Experimentally-evidenced personality alterations following meningioma resection: A case report.

Cortex

November 2023

Department of Neurosurgery, Geneva University Medical Center & Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Personality changes following neurosurgical procedures remain poorly understood and pose a major concern for patients, rendering a strong need for predictive biomarkers. Here we report a case of a female patient in her 40s who underwent resection of a large sagittal sinus meningioma with bilateral extension, including resection and ligation of the superior sagittal sinus, that resulted in borderline personality disorder. Importantly, we captured clinically-observed personality changes in a series of experiments assessing self-other voice discrimination, one of the experimental markers for self-consciousness.

Spinal cord motion and CSF flow in the cervical spine of 70 healthy participants.

NMR Biomed

Department of Neurology and Neurophysiology, Medical Center-Faculty of Medicine, University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany.

Pulsatile spinal cord and CSF velocities related to the cardiac cycle can be depicted by phase-contrast MRI. Among patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension, we have recently described relevant differences compared with healthy controls in segment C2/C3. The method might be a promising tool to solve clinical and diagnostic ambiguities.

Postsurgical radiotherapy (RT) has been early proven to prevent local tumor recurrence, initially performed with whole brain RT (WBRT). Subsequent to disadvantageous cognitive sequalae for the patient and the broad distribution of modern linear accelerators, focal irradiation of the tumor has omitted WBRT in most cases. In many studies, the effectiveness of local RT of the resection cavity, either as single-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or hypo-fractionated stereotactic RT (hFSRT), has been demonstrated to be effective and safe.

Distressing intrusive memories of a traumatic event are one of the hallmark symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. Thus, it is crucial to identify early interventions that prevent the occurrence of intrusive memories. Both, sleep and sleep deprivation have been discussed as such interventions, yet previous studies yielded contradicting effects.

Purpose: To quantify visual performance of patients with achromatopsia at various contrast and luminance combinations typical for daily living conditions, in comparison to controls, and to measure beneficial effects of short-wavelength cutoff filter glasses used by patients with achromatopsia to reduce glare sensation.

Methods: Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was tested with Landolt rings using an automated device (VA-CAL test). The visual acuity space was assessed for each participant with and without filter glasses (transmission >550 nm) at 46 contrast-luminance combinations (18%-95%; 0-10,000 cd/m2).

In 1995, Remer and Manz reported potential renal acid load (PRAL) values of various foods, quantifying their estimated impact on acid-base balance. Their estimation considered ionic dissociation, sulphur metabolism and intestinal absorption rates for several micronutrients and proteins. Notably, PRAL values are based on food content data from the early 1990s and may nowadays no longer adequately reflect accurate estimates.

The health effects of dairy products are still a matter of scientific debate owing to inconsistent findings across trials. Therefore, this systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to compare the effects of different dairy products on markers of cardiometabolic health. A systematic search was conducted in 3 electronic databases [MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Web of Science; search date: 23 September 2022].

Kinship analysis from very low-coverage ancient sequences has been possible up to the second degree with large uncertainties. We propose a new, accurate, and fast method, correctKin, to estimate the kinship coefficient and the confidence interval using low-coverage ancient data. We perform simulations and also validate correctKin on experimental modern and ancient data with widely different genome coverages (0.

Public information needs and preferences on COVID-19: a cross-sectional study.

BMC Public Health

February 2023

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Interdisciplinary Center for Health Sciences, Institute of Health and Nursing Science, Magdeburgerstraße 8, 06112, Halle (Saale), Germany.

Background: Right from the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic the general public faced the challenge to find reliable and understandable information in the overwhelming flood of information. To enhance informed decision-making, evidence-based information should be provided. Aim was to explore the general public's information needs and preferences on COVID-19 as well as the barriers to accessing evidence-based information.

In 1985 to 1986, the CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study enrolled 5115 Black or White participants, including 2788 women, aged 18 to 30 years. Over the following 35 years, the CARDIA study amassed extensive longitudinal data on women's reproductive milestones, spanning menarche to menopause. Although not initially conceived as a study of women's health, >75 CARDIA study publications address relationships between reproductive factors and events with cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, subclinical and clinical cardiovascular disease, and social determinants of health.

Germline TP53 pathogenic variants and breast cancer: A narrative review.

Cancer Treat Rev

March 2023

Department of Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties (DiMI), School of Medicine, University of Genova, Genoa, Italy; Department of Medical Oncology, U.O. Clinica di Oncologia Medica, IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, Genoa, Italy.

Approximately 10% of breast cancers are associated with the inheritance of a pathogenic variant (PV) in one of the breast cancer susceptibility genes. Multiple breast cancer predisposing genes, including TP53, are responsible for the increased breast cancer risk. Tumor protein-53 (TP53) germline PVs are associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a rare autosomal dominant inherited cancer predisposition syndrome associated with early-onset pediatric and multiple primary cancers such as soft tissue and bone sarcomas, breast cancer, brain tumors, adrenocortical carcinomas and leukemias.

Electronic address:

Background: Various formalisms have been developed to represent clinical practice guideline recommendations in a computer-interpretable way. However, none of the existing formalisms leverage the structured and computable information that emerge from the evidence-based guideline development process. Thus, we here propose a FHIR-based format that uses computer-interpretable representations of the knowledge artifacts that emerge during the process of evidence-based guideline development to directly serve as the basis of evidence-based recommendations.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed the effectiveness of the modified ACC/AHA lesion classification as a way to predict short- and long-term outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with second-generation drug-eluting stents.
  • Data from 8,516 patients revealed that those with complex lesions (B2/C) experienced higher instances of target lesion failure (TLF) compared to those with noncomplex lesions (A/B1) at multiple follow-up points (30 days, 1 year, and 5 years).
  • The findings suggest that the historical ACC/AHA classification system remains relevant for predicting clinical outcomes after PCI, particularly highlighting worse outcomes for complex lesions after 5 years.

Observational and clinical evidence that plant-based nutrition reduces dietary acid load.

J Nutr Sci

November 2022

Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolism, Department of General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine and Neonatology, Faculty of Medicine, Medical Center, University of Freiburg, Freiburg 79106, Germany.

Contemporary diets in Western countries are largely acid-inducing and deficient in potassium alkali salts, resulting in low-grade metabolic acidosis. The chronic consumption of acidogenic diets abundant in animal-based foods (meats, dairy, cheese and eggs) poses a substantial challenge to the human body's buffering capacities and chronic retention of acid wherein the progressive loss of bicarbonate stores can cause cellular and tissue damage. An elevated dietary acid load (DAL) has been associated with systemic inflammation and other adverse metabolic conditions.
