Positron emission tomography/computerized tomography imaging of multiple focus of neurolymphomatosis.

Neurolymphomatosis is defined as infiltration of the peripheral nervous system by malignant lymphocytes in the presence of lymphoma. In this case, we described multiple neurol involvement and findings of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computerized tomography in a 35-year-old female diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma.

Usefulness of hounsfield unit and density in the assessment and treatment of urinary stones.

Computed tomography (CT) is widely used to examine stones in the urinary system. In addition to the size and location of the stone and the overall health of the kidney, CT can also assess the density of the stone in Hounsfield units (HU). The HU, or Hounsfield density, measured by CT, is related to the density of the tissue or stone.

Delusional misidentification syndromes may be superimposed on neurological or psychiatric disorders and include delusional beliefs that the people, objects, or places around the patient change or are made to change with one another. In this paper, an adolescent patient displaying Capgras syndrome, metamorphosis, reverse-intermetamorphosis, misidentification of reflection, and reduplicative paramnesia was presented. The findings that our patient struggled with visuospatial tests applied in the acute phase as well as the observation that she refused to meet her family face-to-face while accepting to speak on the phone may support the role of right hemisphere and visuospatial functions in the development of those syndromes.

Pentraxin 3 as a novel biomarker of inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex chronic inflammatory disease of the lungs in which inflammatory markers are involved with significant extrapulmonary effects that may contribute to its severity and complications. Moreover, some of the inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with COPD. Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is the member of long pentraxins.

The phenotypic and molecular genetic spectrum of Alström syndrome in 44 Turkish kindreds and a literature review of Alström syndrome in Turkey.

Alström syndrome (ALMS) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by multiple organ involvement, including neurosensory vision and hearing loss, childhood obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiomyopathy, hypogonadism, and pulmonary, hepatic, renal failure and systemic fibrosis. Alström Syndrome is caused by mutations in ALMS1, and ALMS1 protein is thought to have a role in microtubule organization, intraflagellar transport, endosome recycling and cell cycle regulation. Here, we report extensive phenotypic and genetic analysis of a large cohort of Turkish patients with ALMS.

Understanding characteristics and behavior of cancer is the key issue in providing preventive steps and developing proper strategies in the concept of early diagnosis and treatment.

Motivation for treatment in patients with substance use disorder: personal volunteering versus legal/familial enforcement.

Background: Motivation for treatment on the part of patients with addictive disorders is known to affect their prognosis, and lack thereof is reported to be among the most common reasons for failed treatment adherence and relapse after treatment. This study evaluated the relationship between volunteering, personality, demographic factors, and motivation for treatment.

Methods: The study was conducted at a substance dependence center in the eastern part of Turkey.

Background: Surgeons have aimed to achieve strong repair so as to begin early active rehabilitation programs for flexor tendon injury. Multi-strand suture techniques were developed to gain improved gap resistance and ultimate force compared with the respective two-strand techniques. In vivo studies indicate that multiple strands may cause ischemia during the intrinsic healing process by decreasing the total cross-sectional area of the injured site, unless the total cross-sectional area of the sutures is not decreased.

Non-invasive fibrosis tests are correlated with necroinflammatory actvity of liver in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Background: The gold standarda method used for assessing necroinflammatory activity and fibrosis in the liver is a liver biopsy which has many disadvantages. Therefore, many investigators have been trying to develop non-invasive tests for predicting liver fibrosis score (LFS) of these patients. The aim of this study is to describe the relationship between certain non-invasive fibrosis markers with LFS and histological activity index (HAI) detected histopathologically by liver biopsy in chronic hepatitis B patients.

Treatment decision plans matter in elderly patients with gastrointestinal cancer: suboptimal or optimal?

Purpose: Aging is an important risk factor for cancer. Molecular changes and defective immunity associated with aging result in increased susceptibility to many carcinogens of the gastrointestinal system (GIS). Comorbidities and changes in drug metabolism in elderly patients make the treatment of GIS cancers difficult.

Serum omentin-1 levels in diabetic and nondiabetic patients with chronic kidney disease.

Background: Omentin-1, a novel adipokine identified in visceral adipose tissue, is negatively correlated with different conditions such as diabetes, obesity and inflammation. However, changes in serum Omentin levels associated with the degree of the renal dysfunction and metabolic risk factors in CKD patients has not yet been revealed. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the level of Omentin-1 and related para-meters in diabetic and non-diabetic CKD patients.

Cesarean scar endometrioma: Case series.

Aim: To evaluate endometrioma located at cesarean scatrix.

Methods: Medical data of 6 patients who presented to our institution with abdominal wall endometrioma were evaluated retrospectively and reviewed literature in this case series. The diagnostic approaches and treatment is discussed.

Neutrophil/lymphocyte and C-reactive protein/mean platelet volume ratios in differentiating between viral and bacterial pneumonias and diagnosing early complications in children.

Objective: To test the usability of neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) and C-reactive protein/mean platelet volume (CRP/MPV) ratios for the differential diagnosis of bacterial versus viral pneumonia, and the early diagnosis of complications related to pneumonia.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 31 patients diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia and 21 patients diagnosed with viral pneumonia from January 2011 to December 2012 in the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Abant Izzet Baysal University, Bolu, Turkey. We investigated the clinical characteristics, radiological, and laboratory findings of patients from their medical records.

The evaluation of red cell distribution width in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Background. Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been used as a marker of iron deficiency; however, it is accepted as a marker of cardiovascular survival. We aimed to study RDW levels in hemodialysis (HD) patients and the association between RDW and inflammatory, nutritional, and volume markers.

Methods: Thirty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 250-300 g, were used. Corneal NV was induced by NaOH in the left eyes of each rat.

Pityriasis rosea-like drug eruption due to bupropion: a case report.

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common, acute, and self-limited inflammatory skin disease. Background: It is not possible to diagnose acute kidney injury (AKI) in early stages with traditional biomarkers. Kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) is a novel biomarker promising the diagnosis of AKI in early stages. We studied whether urinary and serum KIM-1 (KIM-1 U and KIM-1 S ) concentrations were useful in predicting cisplatin-induced AKI in early stages.

Dexamethasone added to levobupivacaine in ultrasound-guided tranversus abdominis plain block increased the duration of postoperative analgesia after caesarean section: a randomized, double blind, controlled trial.

Objectives: When added to local anaesthetics, dexamethasone can prolong the duration of peripheral blocks. Dexamethasone has a long and efficient glucocorticoid structure and presents anti-inflammatory properties.
