In this study, we investigated the role of circular RNA_30032 (circRNA_30032) in renal fibrosis and the underlying mechanisms. The study was carried out using TGF-β1-induced BUMPT cells and unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO)-induced mice, respectively, as and models. CircRNA_30032 expression was significantly increased by 9.

Our previous study demonstrated that the methyl-CpG-binding domain protein 2 (MBD2) mediates vancomycin (VAN)-induced acute kidney injury (AKI). However, the role and regulation of MBD2 in septic AKI are unknown. Herein, MBD2 was induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in Boston University mouse proximal tubules (BUMPTs) and mice.

The prediction of mortality for septic acute kidney injury (AKI) has been assessed by a number of potential biomarkers, including long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). However, the validation of lncRNAs as biomarkers, particularly for the early stages of septic AKI, is still warranted. Our results indicate that the lncRNA TCONS_00016233 is upregulated in plasma of sepsis-associated non-AKI and AKI patients, but a higher cutoff threshold (9.

The molecular mechanism underlying the transition of acute kidney injury (AKI) to chronic kidney disease (CKD) induced by vancomycin (VAN) remains largely unknown. : The mice model of VAN drives AKI to CKD was developed to investigate the role and molecular mechanism of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). The EGF receptor mutant (Wa-2) mice and gefitinib were used to inactivation of EGFR.

The United States are amid an opioid overdose epidemic; we are challenged to provide non-addicting/non-pharmacological alternatives to assist in pain attenuation. There are proven strategies available to manage chronic pain effectively without opioids. Utilization review providers for insurance companies often ignore medicine based scientific peer-reviewed studies that warn against the chronic use of opioid medications, as well as the lack of evidence to support long-term use of opioids for pain.

Despite DNA methylation occurred in acute kidney injury (AKI), how it influenced progression of AKI remains unclear. Methyl-CpG-binding domain protein 2 (MBD2), a protein readers of methylation, was used to analyze the impact of DNA methylation on vancomycin (VAN)-induced AKI. Here, in cultured human kidney tubular epithelial cells (HK-2), we show that knockdown of MBD2 by siRNA attenuated VAN-induced apoptosis, caspase activity, and the expression of BAX and cleaved caspase 3.

Inflammatory sacroiliitis or the seronegative axial spondyloarthropathies often presents as back pain or sacroiliac joint pain of more than 3-month duration with inflammatory symptoms and typically in patients younger than 45 years of age. Imaging plays an important role in diagnosis and disease monitoring. This article addresses the appropriate sequence of initial imaging for evaluation of a suspected spondyloarthropathy, the imaging follow-up of treatment response and the special considerations for imaging of trauma in patients with ankylosis of the spine.

Infection of the musculoskeletal system is a common clinical problem. Differentiating soft tissue from osseous infection often determines the appropriate clinical therapeutic course. Radiographs are the recommend initial imaging examination, and although often not diagnostic in acute osteomyelitis, can provide anatomic evaluation and alternative diagnoses influencing subsequent imaging selection and interpretation.

Stress fractures, including both fatigue and insufficiency types, are frequently encountered in clinical practice as a source of pain in both athletes and patients with predisposing conditions. Radiography is the imaging modality of choice for baseline diagnosis. MRI has greatly improved our ability to diagnose radiographically occult stress fractures.

Pathogenic role of p53 in AKI remains controversial and the underlying mechanism is unclear. Here, we tested whether the inhibition of p53 may ameliorate vancomycin (VAN) induced acute kidney injury (AKI). Mice with p53 knock out (p53-KO) were resistant to VAN induced AKI, indicated by the analysis of renal function, histology, and apoptosis.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to provide validity evidence for infant lumbar puncture (ILP) checklist and global rating scale (GRS) instruments when used by residents to assess simulated ILP performances and to compare these metrics to previously obtained attending rater data.
Methods: In 2009, the International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research, and Education (INSPIRE) developed checklist and GRS scoring instruments, which were previously validated among attending raters when used to assess simulated ILP performances. Video recordings of 60 subjects performing an LP on an infant simulator were collected; 20 performed by subjects in 3 categories (beginner, intermediate, and expert).

Lipid accumulation in renal cells has been implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity-related kidney disease, but the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. Szeto et al. now unravel a central role of mitochondrial dysfunction in a high fat diet-induced glomerulopathy and proximal tubular injury.

Blepharochalasis is a rare disorder of unknown etiology defined by loose, atrophic periorbital skin following recurrent episodes of eyelid edema. Characteristic histopathology shows complete absence of elastic fibers. The current case progressed after multiple episodes of crying, which may be related to matrix metalloproteinase dysregulation.

Objectives/hypothesis: Determine swallowing mechanics associated with the first and second epiglottic movements, that is, movement to horizontal and full inversion, respectively, to provide a clinical interpretation of impaired epiglottic function.
Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Methods: A heterogeneous cohort of patients with swallowing difficulties was identified (n = 92).

This is a retrospective study of 14 cases of children with Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS), the most prominent feature of which is acquired aphasia. These children were followed at a tertiary care pediatric epilepsy center. From the research data base, all LKS cases with neuropsychological evaluation were extracted.

The pretreatment neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived from differential white blood cell counts, has been previously associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer. Little data exist, however, concerning this association in Black patients, who are known to have lower neutrophil counts than other racial groups. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 236 Black and 225 non-Hispanic White breast cancer patients treated at a single institution.

Background: Chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor of the head and neck. Because of the limited clinical data, no studies have conducted a thorough comparison between head and neck chondrosarcomas and those arising at other body sites.
Methods: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, we compared 682 patients with chondrosarcomas of the head and neck with 4757 patients with non-head and neck chondrosarcomas, evaluating disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS) based on tumor location, histology, grade, stage, and treatment.

Aim: To determine swallowing outcomes and hyolaryngeal mechanics associated with post radiation therapy head and neck cancer (rtHNC) patients using videofluoroscopic swallow studies.
Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, videofluoroscopic images of rtHNC patients (n = 21) were compared with age and gender matched controls (n = 21). Penetration-aspiration of the bolus and bolus residue were measured as swallowing outcome variables.

Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease in males and females. Whether obesity triggers cardiovascular disease via similar mechanisms in both the sexes is, however, unknown. In males, the adipokine leptin highly contributes to obesity-related cardiovascular disease by increasing sympathetic activity.

However, not all patients return for OST. Barriers to follow-up evaluation exist and are poorly understood.
