Looking Back, Moving Forward: Challenges and Opportunities for Global Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control.

Viruses

August 2024

Divisions of Cancer Prevention and Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, US National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, 9609 Medical Center Dr., Room 5E410, Rockville, MD 20850, USA.

Despite the introduction of Pap testing for screening to prevent cervical cancer in the mid-20th century, cervical cancer remains a common cause of cancer-related mortality and morbidity globally. This is primarily due to differences in access to screening and care between low-income and high-income resource settings, resulting in cervical cancer being one of the cancers with the greatest health disparity. The discovery of human papillomavirus (HPV) as the near-obligate viral cause of cervical cancer can revolutionize how it can be prevented: HPV vaccination against infection for prophylaxis and HPV testing-based screening for the detection and treatment of cervical pre-cancers for interception.

Subcellular compartmentalization is a universal feature of all cells. Spatially distinct compartments, be they lipid- or protein-based, enable cells to optimize local reaction environments, store nutrients, and sequester toxic processes. Prokaryotes generally lack intracellular membrane systems and usually rely on protein-based compartments and organelles to regulate and optimize their metabolism.

No study has investigated the length of time it takes to diagnose multiple sclerosis (MS) or neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorder (NMOSD, aquaporin 4 antibody disease or myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease, MOGAD) following the onset of de novo optic neuritis (ON). Minimizing the time between ON and downstream diagnoses needs urgency since early diagnosis equals early treatment. The time elapsed from ON to a subsequent diagnosis of MS/NMOSD was estimated through analysis of retrospective data collected from the Axon Registry (AR) of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and from the University of Kentucky (UK), Lexington.

Local organization of spatial and shape information in the primate prefrontal cortex.

Cereb Cortex

September 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Vanderbilt University, 2201 West End Ave, Nashville TN 37235, United States.

The current understanding of sensory and motor cortical areas has been defined by the existence of topographical maps across the brain surface, however, higher cortical areas, such as the prefrontal cortex, seem to lack an equivalent organization, and only limited evidence of functional clustering of neurons with similar stimulus properties is evident in them. We thus sought to examine whether neurons that represent similar spatial and object information are clustered in the monkey prefrontal cortex and whether such an organization only emerges as a result of training. To this end, we analyzed neurophysiological recordings from male macaque monkeys before and after training in spatial and shape working memory tasks.

Center for Biomedical Imaging and Neuromodulation, Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research, 140 Old Orangeburg Rd, Orangeburg, NY 10962, United States.

Audiovisual (AV) interaction has been shown in many studies of auditory cortex. However, the underlying processes and circuits are unclear because few studies have used methods that delineate the timing and laminar distribution of net excitatory and inhibitory processes within areas, much less across cortical levels. This study examined laminar profiles of neuronal activity in auditory core (AC) and parabelt (PB) cortices recorded from macaques during active discrimination of conspecific faces and vocalizations.

Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) is a useful technique for detecting infectious microorganisms in human fluids since it performs similarly to conventional PCR, the results are obtained faster and no thermocyclers or complex devices are required. Since only two isothermal blocks (95 °C to lyse cells and 65 °C for DNA amplification) are needed, LAMP is particularly suited for applications in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). To validate such assumption, we first designed and tested Arduino-controlled LAMP thermoblocks to process a considerable number of samples simultaneously with a low-energy consumption to enable routine use under worst-case conditions (no main power source and low ambient temperatures).
