The vocal folds vibrate to produce voice, undergoing significant stress due to contact and shearing force. The epithelium operates as the primary protective layer of the tissue against stress and vibratory damage, as well as to provide a barrier against foreign organisms and toxins. Within the vocal fold epithelium, non-epithelial cells were identified that may interrupt the epithelium and compromise the epithelial barrier's protective function.
