University Clinic for Urology, Urooncology, Robot-Assisted and Focal Therapy, University Hospital Magdeburg A.ö.R., Medical Faculty of the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Leipziger Str. 44, 39120 Magdeburg, Germany.

Blunt abdominopelvic trauma frequently results in injuries to the urinary organs, especially in polytrauma. The urotrauma is rarely an acute life-threatening event; however, it may lead to severe complications. This review addresses the under-representation of urological trauma management in interdisciplinary medical training and its impact on patient outcomes.

Dose optimization in computed tomography (CT) is crucial, especially in CT fluoroscopy (fluoro-CT) used for real-time navigation, affecting both patient and operator safety. This study evaluated the impact of spectral X-ray filtering using a tin filter (Sn filter), and a method called partial-angle computed tomography (PACT), which involves segmentally switching off the X-ray tube current at the ambient dose rate H˙*(10) at the interventional radiologist's (IR) position. Measurements were taken at two body regions (upper body: head/neck; lower body: lower legs/feet) using a 120 kV X-ray tube voltage, 3 × 5.

Sublethal necroptosis signaling promotes inflammation and liver cancer.

Immunity

Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases, University Hospital Dusseldorf, Medical Faculty at Heinrich Heine University Dusseldorf, Dusseldorf, Germany. Electronic address:

It is currently not well known how necroptosis and necroptosis responses manifest in vivo. Here, we uncovered a molecular switch facilitating reprogramming between two alternative modes of necroptosis signaling in hepatocytes, fundamentally affecting immune responses and hepatocarcinogenesis. Concomitant necrosome and NF-κB activation in hepatocytes, which physiologically express low concentrations of receptor-interacting kinase 3 (RIPK3), did not lead to immediate cell death but forced them into a prolonged "sublethal" state with leaky membranes, functioning as secretory cells that released specific chemokines including CCL20 and MCP-1.

Eur J Med Res

June 2022

Department of Radiation Oncology, University Hospital, Medical Faculty, Heinrich Heine University, Moorenstr. 5, 40225, Düsseldorf, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 has effectively reduced the severity of infections globally despite viral mutations, shifting the focus towards potential side effects, particularly myocarditis linked to mRNA vaccines.
  • A study documented eight patients aged 13 to 56 who experienced cardiac symptoms like dyspnea and chest pain soon after vaccination with BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273.
  • Diagnosis was supported through MRI and electrocardiography, but the exact causes of myocarditis post-vaccination remain unclear.

Background And Aims: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is a collective term for a heterogenous group of rare, inherited cholestasis syndromes. The number of genes underlying the clinical PFIC phenotype is still increasing. While progressive liver disease and its sequelae such as portal hypertension, pruritus and hepatocellular carcinoma determine transplant-free survival, extrahepatic manifestations may cause relevant morbidity.

Objectives: We sought association of genetic variants in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and vitamin D system with acute pancreatitis (AP) development and severity.

Background: The endocrine RAS is involved in circulatory homeostasis through the pressor action of angiotensin II at its AT1 receptor. However, local RAS regulate growth and inflammation in diverse cells and tissues, and their activity may be suppressed by vitamin D.

It is puzzling that hydrogen-rich fatty acids are used only poorly as fuel in the brain. The long-standing belief that a slow passage of fatty acids across the blood-brain barrier might be the reason. However, this has been corrected by experimental results.
