Decisions on life-sustaining treatment depend on evaluating fundamental ethical principles regarding taking human life. This study aimed to compare the Islamic standpoint with secular views on ethical decision-making in end-of-life care. We conducted a scoping review to analyze and compare articles published in 2000-2022, regarding ethical criteria for withdrawing life-prolonging treatments in dying patients, and the final decision-maker in such cases.

Background: There have been many challenges with clinical interventions and policy decisions to enhance the quality of life and care for patients facing life-threatening illnesses, thus highlighting the need for ethical considerations and guidelines for palliative care of terminally ill patients.
Aim: To document the development of guidelines for addressing ethical concerns in the palliative care of terminally ill patients in Islamic Republic of Iran.
Methods: The guidelines were developed in 4 phases: a scoping review of existing palliative care guidelines on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and 2 Persian databases; focus group discussions to improve the drafts guidelines; online opinion poll of 32 experts, including ethicists, religious scholars, psychologists, palliative care specialists, and sociologists; and a national workshop to produce the final guidelines for government approval.

Methods: We conducted a non-systematic scoping review on PubMed and Google Scholar for drafting the guidelines for ethical management of infectious disease outbreaks in Islamic Republic of Iran.

Considering the importance of respecting and observing patients' rights, this study aimed to assess the level of observance of hospitalized patients' rights from both patients' and health-care workers' (HCWs) perspectives. This cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study reports the responses of 486 patients and 887 HCWs in a public referral university hospital. The study illustrates that patients and HCWs think patients' rights are respected at a medium level; however, HCWs reported lower levels of respect for patients' rights than patients, and senior HCWs reported even lower levels than their younger colleagues.
