Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the importance of evaluating biochemical markers in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) grades 4 and 5 undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life.
  • Researchers collected detailed clinical histories and blood samples from 312 patients, identifying diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy as the most common causes of CKD.
  • The findings suggest that a tailored panel of biochemical tests can enhance management strategies and monitor disease progression in MHD patients, facilitating better clinical practices.

Unlabelled: Intrasphenoidal encephalocoeles are acquired or congenital herniations of meninges and brain parenchyma through a structural sphenoid bone defect. Acquired causes are most common, either iatrogenic, post-traumatic, or spontaneous. However, defects in the lateral wall of the sphenoid sinus are uncommon and cephalocoeles through them relatively underexplored in current literature, warranting dedicated attention to unravel their complexities.

CD68 expression in the placenta of gestational diabetic mothers: A case-control study.

Indian J Pathol Microbiol

December 2023

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mallareddy Medical College for Women, Jeedimetla, Hyderabad, Telangana, India.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as any degree of glucose intolerance with the onset or first recognition during pregnancy and is the most common metabolic complication of pregnancy. Significant maternal and fetal complications can result from undiagnosed or inadequately treated GDM.

Aim: To investigate the difference in the expression of the CD-68 marker in the Hofbauer cells (HCs) and their distribution within the villi in the placentas of diabetic and non-diabetic mothers.

Introduction: Lymphatic malformations (LMs) are an aberrant developmental anomaly of dysplastic sequestrated lymphatic vessels. Though surgical excision has been the conventional treatment modality, it has been associated with injury to adjacent structures, recurrences, and poor cosmesis. Intralesional bleomycin has shown a promising role in the treatment of LMs, and we present our experience with aqueous intralesional bleomycin in the pediatric population including infants in terms of its efficacy, complications, and parental satisfaction.

Aims: The study aimed to evaluate the presentation, management, and outcome of patients of sacrococcygeal malignant germ cell tumors (SC-MGCTs) with intraspinal extension.

Materials And Methods: Case records of all cases of SC-MGCT were reviewed to identify cases with intraspinal extension. They were evaluated in terms of their presentation, response to therapy, extent of surgical resection, recovery of neurological symptoms if any, and outcome.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is increasingly affecting individuals under 30, prompting a study to analyze the clinical and angiographic characteristics of young adults in Central India.
  • The study involved 41 patients with STEMI, mainly males (95.1%), and identified risk factors such as dyslipidemia (51.2%), tobacco use (48.8%), obesity (34.1%), and smoking (29.3%).
  • The most frequent presentation was anterior wall myocardial infarction (AWMI) (82.9%), with 61% of cases showing obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), primarily affecting the left anterior descending (LAD) artery (46.4%).

  • Ewing's sarcoma is the second most common malignant bone tumor but is rare in young children, especially neonates and infants, often leading to misdiagnoses.
  • This report highlights a case of a 4-month-old girl with soft-tissue Ewing's sarcoma that was mistaken for a benign neck mass across various evaluation methods.
  • The study also reviews guidelines regarding the timing of biopsies for neck masses in children, emphasizing the need for careful diagnosis in similar clinical scenarios.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by chronic relapsing-remitting inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The chronic inflammatory process may predispose to atherosclerosis. The aim of the study was to assess the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and its relation to subclinical atherosclerosis and to follow up cardiovascular complications in patients with UC.

Background: The art of surgery is becoming increasingly complex and dependent on scopes, screens, and technology, inviting a complex learning curve and development of hand-eye coordination and dexterity among other skills. We introduce an affordable, do-it-yourself microsurgical simulator that can be set up using a smartphone and a pair of reflective prism glasses. The glasses employ periscopic prisms on either side that reflect light perpendicularly.

The Partograph in Childbirth: An Absolute Essentiality or a Mere Exercise?

J Obstet Gynaecol India

February 2018

Purandare's Chowpatty Maternity and Gynecological Hospital, 31/C, Dr N A Purandare Marg, Chowpatty Seaface, Mumbai, 400007 India.

Article Synopsis
  • WHO recommends the partograph as a low-tech tool for detecting complications during childbirth, but its use in resource-limited settings remains low despite training efforts.
  • Proper use of the partograph can significantly improve outcomes for mothers and babies by ensuring that labor is monitored effectively and complications are addressed promptly.
  • To improve the use of the partograph, healthcare systems need to create supportive environments through training and addressing the challenges faced by health workers in using this tool.

Iron deficiency anemia is a significant problem worldwide and more so in developing countries, like India. The prevention and treatment of iron deficiency is a major public health goal in India It is now well recognized that iron deficiency has detrimental effects in patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension, and possibly in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Around one-third of all patients with HF, and around one-half of patients with pulmonary hypertension, are affected by iron deficiency.

Study of Nitrosative Stress in 'Pregnancy Induced Hypertension'.

J Clin Diagn Res

March 2017

Professor, Department of Musculoskeletal Sciences, Ravi Nair Physiotherapy College, Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha, Maharashtra, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypertension is a common issue during pregnancy, specifically characterized as Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH), linked to changes in endothelial function and nitric oxide levels.
  • Research aimed to investigate the role of reactive nitrogen species in PIH, comparing 60 patients with PIH to 60 without.
  • The study found lower nitric oxide levels, higher S-nitrothiol levels, and decreased thiol levels in PIH patients, suggesting that nitrosative stress may play a key role in the development of PIH due to antioxidant depletion.

Background: Oxidative stress has been implicated in various disorders including epilepsy. We studied the antioxidant status in patients with epilepsy and aimed at determining whether there was any difference in the antioxidant levels between patients and controls, patients who are not on antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), and on treatment, between individual AEDs and patients on monotherapy and polytherapy.

Materials And Methods: Antioxidant levels like catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), vitamin E, glutathione (GSH), thiol group (SH), uric acid, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were compared between 100 patients with epilepsy and equal number of controls.

Acquired central and peripheral demyelination in the same patient is a very rare feature. We report a 52-year-male patient with the chronic autoimmune hepatitis (CAH) presenting with pure motor areflexic quadriparesis from 4 months and recent onset of drowsiness of 4 days duration. Studies of imaging and electrophysiology suggested central pontine myelinolysis and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy.

Pathological criteria alone do not make an accurate diagnosis of parathyroid carcinoma in cases of well-defined organ contained lesion without local and distant metastasis. Intra-operative appearance of pale, grayish, firm tumor is highly suggestive of parathyroid carcinoma, even though this finding is not included in the pathological criteria for diagnosing a malignancy. Gross features of the tumor also should be added to the pathological criteria so as to ensure an accurate assessment of the biological behavior of the parathyroid tumor.
