Introduction: This study aims to establish a comprehensive, multi-level approach for tackling tropical diseases by proactively anticipating and managing Persistent Inflammation, Immunosuppression, and Catabolism Syndrome (PICS) within the initial 14 days of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission. The primary objective is to amalgamate a diverse array of indicators and pathogenic microbial data to pinpoint pivotal predictive variables, enabling effective intervention specifically tailored to the context of tropical diseases.
Methods: A focused analysis was conducted on 1733 patients admitted to the ICU between December 2016 and July 2019.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a severe complication of sepsis, however, its exact mechanism remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate whether clusterin is essential to the development of SAE during the aging process of astrocytes. In the study, septic mice were established with cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and lipopolysaccharides were applied to astrocytes in vitro.

Clinically, chronic pain and depression often coexist in multiple diseases and reciprocally reinforce each other, which greatly escalates the difficulty of treatment. The neural circuit mechanism underlying the chronic pain/depression comorbidity remains unclear. The present study reports that two distinct subregions in the paraventricular thalamus (PVT) play different roles in this pathological process.

Satellite nodules is a key clinical characteristic which has prognostic value of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Currently, there is no gene-level predictive model for Satellite nodules in liver cancer. For the 377 HCC cases collected from the dataset of Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), their original pathological data were analyzed to extract information regarding satellite nodules status as well as other relevant pathological data.

In the era of personalized cancer treatment, understanding the complexities of tumor biology and immune modulation is paramount. This comprehensive analysis delves into the multifaceted role of zinc finger protein 207 (ZNF207) in pan-cancer, shedding light on its involvement in tumorigenesis, immune evasion, and therapeutic implications. Through integrated genomic and clinical data analysis, we reveal consistent upregulation of ZNF207 across diverse cancer types, highlighting its potential as a prognostic marker and therapeutic target, particularly for liver cancers.

Ovarian cancer is a common malignant tumor in women, and 70 % of ovarian cancer patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Drug chemotherapy is an important method for treating ovarian cancer, but recurrence and chemotherapy resistance often lead to treatment failure. In this study, we screened 10 extracts of Tripterygium wilfordii, a traditional Chinese herb, and found that triptonide had potent anti-ovarian cancer activity and an IC50 of only 3.

Background: Although the popliteal vein approach is commonly used for catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) treatment in patients with acute lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT), CDT via a new access route, the posterior tibial vein, is also used and has demonstrated good results. However, this tibial approach has not been tested in large samples. In this article, we compare the early efficacy of CDT using the tibial and popliteal vein approaches for the treatment of acute mixed lower extremity DVT.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is critical for drug resistance in colorectal cancer (CRC). The abundant collagen within the ECM significantly influences tumor progression and matrix-mediated drug resistance (MMDR) by binding to discoidin domain receptor 1 (DDR1), but the specific mechanisms by which tumor cells modulate ECM via DDR1 and ultimately regulate TME remain poorly understand. Furthermore, overcoming drug resistance by modulating the tumor ECM remains a challenge in CRC treatment.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is among the most common malignancies worldwide and is characterized by high rates of morbidity and mortality, posing a serious threat to human health. Interventional embolization therapy is the main treatment against middle- and late-stage liver cancer, but its efficacy is limited by the performance of embolism, hence the new embolic materials have provided hope to the inoperable patients. Especially, hydrogel materials with high embolization strength, appropriate viscosity, reliable security and multifunctionality are widely used as embolic materials, and can improve the efficacy of interventional therapy.

Chronic pain can induce mood disorders and cognitive dysfunctions, such as anxiety, depression, and learning and memory impairment in humans. However, the specific neural network involved in anxiety- and depression-like behaviors and learning and memory impairment caused by chronic pain remains poorly understood. In this study, behavioral test results showed that chronic pain induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, and learning and memory impairment in male mice.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between PLAUR and clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and its potential mechanism of promoting tumor progression.
Methods: The expression levels and clinical significance of PLAUR, along with the associated signaling pathways, were extensively investigated in ccRCC samples obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).

Elevated levels of blood glucose in patients with ischemic stroke are associated with a worse prognosis. The present study aimed to explore whether hyperglycemia promotes microglial pyroptosis by increasing the oxygen extraction rate in an acute ischemic stroke model. C57BL/6 mice that underwent middle cerebral artery occlusion were used for assessment of blood glucose level and neurological function.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection playsa significant role in the etiology and progression of liver-relatedpathologies, encompassing chronic hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and eventual hepatocellularcarcinoma (HCC). Notably, HBV infection stands as the primary etiologicalfactor driving the development of HCC. Given the significant contribution ofHBV infection to liver diseases, a comprehensive understanding of immunedynamics in the liver microenvironment, spanning chronic HBV infection, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and HCC, is essential.

Background: Some recent observational studies have shown that gut microbiota composition is associated with puerperal sepsis (PS) and no causal effect have been attributed to this. The aim of this study was to determine a causal association between gut microbiota and PS by using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.
Methods: This study performed MR analysis on the publicly accessible genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary level data in order to explore the causal effects between gut microbiota and PS.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), renowned for its exceptional mechanical properties and bio-stability, is considered a promising alternative to traditional metal-based implants. However, the inferior bactericidal activity and the limited angiogenic and osteogenic properties of PEEK remain the three major obstacles to osseointegration . To overcome these obstacles, in this work, a versatile heterostructured nanocoating was conceived and equipped on PEEK.

Surgery and targeted therapy are of equal importance for colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment. However, complete CRC tumor resection remains challenging, and new targeted agents are also needed for efficient CRC treatment. Cadherin 17 (CDH17) is a membrane protein that is highly expressed in CRC and, therefore, is an ideal target for imaging-guided surgery and therapeutics.
