Evaluation of the results of tongue reconstruction using local flaps following partial glossectomy.

North Clin Istanb

August 2024

Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Sisli Memorial Hospital, Istanbul, Turkiye.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated tongue reconstruction outcomes in 7 patients with tongue cancer who underwent partial glossectomy using primary closure and local tissue rearrangement.
  • None of the patients experienced lasting speech or significant swallowing issues, even with a reduction of 33% to 50% in tongue length.
  • The findings suggest that microvascular flaps are unnecessary for patients with less than 50% tongue length reduction after partial glossectomy.

Although advanced technologies and surgical procedures are used, cholesteatoma is a disease with the possibility of recurrence. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term effect of sodium 2-mercaptoethane sulfonate (MESNA) on cholesteatoma surgery. Patients who underwent cholesteatoma surgery between January 2009 and July 2014 by the same surgeon were divided into 2 groups: those where MESNA was used and those where it was not.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of injecting satellite myoblasts (SM) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into rats with chronic rotator cuff (RC) tears to improve muscle recovery and reduce fat degeneration.
  • After standardized surgery and treatment, the rats were monitored for 14 weeks to assess the recovery of muscle mass and reduction of adipose tissue in those treated with SM and MSC compared to a control group.
  • Results showed that the combination of surgical repair with SM and MSC injections significantly enhanced muscle mass and tendon healing while reducing fat tissue, offering a potential new approach for treating chronic RC injuries.

Embryonic microenvironment suppresses YY1 and YY1-related genes in prostate cancer stem cells.

Pathol Res Pract

August 2024

Van Yuzuncu Yil University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Histology and Embryology, Van 65090, Turkey. Electronic address:

Yin yang 1 (YY1), a transcription factor, plays crucial roles in cell fate specification, differentiation, and pluripotency during embryonic development. It is also involved in tumorigenesis, drug resistance, metastasis, and relapse caused by cancer stem cells (CSCs), particularly in prostate cancer (PCa). Targeting YY1 could potentially eliminate prostate CSCs (PCSCs) and provide novel therapeutic approaches.

Objective: While the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has generally resulted in milder illness among children than adults, persistent respiratory symptoms have been increasingly reported in this population.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, single-center cohort study focusing on children experiencing prolonged respiratory symptoms after contracting COVID-19. Spirometry, 6- minute walk tests (6MWTs), and tests of lung volume, the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO), and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) were performed on COVID-19 survivors at least 4 weeks after infection and a group of healthy control subjects.

May 2024

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine, Hospital, Prof. Dr. Suleyman Yalcin Sehir Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of the antioxidant thymoquinone on treated and untreated kidneys on histological and oxidative parameters as well as Kidney Injury Molecule (KIM-1) levels in an experimental unilateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) with resultant hydronephrosis (HN) model. In adherence to the guidelines, 34 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups which were named accordingly: "CO" (corn oil), "TQ" (thymoquinone and corn oil), "HNCO" (UPJO-HN and corn oil), "HNTQ" (UPJO-HN, thymoquinone and corn oil). Histologically, pelvic epithelial damage, glomerular shrinkage and sclerosis, tubular damage, interstitial edema-inflammation-fibrosis (IEIF), and vascular congestion were assessed.

December 2023

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul, Türkiye.

The feet are complex structures that transmit loads transferred by other parts of the body to the ground and are involved in many static and dynamic activities, such as standing and walking. The contact area and pressure changes between the feet and the ground surface can be measured using pedobarographic devices. With pedobarographic examinations, it is possible to obtain a wide range of information needed to support clinical evaluation and diagnostic tests in physical medicine and rehabilitation practice.
