Natural phenylethanoid glycoside forsythoside A alleviates androgenetic alopecia by selectively inhibiting TRPV3 channels in mice.

Eur J Pharmacol

January 2025

Department of Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy, Qingdao Medical College of Qingdao University, Qingdao, China; Institute of Innovative Drugs, Qingdao University, Qingdao, China.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgen derivate, is known to be a key factor involved in androgenetic alopecia. DHT suppresses the growth of outer root sheath cells and induces apoptosis of hair keratinocytes, thereby causing hair follicle miniaturization and hair regrowth inhibition. Forsythoside A, a natural substance derived from Forsythia suspensa, has been shown to reduce DHT-induced apoptosis in human hair cells and suppress hair regrowth inhibition induced by DHT in mice.

Introduction And Aim: The main categories of drugs employed for medical expulsive therapy in patients with ureteral calculi (UC) are alpha-blockers (α-B) and beta-adrenoceptor agonists. This meta-analysis evaluated the safety and effectiveness of α-B versus mirabegron (MIR) in treating UC.

Methods: From January 1980 to October 2024, we extensively searched the Pubmed, Web of science, Cochrane and EMBASE databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the effectiveness of α-B and MIR in managing UC.

Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou 450001, People's Republic of China.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is often associated with excessive inflammatory response and highly dysregulated gut microbiota. Traditional treatments utilize drugs to manage inflammation, potentially with probiotic therapy as an adjuvant. However, current standard practices often suffer from detrimental side effects, low bioavailability, and unsatisfactory therapeutic outcomes.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of silencing Ras homolog family member C (RhoC) on the proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, migration, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) and its molecular mechanisms.

Methods: A total of 27 SACC lesions and normal salivary gland tissues that were surgically resected at Qingdao Municipal Hospital from January 1, 2019 to March 1, 2024 were selected, and the expression levels of RhoC were detected by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Three small interfering RNA (siRNAs) were designed to target the RhoC gene sequence, transfected into SACC-LM and SACC-83 cell lines, and evaluated for transfection efficiency.

Department of Anorectal Surgery, Qilu Hospital (Qingdao), Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Qingdao, China.

Introduction: Plasmids, the most important and versatile bacterial extrachromosomal DNA Molecules, has have been a center central topic for bacterial genetics and biology. However, the inability of short-read high-throughput sequencing methods to reliably assemble plasmids makes it difficult to investigate the diversity of plasmid structures and functions.

Methods: In this work, we used the long-read Nanopore sequencing method to address this issue, by producing high quality whole genome sequences of 33 bacterial strains from 11 perianal abscess-suffering patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Ginsenoside Rh1 (G-Rh1) has potential therapeutic effects on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), although its impact was previously unclear, as it has shown effectiveness against other cancers like breast and colon cancer.
  • The study used various methods, including bioinformatics and in vitro & in vivo experiments, to examine G-Rh1's effects on HCC cells and the immune environment of tumors.
  • Results indicated that G-Rh1 did not significantly impact HCC cell growth but improved the immune response by enhancing the infiltration of key immune cells and increasing MHC-I expression, suggesting its role in fighting cancer by modifying the tumor microenvironment.

Background: Studies involving chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) have mostly focused on bilateral cases, making unilateral CRSwNP inadequately recognized. This study examined the differences in clinical characteristics, outcomes, and risk factors for poor outcomes between unilateral and bilateral CRSwNP to facilitate a better assessment in the two groups.

Methods: Demographic information, tissue and blood cells, endoscopic scores, Lund-Mackay scores, recurrence rates, and disease control conditions were compared between 310 unilateral and 596 bilateral CRSwNP patients.

Prognostic value of immunotherapy in advanced NSCLC based on baseline and dynamic changes in HALP.

Biomol Biomed

December 2024

Department of Oncology, Affiliated Qingdao Central Hospital of Qingdao University, Qingdao Cancer Hospital, Qingdao, China.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) enhance the tumor-killing ability of T-cells in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), improving overall survival (OS) and revolutionizing treatment for advanced stages. However, challenges remain, such as low response rates and the lack of effective markers for selecting candidates. This study evaluated the impact of hemoglobin, albumin, and platelet (HALP), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) on the efficacy of immunotherapy and survival outcomes in advanced NSCLC.

The protective effect of erythropoietin and its novel derived peptides in peripheral nerve injury.

Int Immunopharmacol

September 2024

Department of Immunology, School of Basic Medicine, Qingdao University, Qingdao, Shandong 266071, PR China. Electronic address:

Peripheral nerve injury seriously endangers human life and health, but there is no clinical drug for the treatment of peripheral nerve injury, so it is imperative to develop drugs to promote the repair of peripheral nerve injury. Erythropoietin (EPO) not only has the traditional role of promoting erythropoiesis, but also has a tissue-protective effect. Over the past few decades, researchers have confirmed that EPO has neuroprotective effects.

State Key Laboratory of Proteomics, National Center for Protein Sciences (Beijing), Beijing Proteome Research Center, Beijing Institute of Lifeomics, Beijing 102206, China.

Stable infiltration of myeloid cells, especially tumor-associated M2 macrophages, acts as one of the essential features of the tumor immune microenvironment by promoting the malignant progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the factors affecting the infiltration of M2 macrophages are not fully understood. In this study, we found the molecular subtypes of HCC with the worst prognosis are characterized by immune disorders dominated by myeloid cell infiltration.

  • Chylothorax is a complication after lung cancer surgery, typically managed with diet control, but might require surgery if conservative methods don't work.
  • A study of 2942 patients found that pleural effusion triglyceride levels after 2 days on a low-fat diet are better indicators of prognosis than drainage volume.
  • Using a threshold of 1.33 mmol/L for triglyceride levels showed high accuracy (100% sensitivity, 80.6% specificity) in predicting patient outcomes, aiding surgeons in decision-making for potential surgical interventions.
