Human body-sway steady-state responses to small amplitude tilts and translations of the support surface - Effects of superposition of the two stimuli.

Gait Posture

February 2023

Clinic of Neurology and Neurophysiology, Medical Centre-University of Freiburg, Faculty of Medicine, University of Freiburg, Germany. Electronic address:

Background: For humans, control of upright standing posture is a prerequisite for many physical activities. Experimentally, this control is often challenged by the motion of the support surface presented as tilt or translation, or some combination thereof. In particular, we have investigated subjects balancing in situations where tilt and translation stimuli were presented in isolation and compared it to a situation where such stimuli occurred simultaneously.

Background: Instruments to critically appraise randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are based on evidence from meta-epidemiological studies. We aim to conduct a meta-epidemiological study on the average bias associated with reported methodological trial characteristics such as random sequence generation, allocation concealment, blinding, incomplete outcome data, selective reporting, and compliance of RCTs in nutrition research.

Methods: We searched the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, for systematic reviews of RCTs, published between 01 January 2010 and 31 December 2019.

Evidence towards a continuum of impairment across neurodevelopmental disorders from basic ocular-motor tasks.

Sci Rep

October 2022

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Psychosomatics, Medical Centre - University of Freiburg, Faculty of Medicine, University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Research indicates genetic links between Schizophrenia, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), suggesting these disorders exist on a continuum based on their causes and developmental features.
  • Cognitive impairments were assessed through ocular-motor and manual-motor tasks, showing that all three disorders share inhibition deficits, but schizophrenia exhibited greater impairments and processing delays compared to ASD and ADHD.
  • The study supports a dimensional view of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, highlighting both commonalities and differences in severity of cognitive impairments among these conditions.

Fatty acid metabolism in aggressive B-cell lymphoma is inhibited by tetraspanin CD37.

Nat Commun

September 2022

Department of Tumor Immunology, Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences, Radboud University Medical Centre, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

The importance of fatty acid (FA) metabolism in cancer is well-established, yet the mechanisms underlying metabolic reprogramming remain elusive. Here, we identify tetraspanin CD37, a prognostic marker for aggressive B-cell lymphoma, as essential membrane-localized inhibitor of FA metabolism. Deletion of CD37 on lymphoma cells results in increased FA oxidation shown by functional assays and metabolomics.

Background: While effectiveness outcomes of eHealth-facilitated integrated care models (eICMs) in transplant and oncological populations are promising, implementing and sustaining them in real-world settings remain challenging. Allogeneic stem cell transplant (alloSCT) patients could benefit from an eICM to enhance health outcomes. To combat health deterioration, integrating chronic illness management, including continuous symptom and health behaviour monitoring, can shorten reaction times.

Medical Centre, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Medical Biometry and Statistics, University of Freiburg, Section of Health Care Research and Rehabilitation Research, Hugstetter Straße 49, 79106, Freiburg, Germany.

Background: Urinary stone disease is a widespread disease with tremendous impact on those affected and on societies around the globe. Nevertheless, clinical and health care research in this area seem to lag far behind cardiovascular diseases or cancer. This may be due to the lack of an immediate deadly threat from the disease and therefore less public and professional interest.

Background: Sleep health (SH) is considered a key determinant of human physiological and psychological well-being. In line with this, previous studies have found that poor sleep is associated with various psychiatric disorders, in particular, with anxiety and depression. Although little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying these associations, recent findings suggest that essential dimensions of SH are associated with altered amygdala reactivity (AR); however, evidence to date is inconsistent and reliant on small sample sizes.

Cardiovascular protection by SGLT2 inhibitors - Do anti-inflammatory mechanisms play a role?

Mol Metab

October 2022

Division of Endocrinology and Diabetology, Department of Medicine II, Medical Centre - University of Freiburg, Faculty of Medicine, University of Freiburg, 79106 Freiburg, Germany. Electronic address:

Background: Metabolic syndrome and related metabolic disturbances represent a state of low-grade inflammation, which accelerates insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) progression. Among antidiabetic medications, sodium glucose co-transporter (SGLT) 2 inhibitors are the only agents which showed remarkable reductions in heart failure (HF) hospitalizations and major cardiovascular endpoints (MACE) as well as renal endpoints regardless of diabetes status in large randomized clinical outcome trials (RCTs). Although the exact mechanisms underlying these benefits are yet to be established, growing evidence suggests that modulating inflammation by SGLT2 inhibitors may play a key role.

Long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA deficiency (LCHADD) and mitochondrial trifunctional protein (MTPD) belong to a group of inherited metabolic diseases affecting the degradation of long-chain chain fatty acids. During metabolic decompensation the incomplete degradation of fatty acids results in life-threatening episodes, coma and death. Despite fast identification at neonatal screening, LCHADD/MTPD present with progressive neurodegenerative symptoms originally attributed to the accumulation of toxic hydroxyl acylcarnitines and energy deficiency.

Mitochondria: intracellular sentinels of infections.

Med Microbiol Immunol

August 2022

Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene, Medical Centre University of Freiburg, Faculty of Medicine, 79104, Freiburg, Germany.

Structure and integrity of the mitochondrial network play important roles in many cellular processes. Loss of integrity can lead to the activation of a variety of signalling pathways and affect the cell's response to infections. The activation of such mitochondria-mediated cellular responses has implications for infection recognition, signal transduction and pathogen control.
