Background/objectives: Several surgical procedures have been proposed for the treatment of hypospadias, a common and heterogeneous congenital abnormality in males. Most surgeons utilize either a urethral stent or bladder catheter for 2-14 days as a postoperative urine diversion method depending on the severity of each case and the surgeon's preferences. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of anterior and mid-penile hypospadias repair while placing the urethral catheter for only 20 h.

TARDBP p.I383V, a recurrent alteration in Greek FTD patients.

J Neurol Sci

September 2021

Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Diagnostics, Attikon University General Hospital, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

Background: A significant proportion of FTD (Frontotemporal Degeneration) cases can be attributed to mutations in major genes such as GRN, MAPT and C9orf72. Our previous report on a Greek FTD cohort revealed the presence of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) p.I383V (rs80356740) in the TARDBP gene in three unrelated patients.

Neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is closely associated with the accumulation of pathologic tau aggregates in the form of neurofibrillary tangles. We found that a p.Asp395Gly mutation in (valosin-containing protein) was associated with dementia characterized neuropathologically by neuronal vacuoles and neurofibrillary tangles.

As the focus of the COVID-19 crisis is gradually taken away from emergency healthcare needs, increased attention is warranted on the psychological impact of the pandemic on a global level. Existing guidance on managing the COVID-19 related distress needs to be better informed by upcoming larger-scale research. Applying e-Health can be useful in dealing with the immediate psychological needs, while developing strategies to identify vulnerable populations and shifting the provision of mental health and social care to community services need to be prioritised when looking at the future.

SNAP Tests for Pancreatitis in Dogs and Cats: SNAP Canine Pancreatic Lipase and SNAP Feline Pancreatic Lipase.

Top Companion Anim Med

December 2016

Gastrointestinal Laboratory, Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA.

A clinical diagnosis of pancreatitis in dogs and cats can be challenging. Several diagnostic modalities have been evaluated over the years for the diagnosis of canine and feline pancreatitis, but most of these modalities have been shown to be of limited clinical use because of poor performance, limited availability, or because they are invasive, or all of these. Assays for the measurement of pancreatic lipase (PL) immunoreactivity [Specific canine PL (Spec cPL) in dogs and Specific feline PL (Spec fPL) in cats] were first developed approximately 15 years ago, and studies have shown that they are currently the serum tests of choice for the evaluation of canine and feline patients, respectively, suspected of having pancreatitis.

The potential role of brachytherapy in the irradiation of patients with lung cancer: a systematic review.

Clin Transl Oncol

August 2017

2nd Department Radiology, Radiotherapy Unit, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Attikon University Hospital, Athens, Greece.

To review the use of brachytherapy as an adjuvant therapy to reduce recurrences after sublobar resections and as a palliation to patients with inoperable disease. Α review of all published studies was performed to identify the recurrence rate after brachytherapy adjuvant to sublobar resection and assess the palliation of symptoms and the complications of brachytherapy as a palliative treatment. Most of the studies that we found about brachytherapy as an adjuvant therapy to sublobar resection due to patient's poor cardiopulmonary reserve showed that brachytherapy offered low recurrence rate with low toxicity.

Patient with systemic hypertension have often abnormalities of left ventricular (LV) diastolic function. Although pulsed Doppler echocardiography (PDE) is at present time the only simple widely used noninvasive method for evaluating such LV diastolic dysfunction, LV apexcardiogram (ACG) reflecting LV pressure curve changes can also be useful for evaluating LV diastolic events. In order to compare the validity of these two methods in assessing LV diastolic dysfunction, PDE and ACG were simultaneously obtained in 29 patients with chronic systemic hypertension and in 61 controls.
