Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 28,311 COVID-19 patients, 11.3% had dementia, and mortality rates were notably higher in dementia patients (26.5%) compared to non-dementia patients (11.5%) before matching, but the difference narrowed after adjustments.
  • * Although the study found a connection between dementia and increased COVID-19 mortality (with an odds ratio of 1.33), the impact was less significant than reported in prior research, highlighting the need for further investigation on how dementia affects COVID-19 outcomes.

Little is known about the effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on mental health compared with other respiratory infections. Thus, the aim of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate whether COVID-19 diagnosis is associated with a significant increase in the incidence of depression and anxiety disorder in patients followed in general practices in Germany compared with acute upper respiratory infection diagnosis. This study included all patients diagnosed with symptomatic or asymptomatic COVID-19 for the first time in 1198 general practices in Germany between March 2020 and May 2021.

Several studies revealed that mental disorders' prevalence increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in young and female individuals. Such studies represent individuals' subjective perceptions and not the number of mental health cases treated in primary care. Thus, this study aimed to describe the changes in depression, anxiety, and stress disorder diagnoses in General Practitioner (GP) practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Department of Neurology, Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig, Germany; MindBrainBody Institute at the Berlin School of Mind and Brain, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berlin, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • - Acute stress triggers a broad physiological response that is beneficial when it starts and ends quickly, primarily controlled by the brain, which is also impacted by stress itself.
  • - This study explored how stress affects whole-brain network topology, specifically focusing on stress reactivity and recovery using resting-state fMRI in healthy young males undergoing the Trier Social Stress Test.
  • - Results showed significant changes in the thalamus, a central hub in the brain, which correlated with subjective stress levels and persisted even after the stress ended, highlighting its role in processing stress information.
