects of cefazolin, cefuroxime and cefoperazone which are cephalosporins on some selected antioxidant enzyme and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) as lipid peroxidation product were investigated in kidney, liver, and brain tissues of albino female rats.

The Turkish experience with therapeutic plasma exchange: A national survey.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is used to treat more than 60 diseases worldwide and has drawn growing interest. Little is known about the current situation of TPE activity in Turkey, so we developed a survey to obtain information about this timely topic. We collected data on TPE from 28 apheresis units throughout Turkey.

Effects of morning and nocturnal soccer matches on levels of some trace elements in young trained males.

The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate effect of morning and nocturnal soccer matches induced metabolic stress on plasma levels of iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). Twenty male footballers performed two soccer matches in morning and at night on different days. Blood samples were taken before and after match.

Evaluation of the anticancer potential of a sulphonamide carbonic anhydrase IX inhibitor on cervical cancer cells.

Cervical cancer is a common type of cancer. Carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX) is an attractive target for tumour therapy, being overexpressed in many cancers. We investigated the anticancer properties of the aromatic sulphonamide S-1 as a CA IX inhibitor on cervical cancer cells (HeLa) positive for CA IX expression and normal prostate epithelial cell line (PNT1-A) negative for CA IX.
