The levels of nitrite, nitrate and lipid peroxidation in diabetic mouse brain: the effect of melatonin and pentoxifylline.

Objective: This study investigated the relationship between diabetes (DM) and nitrite, nitrate and MDA levels and effect of melatonin and pentoxifylline.

Methods: Sixty mice were randomly divided into four groups. Control: no action; Diabetes group (DM): after fasting-blood-glucose (FBG) was measured, 150 mg/kg alloxane was applied intraperitoneally three-times every other day; Diabetes + Melatonin (DM + MLT) and Diabetes + Pentoxifylline groups (DM + PTX): following the same procedures with DM, 10 mg/kg melatonin and 50 mg/kg pentoxifylline were administered subcutaneously six days, respectively.

A 5 years follow-up for ischemic cardiac outcomes in patients with carotid artery calcification on panoramic radiographs confirmed by doppler ultrasonography in Turkish population.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of digital panoramic radiograph (DPR) for detection of carotid artery calcification (CAC) confirmed by Doppler Ultrasonography (DUSG) and to clarify the relationship between between CAC identified by DPR and cardiovascular events through a 5 year follow-up period.

Methods: Of 3600 consecutive patients examined, 158 patients presented with CAC as detected by DPR. The final study group was composed of 96 patients who had CAC confirmed by DUSG or CT angiogram.

[In-vitro Activity of Ceftolozane-Tazobactam in Combination with Various Antibiotics Against Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Isolated from Intensive Care Patients].

Acinetobacter species lead to nosocomial infections in immunocompromised patients hospitalized in intensive care units or services. Acinetobacter baumannii is a bacterium that is difficult to treat because it is intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics and can develop resistance afterwards. This situation limits the use of existing antibiotics and directs the clinician to new agents, different treatment options and the use of various antibiotic combinations.

The impact of tumor regression grade on long-term survival in locally advanced rectal cancer treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic effect of tumor regression grade (TRG) on long-term survival in locally advanced rectal cancer treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy.

Methods: Medical records of 182 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer, who were treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery between 2002 and 2016, were retrospectively reviewed. TRG was classified into five categories based on the pathological response as follows - TRG1: no viable cancer cell, TRG2: single cancer cell or small groups of cancer cells, TRG3: residual tumor outgrown by fibrosis, TRG4: residual tumor outgrowing fibrosis, TRG5: diffuse residual tumor without regression.

Is there a correlation between obstructive sleep-apnea syndrome severity and prolidase activity as an oxidative stress marker?

Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a highly prevalent breathing disorder in sleep. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between OSAS and prolidase activity, the oxidative stress index (OSI), total antioxidative capacity (TAC), total oxidative capacity (TOC) and the carotid intima media thickness (CIMT).

Method: : After night polysomnography, 74 people were diagnosed with OSAS and simple snoring.

Introduction: The etiology/pathophysiology of preeclampsia remains an enigma. Maternal inflammation (humoral and cellular) is a key factor in the etiology of late-onset preeclampsia (L-PrE). Presepsin is split out from the phagocytes membranes after phagocytosis.

Assessment of HLA-A, HLA-DR, and HLA-DQ alleles in patients with pemphigus vulgaris from eastern of Turkey.

Background: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a chronic progressive autoimmune bullous disease caused by the interaction of pathogenic factors, genetic, and environmental factors. HLA alleles, which are considered as protective factors against disease or predisposing factors, may be different in various populations and ethnic groups.

Aims: The purpose of this study is to examine the HLA-A, HLA-DR, and HLA-DQ alleles in patients that are diagnosed with PV in and around eastern of Turkey and to determine the alleles that create predisposition to disease or protect against the disease.

Fertility Preservation in Benign Gynecological Diseases: Current Approaches and Future Perspectives.

Although fertility preservation is a growing topic in the management of oncological diseases, different benign gynecological pathologies are able to compromise the ovarian reserve due to mechanisms related to the pathology itself or secondary to the performed treatments. Endometriosis, benign ovarian tumors, adnexal torsion, familiarity and genetic syndromes are all benign conditions that can compromise the ovarian reserve. Endometriosis and particularly endometriomas provide a direct damage to ovarian reserve, with different mechanisms, and an indirect damage related to surgery.

An Oral Myiasis Case Caused by Diptera (Calliphoridae) Larvae in Turkey.

The objective of the present study is to present a patient with oral myiasis caused by Calliphoridae larvae. The patient was a 63-year-old male who was transferred from Van Closed Prison to Yüzüncü Yıl University, Faculty of Medicine Research and Application Hospital. Five alive larvae localized in different points of gingival region were observed during routine oral cleaning.

Electrochemiluminescence methods using CdS quantum dots in aptamer-based thrombin biosensors: a comparative study.

The detection of thrombin by using CdS nanocrystals (CdS NCs), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and luminol is investigated in this work. Thrombin is detected by three methods. One is called the quenching method.

Clinical and genetic spectrum of an orphan disease MPAN: a series with new variants and a novel phenotype.

Introduction: Pathogenic variations in C19orf12 are responsible for two allelic diseases: mitochondrial membrane protein-associated neurodegeneration (MPAN); and spastic paraplegia type 43 (SPG43). MPAN is an orphan disease, which presents with spasticity, dystonia, peripheral nerve involvement, and dementia. The pattern of iron accumulation on brain MRI may be a clue for the diagnosis of MPAN.

Quality of life in women with endometriosis: a narrative overview.

Endometriosis is a very complex condition and has a significant impact on the quality of life, psychological wellbeing and interpersonal relationships of affected women. Endometriosis symptoms progressively impair the woman's ability to carry out some daily activities and result in a perception of worsening health status and overall well-being. The impact of these symptoms has been only partially investigated, and further studies and clinical insights are needed to fully understand the extent of this condition.

Synthesis of magnetic halloysite nanotube-based molecularly imprinted polymers for sensitive spectrophotometric detection of metoclopramide in urine samples.

A novel molecularly imprinted polymer was synthesized on magnetic halloysite nanotube via surface initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization in the presence of 2-aminoethylmethacrylamide, 2-Cyano-2-propyl benzodithioate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and azobis(isobutyronitrile) for sensitive and selective spectrophotometric determination of metoclopramide in urine samples. The synthesized imprinted polymer was characterized by several surface characterization techniques and the results indicated there was a thin polymer network on the magnetic halloysite nanotube. The rebinding properties of the molecularly imprinted magnetic halloysite nanotube were also investigated in detail and the maximum adsorption capacity and imprinting factor were found to be 37.

An investigation of the relation between catalase gene polymorphism and catalase enzyme activity in leukemia patients.

Introduction: Catalase (CAT), an antioxidant enzyme, catalyzes conversion of hydrogen peroxide to water and molecular oxygen, protecting cells against oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between polymorphism in the promoter region of the gene and leukemia risk and to determine the relationship between genotypes and CAT enzyme activities.

Material And Methods: Genotypes of 102 cases and 112 healthy controls' genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism methods.

The interaction of gamma radiation with drugs used in cholinergic medications.

Pharmacological medications can reduce the radiation damage in the organism when applied in the stage before or after exposure to radiation. Cholinergic drugs are a category of pharmaceutical agents acting on the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, the primary neurotransmitter in the parasympathetic nervous system. In this investigation, some gamma radiation interaction parameters namely mass attenuation coeffıcients (), effective atomic number () and electron densities () of 12 cholinergic system drugs have been calculated in the energy range 1 KeV-100 GeV.

Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma in Turkey: Association with Hepatitis B Instead of Hepatitis C Virus as an Etiologic and Possible Prognostic Factor - A Multicenter Cohort Study.

Objective: Chronic antigenic stimulation is frequently blamed in the pathogenesis of extranodal marginal zone lymphomas including splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL). Chronic hepatitis C is frequently observed in SMZL patients in some geographical regions. However, these reports are largely from North America and Europe, and data from other countries are insufficient.

Pemphigus in the eastern region of Turkey.

Introduction: Pemphigus refers to a group of rare autoimmune vesiculobullous diseases with high morbidity and mortality, mainly affecting the skin and the mucosae.

Aim: To evaluate the incidence of pemphigus in the Eastern region of Turkey by analysing the clinical characteristics of the patients including the drugs used in the treatment and their side-effect profiles and dosing schedules, duration of treatment, length of hospital stay, and the characteristics of the lesions.

Material And Methods: The retrospective study included 130 pemphigus patients who were admitted to the in- and out-patient dermatology clinics at the University Medical School between January 2005 and October 2017.

Cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of an endemic plant of Turkey on breast cancer cell lines.

Context: The natural products derived from plants are the important sources that can be used for breast cancer treatment. Salvia species and their derived products were recommended as potential antitumor substances.

Aim: The potential cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of Salvia kronenburgii have been investigated on breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231.

Herbal medicines are efficient to reduce side effects in the fight against glioblastoma, which plays a critical role within brain cancer species. The recent studies designated for testing the effects of lichens that have shown numerous anticancer activities on glioblastoma so far. In the present study, different concentrations of water extract obtained from Usnea longissima Ach.

Raman spectroscopy: A novel experimental approach to evaluating cisplatin induced tissue damage.

The aim of this work is to clarify the effect of curcumin and beta-carotene on cisplatin-induced tissue damage and to demonstrate the potential of Raman spectroscopy to detect tissue changes consistent with liver and kidney histopathology as a potential diagnostic adjunct. İn the study, 56 Wistar albino female rats were used and randomly divided into 7 groups (n:8). Sham group received only sesame oil; Cisplatin group, received a single dose injection of cisplatin; Beta-carotene group, treated with beta-carotene orally; Cisplatin + Beta-carotene group, pretreated with beta-carotene 30 min prior to the cisplatin injection, then received cisplatin; Curcumin group, orally treated with curcumin; Cisplatin + Curcumin group, pretreated with curcumin 30min prior to the cisplatin injection, then received cisplatin.

Phytotherapy in endometriosis: an up-to-date review.

Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease which symptoms can provide a severe impact on patient's quality of life with subsequent impact on psychological well-being. Different therapeutic strategies are available to treat this disease, such as surgery, hormonal therapies, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Nevertheless, the efficacy of conventional medical treatments is limited or intermittent in most of the patients due to the associated side effects.

Aims: The present study was conducted to determine the presence of in cattle in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia of Turkey.

Methods: Blood samples were collected from 450 cattle in the provinces of Mus, Van, Siirt, and Diyarbakir.

A Rare Case of Secondary Hydatid Cyst: Uterus and Colon Locations in the Same Patient.

The aim of the present study was to present a case with secondary hydatid cysts in both uterus and colon. The patient was a 71-year-old female living in Hakkari, Turkey. She was admitted to the Van Yuzuncu Yil University Faculty of Medicine Medical Center with complaints of chronic abdominal and pelvic pain, and swelling in the abdomen.

Comparative Genotyping of Infecting Livestock in Turkey and Iran.

So far 10 genotypes of this parasite have been identified, using molecular methods. The current study aimed to evaluate and compare the genotypic diversity of metacestodes from livestock of Turkey and Iran.

A comparative evaluation of cataract classifications based on shear-wave elastography and B-mode ultrasound findings.

In this study, a comparison is made of the findings of B-mode ultrasound and ultrasound elastography with the Lens Opacities Classification (LOCS) grade in patients with senile cataracts. A total of 74 patients with cataracts and 32 age-matched healthy volunteers as the control group were evaluated in the departments of ophthalmology and radiology between 2016 and 2017. In the patient group, cataracts were graded according to LOCS, and B-mode sonographic appearance and elasticity measurements were recorded, after which the cataract grade and sonoelastography/B-mode ultrasound findings were compared using statistical methods.
