Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the clinicopathological characteristics and mortality predictors in patients with peritoneal tuberculosis (TBP) using data from 38 medical centers across 13 countries.
  • A total of 208 TBP patients were analyzed, with common comorbid conditions including HIV, diabetes, and chronic renal failure; 34 (16.3%) of these patients died from TBP.
  • Key mortality risk factors identified include HIV positivity, cirrhosis, advanced age, and specific symptoms, leading to the development of a pioneering mortality predicting model to identify high-risk patients.

Nitrates are one of the most prescribed medications in the treatment of angina pectoris today. Headache is the most common side effect of nitrates, and there is limited prospective data on the determinants of this effect. Our aim in this study is to open a foresight window for clinicians in clinical practice by explaining the possible relationship between nitrate-induced headache and whole-blood viscosity (WBV).

Introduction: The Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) is a clinical judgement-based frailty tool developed from the Canadian Study of Health and Aging. Many studies on the measurement of frailty and its effect on clinical outcomes have been conducted on patients hospitalized, especially in intensive care units. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between polypharmacy and frailty on outpatient older adult patients in primary care.

The trefoil factor family (TFF) is a relatively new family of peptides. In some studies, an association between trefoil factors and inflammatory diseases of the nasal and paranasal sinuses has been suggested. However, it is still not clear whether there is a relationship between trefoil peptides and inflammation of the respiratory tract.

A novel donepezil-caffeic acid (DP-CA) hybrid molecule was designed, synthesis, and investigated by molecular modeling. Its biological activity and protective effect were investigated by the IR spectroscopy, H and C NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. DP-CA was highly active against acetylcholine esterase and inhibited it at the micromolar concentrations.

A Novel Cuffless Blood Pressure Prediction: Uncovering New Features and New Hybrid ML Models.

Diagnostics (Basel)

March 2023

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, 14280 Bolu, Turkey.

This paper investigates new feature extraction and regression methods for predicting cuffless blood pressure from PPG signals. Cuffless blood pressure is a technology that measures blood pressure without needing a cuff. This technology can be used in various medical applications, including home health monitoring, clinical uses, and portable devices.

Effects of AGEs, sRAGE and HMGB1 on Clinical Outcomes in Multiple Myeloma.

Indian J Hematol Blood Transfus

April 2023

Department of Hematology, Medical Faculty, Kocaeli University, 11.km, 41380 Umuttepe, Kocaeli, Turkey.

Purpose: The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) upregulated during the onset and progression of cancer and bone-related pathologies. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of serum advanced glycation end products (AGEs), soluble RAGE (sRAGE) and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), in multiple myeloma (MM).

Methods: AGEs, sRAGE and HMGB1 concentrations of 54 newly diagnosed MM patients and 30 healthy volunteers were measured by ELISA.

The presented study comprises the one-pot synthesis and the characterization of quercetin- and caffeic acid-functionalized chitosan-capped colloidal silver nanoparticles (Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag NPs), and their antibacterial and anticancer activities. The formation of Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag NPs has been confirmed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption band has been found at 417 and 424 nm for Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag NPs, respectively.

  • The study evaluated abdominal CT findings in COVID-19 patients and their relationship with demographic, clinical, and lab data.
  • Ischemic findings were present in 20.3% and non-ischemic in 27.7% of the 1,181 reviewed cases, with bowel wall thickening being the most common ischemic finding.
  • Patients with CT findings had longer hospital stays and higher mortality rates, indicating that abdominal symptoms in COVID-19 are significant and often linked to adverse outcomes.

Excitotoxicity and neuroinflammation are key contributors to perinatal brain injuries. Capsaicin, an active ingredient of chili peppers, is a potent exogenous agonist for transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 receptors. Although the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of capsaicin are well-documented, its effects on excitotoxic-induced neonatal brain injury and neuroinflammation have not previously been investigated.

Background: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is a condition that occurs after mechanical obstruction of the pulmonary arteries by thrombus. Since the frequency and demographics of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension differ between countries, it is thought that genetic factors may play a role in its development. The aim of this study is to reveal the status of VKORC1, CYP2C9*3, CYP2C9*7, and fibrinogen-Aα THR312ALA gene polymorphisms in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension patients in Turkey.

Background: Complete atrioventricular block is most commonly caused by age-related degeneration and fibrosis in the cardiac conduction system and is called primary idiopathic complete atrioventricular (iCAVB). Although many factors affect this situation, which increases with age in the cardiac conduction system, the relationship between whole blood viscosity (WBV) and iCAVB has not been clarified until now. In this study, we aim to reveal the relationship between iCAVB and WBV.

The development of animal models to study cell death in the brain is a delicate task. One of the models, that was discovered in the late eighties, is the induction of neurodegeneration through glucocorticoid withdrawal by adrenalectomy in albino rats. Such a model is one of the few noninvasive models for studying neurodegeneration.
