Background: The management of thyroid nodules diagnosed as Bethesda III by fine-needle aspiration presents certain challenges, and there is an urgent need for a non-invasive and accurate method for early identification of the benign or malignant nature of Bethesda III nodules. Our objective is to develop and validate a clinical-radiomics nomogram based on preoperative ultrasound (US) images and clinical features, for predicting the malignancy of thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology (Bethesda III).

Methods: Between June 2017 and June 2022, we conducted a retrospective study on 274 patients with surgically confirmed indeterminate cytology (Bethesda III) across two separate medical centers in Shanghai.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to differentiate between benign and malignant breast tumors using ultrasound and radiomics, focusing on both the nodules and the surrounding tissues.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 379 patients with breast nodules categorized as BI-RADS 3-5, applying statistical and machine learning techniques to create a model that can predict tumor malignancy.
  • The study found a total of 124 malignant nodules and 255 benign ones, with no significant age or radiomic score differences between the training and testing groups.

The two most commonly used airway management techniques during general anaesthesia are supraglottic airway devices and tracheal tubes. In older patients undergoing elective non-cardiothoracic surgery under general anaesthesia with positive pressure ventilation, we hypothesised that a composite measure of in-hospital postoperative pulmonary complications would be less frequent when a supraglottic airway device was used compared with a tracheal tube. We studied patients aged ≥ 70 years in 17 clinical centres.

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of whole-tumor apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) histogram analysis for improving the differentiation of endometriosis-related tumors: seromucinous borderline tumor (SMBT), clear cell carcinoma (CCC) and endometrioid carcinoma (EC).

Methods: Clinical features, solid component ADC (ADC) and whole-tumor ADC histogram-derived parameters (volume, the ADC, 10th, 50th and 90th percentile ADCs, inhomogeneity, skewness, kurtosis and entropy) were compared among 22 SMBTs, 42 CCCs and 21 ECs. Statistical analyses were performed using chi-square test, one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test, and receiver operating characteristic curves.

Background: Preoperative differentiation of borderline from malignant epithelial ovarian tumors (BEOT from MEOT) can impact surgical management. MRI has improved this assessment but subjective interpretation by radiologists may lead to inconsistent results.

Purpose: To develop and validate an objective MRI-based machine-learning (ML) assessment model for differentiating BEOT from MEOT, and compare the performance against radiologists' interpretation.

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) regulate many biological processes ranging from tumorigenesis to cancer metastasis. MicroRNA-223 (miR-223) acts as a novel tumor suppressor in bladder cancer (BC), however its target genes involved in BC, the molecular mechanisms governing its expression remain largely unknown. Both gain-of-function and loss of function experiments were performed to investigate the role of miR-223 in BC cells.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in females globally and is more aggressive at later stages. Chromosome region maintenance 1 (CRM1) is involved in the nuclear export of proteins and RNAs and has been associated with a number of malignancies. However, the clinicopathological significance of its expression in BC remains to be elucidated therefore this was investigated in the present study.

Nucleophosmin (NPM) and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Her-2) are abnormally expressed in various types of human malignant tumors, including gastric cancer, and have been closely associated with cancer chemoresistance. However, their interaction and roles in oxaliplatin resistance are not fully understood. Therefore, the present study aimed to elucidate the relationship between NPM and Her-2 in gastric cancer cell lines and clinical samples, and further investigated their role in the resistance of gastric cancer to oxaliplatin.
