Flaviviruses are a diverse group of RNA viruses known for their significant impact on human health worldwide. We generated a series of reporters that included cleavage sequences from the dengue virus type 2 polyprotein and co-transfected with plasmids encoding various flavivirus proteases into Aedes aegypti cells, followed by fluorescent imaging and western blot analysis for the determination of proteolytic cleavage. Recombinant flavivirus NS2B3 proteases from medically significant and insect-specific flaviviruses were able to process reporters encoding cleavage sequences from the dengue virus type 2 polyprotein in vitro including proteases from dengue virus types 1-4, Zika virus, yellow fever virus, Aedes flavivirus, and cell-fusing agent virus.

Early interactions between Leishmania-macrophages (MQ) of host and effect of sand fly saliva are central to leishmaniasis outcome. Macrophages are able to kill or act as long-term hosts of parasite depending on host immunity. It proved that immunogenic proteins in sand fly saliva mostly have an exacerbating effect on leishmaniasis by up-regulating cytokines.

Evolutionary novelties are commonly identified as drivers of lineage diversification, with key innovations potentially triggering adaptive radiation. Nevertheless, testing hypotheses on the role of evolutionary novelties in promoting diversification through deep time has proven challenging. Here we unravel the role of the raptorial appendages, with evolutionary novelties for predation, in the macroevolution of a predatory insect lineage, the Superfamily Mantispoidea (mantidflies, beaded lacewings, thorny lacewings, and dipteromantispids), based on a new dated phylogeny and quantitative evolutionary analyses on modern and fossil species.

The study has generated visible aerosols with the diameter of 11 to 35 µm from the kenaf cellulose nanofiber (KCNF) impregnated with the temephos (KCNF+T) in water suspension. The study aimed to determine whether the KCNF+T aerosols are capable to elicit neurotoxicity in the adult mosquitoes via the respiratory exposure route by observing their behavioural response and measuring its body acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity. Adult Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were assigned to one negative control group and three treatment groups namely, distilled water (vehicle control), KCNF and KCNF+T.

The West Africa One Health project is a multi-country project designed to utilise the One Health approach and deploy the Community Action Networks (CAN), a concept rooted in the principles of community-based participatory research, to improve knowledge of high-risk communities on zoonoses. The majority of emerging zoonoses occur at the human-wildlife interface, of which wildlife hunters and traders are critical stakeholders. We assessed the effectiveness of a CAN-based intervention involving the use of a video documentary and case studies as model tools in improving the knowledge of zoonoses among wildlife hunters and traders in Epe, an established hunting community in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging zoonotic virus transmitted primarily by mosquitoes. Since its introduction into Europe from Africa during the late 20th century, it has caused mortality within populations of passerine birds and captive owls, and can on occasion lead to disease in humans. USUV was first detected in the UK in 2020 and has become endemic, having been detected in either birds and/or mosquitoes every subsequent year.

The application of exogenous RNA for gene-silencing strategies has gained significant traction in agriculture, offering a highly efficient and eco-friendly alternative to conventional plant protection methods. This success has been driven by advances in biotechnology, from the design of long double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) and small interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules to the development of nanocarrier systems that address the challenge of RNA delivery into plant cells. In particular, polymer-based nanocarriers have emerged as a promising solution for enhancing the stability and delivery efficiency of RNA molecules.

In individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI), rapid skeletal muscle atrophy and metabolic dysfunction pose profound rehabilitation challenges, often resulting in substantial loss of muscle mass and function. This study evaluates the effect of combined neuromuscular electrical stimulation (Comb-NMES) on skeletal muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and inflammatory signaling within the acute phase of SCI. We applied a novel Comb-NMES regimen, integrating both high-frequency resistance and low-frequency aerobic protocols on the vastus lateralis muscle, to participants early post-SCI.
