Bezoars are concrete masses found within the gastrointestinal tract that can lead to obstructions. One of the most common forms of bezoars is trichobezoar, composed of swallowed hair. Many bezoars are confined to the stomach; however, a small occurrence of trichobezoars extends past the pylorus and into the duodenum, or small bowel, termed Rapunzel syndrome.

Objectives: Explore how older patients utilize their social networks to inform prognostic understanding.

Methods: In a pilot study of adults (≥65 years old) with advanced cancer, 16 patients completed surveys, social network maps, and semi-structured interviews exploring with whom they preferred to communicate about their illness. Interviews were analyzed using open-coding, and codes were categorized into emergent themes.

They are most commonly associated with a lack of hygiene and occur most commonly in school-age children, homeless populations, and densely populated areas. Effect of human endogenous retrovirus-K env gene knockout on proliferation of ovarian cancer cells.

Background: Among various human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs), the HERV-K (HML-2) group has been reported to be highly related to cancer. In pancreatic cancer cells, shRNA-mediated downregulation of HERV-K env RNA decreases cell proliferation and tumor growth through the RAS-ERK-RSK pathway; in colorectal cancer, CRISPR-Cas9 knockout (KO) of the HERV-K env gene affects tumorigenic characteristics through the nupr-1 gene.

Objective: The effect of HERV-K env KO has not been studied in ovarian cancer cell lines.

Purpose: This is the first multisite investigation of the validity of scores from the current version of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in clerkship and licensure contexts. It examined the predictive validity of MCAT scores and undergraduate grade point averages (UGPAs) for performance in preclerkship and clerkship courses and on the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge examinations. It also studied students' progress in medical school.

Mesenchymal stem cells such as human adipose tissue-derived stem cells (hADSCs) have been used as a representative therapeutic agent for tissue regeneration because of their high proliferation and paracrine factor-secreting abilities. Invariant natural killer T cells (iNKT cells) express a semi-invariant T cell receptor that recognizes certain glycolipids (including α-galactosylceramide, αGC) bound to CD1d, and can induce potent antitumor responses. Here, we assessed whether αGC could enhance the efficacy of a GM-CSF-producing tumor cell vaccine in the transgenic SV40 T antigen-driven TRAMP prostate cancer model. In healthy mice, we initially found that optimal T cell responses were obtained with αGC-pulsed TRAMP-C2 cells secreting GM-CSF and milk fat globule epidermal growth factor protein-8 (MFG-E8) with an RGD to RGE mutation (GM-CSF/RGE TRAMP-C2), combined with systemic low dose IL-12.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare benign proliferative histiocytic disorder generally affecting the cervical lymph nodes as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy. We present a unique case of multifocal soft tissue RDD originating from previous mastectomy site and retroperitoneum. The patient is a 62-year-old African American female with a prior history of bilateral breast invasive ductal adenocarcinoma.

Nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) represents a distinct phenotype within the spectrum of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), which is characterized by a range of clinical manifestations. Despite a high disease burden that is comparable to ankylosing spondylitis (also known as radiographic axSpA), there is an unmet need to recognize and effectively manage patients with active nr-axSpA.A targeted literature search was conducted in OVID (MEDLINE and Embase databases) to identify articles on nr-axSpA, including its definition, demographics, epidemiology, burden, diagnosis, clinical presentation, and treatment guidelines.

Background: Amid the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the benefits and risks of bronchoscopy remain uncertain. This study was designed to characterize bronchoscopy-related practice patterns, diagnostic yields, and adverse events involving patients with known or suspected COVID-19.

Methods: An online survey tool retrospectively queried bronchoscopists about their experiences with patients with known or suspected COVID-19 between March 20 and August 20, 2020.

Developing a portable field unit to improve well-child care.

Background: Pediatric growth tracking has been identified as a top priority by international health agencies to assess the severity of malnutrition and stunting. However, remote low-resource settings often lack the necessary infrastructure for longitudinal analysis of growth for the purposes of early identification and immediate intervention of stunting.

Methods: To address this gap, we developed a portable field unit (PFU) capable of identifying a child over the course of multiple visits, each time adding new anthropomorphic measurements.

Background: Cancer survivors over the age of 65 have unique needs due to the higher prevalence of functional and cognitive impairment, comorbidities, geriatric syndromes, and greater need for social support after chemotherapy. In this study, we will evaluate whether a Geriatric Evaluation and Management-Survivorship (GEMS) intervention improves functional outcomes important to older cancer survivors following chemotherapy.

Methods: A cluster-randomized trial will be conducted in approximately 30 community oncology practices affiliated with the University of Rochester Cancer Center (URCC) National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) Research Base.

An Amyand's hernia is defined by the presence of the vermiform appendix in the inguinal hernia sac. Most cases of Amyand's hernia are incidentally diagnosed intraoperatively while surgically reducing a right inguinal hernia. Right-sided Amyand's hernias are more common than left-sided Amyand's hernias for two reasons: the appendix is naturally located on the right side and right inguinal hernias are more common.

Background And Objectives: Uremic symptoms, including fatigue, anorexia, pruritus, nausea, paresthesia, and pain, are attributed to the accumulation of organic waste products normally cleared by the kidneys, but whether kidney function is the primary driver of changes in symptom severity over time is not known. The goal of our study was to evaluate the association between eGFR and uremic symptom severity score in patients with CKD.

Design, Setting, Participants, And Measurements: We identified 3685 participants with CKD not on dialysis in the prospective, observational Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study with baseline assessment of eGFR and uremic symptom severity.

Laterally placed expandable interbody spacers with and without adjustable lordosis improve patient outcomes: A preliminary one-year chart review.

Background/objectives: Minimally invasive lateral lumbar interbody fusion (MIS LLIF) has been employed to treat degenerative disc disease, with reduced complication profiles in comparison to other open anterior and posterior techniques. The technique permits the use of larger, coronal-spanning interbody spacers to restore height and alignment. However, large static spacers have historically been associated with iatrogenic complications during trialing and insertion.

Direct observation in a large-scale randomized trial of parent training in children with autism spectrum disorder and disruptive behavior.

A direct observation strategy (Standardized Observation Analogue Procedure, SOAP) was used in a large-scale randomized trial of parent training versus parent education in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and disruptive behavior. The 16-minute SOAP, modified from an earlier version of this same measure, included parentchild interaction to assess child behavior in a clinical laboratory setting. Despite study entry criteria for all child participants requiring moderate levels of disruptive behavior in this project, 126 of 168 children with complete SOAP data at baseline showed no disruptive behavior on this measure.
