Atmospheric parameters play an important role in driving hydrogen sulphide concentrations in ambient air near waste management centres.

Environ Monit Assess

November 2023

Technical Faculty, Doctoral Study in Environmental Engineering, University of Rijeka, Vukovarska 38, 51000, Rijeka, Croatia.

Emissions of odorous compounds are major contributors to public opposition when siting waste management facilities. Thus, it is essential to understand how to minimise the concentration of odour-causing chemicals in ambient air surrounding such facilities. Although the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere is a function of meteorology, there is limited data on the atmospheric parameters that drive ambient air concentrations of odour-causing substances in settlements near waste management facilities.

Psoriasis is a recurrent, chronic, immune-mediated, systemic inflammatory disease of the skin, joints, and other organic systems. After atopic dermatitis, chronic stationary psoriasis is the most common inflammatory skin disease, affecting an average of 2-4% of the world's population. The disease carries a significant burden due to its numerous comorbidities and the major impact on patients' social and emotional aspects of life.

The possible involvement of granulysin mediated cytotoxicity in keratinocytes disruption in lichen planus.

Med Hypotheses

April 2021

Department of Dermatovenerology, Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, Medical Faculty, University of Rijeka, Krešimirova 42, 51000 Rijeka, Croatia. Electronic address:

Lichen planus is a chronic mucocutanous disorder histopathologically characterized with a keratinocytes apoptosis, subsequent basal cell layer liquefaction and accumulation of the inflammatory infiltrate in papillary dermis. A formation of apoptotic bodies in basal cell layer is due to a cytotoxic lymphocyte attack to the basal keratinocytes. It has been demonstrated that the cytotoxic molecules included in this attack are perforin and granzyme B.

This study aimed to examine whether the oral supplementation of vitamins C and E during a seven-day high salt diet (HS; ~14 g salt/day) prevents microvascular endothelial function impairment and changes oxidative status caused by HS diet in 51 (26 women and 25 men) young healthy individuals. Laser Doppler flowmetry measurements demonstrated that skin post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (PORH), and acetylcholine-induced dilation (AChID) were significantly impaired in the HS group, but not in HS+C+E group, while sodium nitroprusside-induced dilation remained unaffected by treatments. Serum oxidative stress markers: Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), 8-iso prostaglandin-F2α, and leukocytes' intracellular hydrogen peroxide (HO) production were significantly increased, while ferric-reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and catalase concentrations were decreased in the HS group.

Psoriasis is considered to be a cytokine-driven immune-mediated disease, although the cell cytotoxicity mechanisms involved remain unrecognized. Herein, we analyzed granulysin expression in different lymphocyte subsets of peripheral blood of 40 psoriatic patients (20 with severe and 20 with mild psoriasis) and seven sample of psoriatic skin. The simultaneous detection of intracellular granulysin and cell surface antigens was performed using flow cytometry in peripheral blood and immunohistochemistry in skin lesions.

Ratio of End-Systolic Volume to Left Atrial Area Is a Solid Benchmark of Systolic Dysfunction in Non-Ischemic Cardiomyopathies.

Med Sci Monit

December 2018

Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, J. J. Strossmayer Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health, Osijek, Croatia.

BACKGROUND Impairment of systolic function and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) are well-known negative prognostic markers in non-ischemic cardiomyopathies (NICMPs). There is limited knowledge of the geometrical rearrangements of the ventricle volumes over size of the left atrium and their connections with systolic dysfunction and existence of LGE. MATERIAL AND METHODS Consecutive cases of NICMPs with impaired systolic function and controls were included from a computerized database of cardiac magnetic resonance exams for a 2.

Possible role of circulating endothelial cells in patients after acute myocardial infarction.

Med Hypotheses

August 2018

Department of Anesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka, Brace Branchetta 20, 51000 Rijeka, Croatia. Electronic address:

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) occurs as a result of insufficient myocardial perfusion leading to cell necrosis. This is most commonly due to the obstruction of the coronary artery by ruptured atherosclerotic plaque and thrombosis. Damaged ischemic and necrotic myocardial cells release pro-inflammatory substances in tissue and plasma, leading to a systemic inflammatory response.

Spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) results in overproduction of reactive oxygen species leading to tissue oxidative stress which impacts the neuronal network in the spinal cord as well as glial cells. We investigated the expression of Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in neurons and glial cells after occlusion of the abdominal aorta followed by IRI as well as the time-dependent expression of Nrf2 in the same cells. The experimental method of transient aortic occlusion was carried out on rats by cross-clamping of the abdominal aorta for 45 minutes.

BACKGROUND The effects of focal hypertrophy on geometry of the left ventricle and systolic function have not been studied in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), despite the fact that the former is the most prominent disease characteristic. The aim of our study was to analyze systolic function over ventricle geometry, generating a functional index made from left ventricle end diastolic dimension (LVEDD) divided by end diastolic thickness of the region with maximal extent of hypertrophy and interventricular septum. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our hospital database of cardiac magnetic resonance was screened for HCM.

It is now clear that recognition of nascent tumors by the immune system is critical for survival of the host against cancer. During cancer immunoediting, the ability of the tumor to escape immune recognition is important for tumor development. The immune system recognizes tumors via the presence of classical Ags and also by conserved innate mechanisms.
