Humanitarian assistance is hindered by a lack of strategies to optimize care delivery through research and organized networks. Distinct from global health, humanitarian assistance struggles to address its multifaceted challenges, including duplicative resources, uncoordinated communication, unregulated staff expertise and safety, financial waste, and poor-quality metrics and care delivery. Implementation science provides an exciting and underutilized approach that can be applied to address these challenges, by studying how to effectively design, implement, optimize, and scale evidence-based interventions.

Since the influenza pandemic in 1968, influenza A(H3N2) viruses have become endemic. In this state, H3N2 viruses continuously evolve to overcome immune pressure as a result of prior infection or vaccination, as is evident from the accumulation of mutations in the surface glycoproteins hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). However, phylogenetic studies have also demonstrated ongoing evolution in the influenza A(H3N2) virus RNA polymerase complex genes.

Brentuximab vedotin (BV) monotherapy (BV-M) and combination (BV-C) therapies are safe and effective for classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) and CD30-expressing peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs). Although the sample sizes have been small (12-29 patients), in clinical studies, response rates of 53-88% have been reported for BV retreatment in patients with an initial BV response. We evaluated the real-world characteristics and treatment patterns of cHL/PTCL patients who received BV and were retreated in the United States.

Variability in brain structure is associated with the capacity for behavioral change. However, a causal link between specific brain areas and behavioral change (such as motor learning) has not been demonstrated. We hypothesized that greater gray matter volume of a primary motor cortex (M1) area active during a hand motor learning task is positively correlated with subsequent learning of the task, and that the disruption of this area blocks learning of the task.

US practice adoption of patient-engagement strategies and spending for adults with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Health Aff Sch

July 2023

Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Dartmouth College, 1 Medical Center Dr, Lebanon, NH 03756, United States.

Patient-engagement strategies are being encouraged by payers and governments, but with limited evidence about whether practice adoption of these strategies impacts utilization and spending. We examine the association of physician practice adoption of patient-engagement strategies (low vs moderate vs high) with potentially preventable utilization and total spending for patients with type 2 diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease using US physician practice survey (n = 2086) and Medicare fee-for-service (n = 736 269) data. In adjusted analyses, there were no differences in potentially preventable utilization associated with practice adoption of patient-engagement strategies.

Huntington's Disease (HD) is caused by an abnormal expansion of the polyglutamine (polyQ) domain within the first exon of the huntingtin protein (htt). This expansion promotes disease-related htt aggregation into amyloid fibrils and the formation of proteinaceous inclusion bodies within neurons. Fibril formation is a complex heterogenous process involving an array of aggregate species such as oligomers, protofibrils, and fibrils.

Neuroimaging Features of Cytokine-related Diseases.

Radiographics

June 2024

From the Department of Radiology, Division of Neuroradiology (M.K., R.K., A.B., T.G., S.C., K.Y., J.K., T.M.), and Department of Pathology (P.E.), University of Michigan, 1500 E Medical Center Dr, UH B2, Ann Arbor, MI 48109; Department of Radiology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan (M.K., R.K., S.C., K.Y., O.A.); Department of Radiology, The Jikei University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan (A.B., T.G.); and Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Hokkaido University Graduate School of Medicine, Sapporo, Japan (T.H.).

Cytokines are small secreted proteins that have specific effects on cellular interactions and are crucial for functioning of the immune system. Cytokines are involved in almost all diseases, but as microscopic chemical compounds they cannot be visualized at imaging for obvious reasons. Several imaging manifestations have been well recognized owing to the development of cytokine therapies such as those with bevacizumab (antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor) and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells and the establishment of new disease concepts such as interferonopathy and cytokine release syndrome.
