Influenza A (H1N1) caused its first pandemic in 2009 in USA and Mexico. Since then, clinicians have exercised great care in order to make an early diagnosis of viral pneumonias. This is due in part to pandemic influenza A infection having greater impact on populations <65 years old than other viral strains, including seasonal influenza.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is a mental disorder characterized by uncontrolled and impulsive hair pulling leading to hair loss, distress, and disordered functioning. Treatment choices include behavioral therapy (especially habit reversal training) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. However, randomized controlled trials conducted with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have led to controversial results of effectiveness for TTM.

Turkish adaptation of the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Symptom Score and its validity and reliability.

Int Urogynecol J

August 2017

Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey.

Introduction And Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to adapt the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Symptom Score (POP-SS) into Turkish and evaluate its reliability and validity.

Methods: The POP-SS was adapted into Turkish by following the steps of the intercultural adaptation process. One hundred and three women with symptomatic or asymptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (POP) completed the Turkish POP-SS and other valid and reliable Turkish tools for POP: Pelvic Organ Prolapse Distress Inventory 6 (POPDI-6), Colorectal-Anal Distress Inventory 8 (CRADI-8), Urinary Distress Inventory 6 (UDI-6), Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory 20 (PFDI-20), and Pelvic Organ Prolapse Impact Questionnaire 7 (POPIQ-7).

Article Synopsis
  • Factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation is caused by a specific genetic change (G1691A), affecting blood clotting and leading to increased risk of complications.
  • A patient with this mutation developed complete paraplegia after surgery for a spinal hematoma while on anticoagulant therapy.
  • This case is significant as it is the first documented instance of paraplegia resulting from intramedullary hematoma linked to anticoagulant use in a patient with Factor V mutation.

Serotonergic mechanisms of trigeminal meningeal nociception: Implications for migraine pain.

Neuropharmacology

April 2017

A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, University of Eastern Finland, 70211, Kuopio, Finland; Laboratory of Neurobiology, Kazan Federal University, 420008, Kazan, Russia. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Serotonin (5-HT) significantly influences migraine pain by affecting the excitability of trigeminal afferents, which are crucial for pain signaling.
  • The study found that 5-HT can induce various firing patterns in nociceptive fibers, with different receptor antagonists either reducing or completely blocking its pro-nociceptive effects.
  • 5-HT shows both peripheral excitatory actions, such as increasing nociceptive firing and releasing CGRP, and central inhibitory effects that can mitigate pain signaling in the brainstem.

Atherosclerosis assessment and rheumatoid arthritis.

Z Rheumatol

May 2018

Medical Faculty Department of Rheumatology, Abant Izzet Baysal University, Bolu, Turkey.

Background And Aim: Rheumatoid arthritis is associated with increased morbidity and mortality due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is an enzyme of phospholipase A2; it plays an important role in inflammation and atherosclerosis. Herein we aimed to investigate whether Lp-PLA2 activity is associated with atherosclerosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and compare the Lp-PLA2 activity with carotid intima media thickness (CIMT).

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the time since a myocardial infarction (MI) and the risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmic events (VTEs) in patients with left ventricular dysfunction and mild symptoms of heart failure.

Background: Patients with left ventricular dysfunction after MI are at high risk for VTEs.

Methods: Ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular fibrillation (VF), or death as a function of time since MI was assessed in 693 patients enrolled in the MADIT-CRT (Multicenter Automatic Defibrillator Implantation Trial-Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy).

Chronic migraine causes a serious labour loss and disability in the society and increases the risk of depression and anxiety by negatively affecting the quality of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A) treatment on efficacy before and after treatment in our cases with chronic migraine as well as on depression, anxiety and disability caused by migraine. According to the International Headache Classification (ICHD-III beta version), 60 adult patients who were diagnosed with chronic migraine were included in the study.

Nucleotide homeostasis and purinergic nociceptive signaling in rat meninges in migraine-like conditions.

Purinergic Signal

September 2016

Department of Neurobiology, A.I.Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, University of Eastern Finland, Neulaniementie 2, P.O. Box 1627, 70211, Kuopio, Finland.

Extracellular ATP is suspected to contribute to migraine pain but regulatory mechanisms controlling pro-nociceptive purinergic mechanisms in the meninges remain unknown. We studied the peculiarities of metabolic and signaling pathways of ATP and its downstream metabolites in rat meninges and in cultured trigeminal cells exposed to the migraine mediator calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Under resting conditions, meningeal ATP and ADP remained at low nanomolar levels, whereas extracellular AMP and adenosine concentrations were one-two orders higher.

Transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) is an effective, safe and cost-effective technique that allows for sampling of the mediastinal lymph node and peribronchial lesions. It is used in bronchogenic carcinoma staging, peribronchial and submucosal lesions, diagnosis of sarcoidosis and tuberculosis, differentiating submucosal invasion, and in diagnosing mediastinal masses. From our experience at the University of Abant Izzet Baysal and from a review of the literature, we discuss the adequacy and the differential diagnosis of aspiration material obtained by TBNA and cytopathological-histopathological evaluation in intrathoracic lymphadenopathies to increase the success rate of the TBNA method.

Objective: The evaluation of the functional significance of coronary artery stenosis is of great clinical importance in patient management or for decisions concerning coronary intervention. Recently, fragmented QRS (fQRS) on electrocardiography (ECG) has been introduced as a predictor of myocardial scarring as well as myocardial ischaemia in coronary artery disease. We aimed to investigate any additive value of fQRS to myocardial perfusion SPECT in evaluating the functional significance of the intermediate degree of coronary stenosis.
