Kombucha is a fermented beverage with health effects, made mainly from green tea and black tea; however, it can also be made from other leaves such as those of jackfruit and soursop, which are not used even though they have been reported to have positive health effects. Due to the above, in this work "kombucha" beverages based on jackfruit and/or soursop leaves were developed and analyzed to take advantage of these by-products. It was found that fermentation produced significant changes, being the optimal kombucha formulation green tea with soursop leaves (GTKS), obtaining a higher content of antioxidant compounds (mainly catechin, rutin and shikimic acid) and greater ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) (1.

Introduction: Given the risks of cardiovascular disease among pediatric kidney transplant recipients, we evaluated whether there was an association between rapid weight gain (RWG) following kidney transplantation and the development of obesity and hypertension among children enrolled in the North American Pediatric Renal Trials and Collaborative Studies (NAPRTCS) registry.

Methods: This retrospective analysis of the NAPRTCS transplant cohort assessed for RWG in the first year post-transplant and evaluated for obesity and hypertension in children with and without RWG up to 5 years post-transplant. We evaluated three separate eras (1986-1999, 2000-2009, and 2010-2021).

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) atrophy is a significant cause of human blindness worldwide, occurring in polygenic diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and monogenic diseases such as Stargardt diseases (STGD1) and late-onset retinal degeneration (L-ORD). The patient-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)-derived RPE (iRPE) model exhibits many advantages in understanding the cellular basis of pathological mechanisms of RPE atrophy. The iRPE model is based on iPSC-derived functionally mature and polarized RPE cells that reproduce several features of native RPE cells, such as phagocytosis of photoreceptor outer segments (POS) and replenishment of visual pigment.

Identification of modulators of the ALT pathway through a native FISH-based optical screen.

Cell Rep

December 2024

Laboratory of Genome Integrity, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD 20892, USA. Electronic address:

A significant portion of human cancers utilize a recombination-based pathway, alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT), to extend telomeres. To gain further insights into this pathway, we developed a high-throughput imaging-based screen named TAILS (telomeric ALT in situ localization screen) to identify genes that either promote or inhibit ALT activity. Screening over 1,000 genes implicated in DNA transactions, TAILS reveals both well-established and putative ALT modulators.

Computer-Aided Drug Design Center, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, University of Maryland Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland 21201, United States.

Drug efficacy often correlates better with dissociation kinetics than binding affinity alone. To study binding kinetics computationally, it is necessary to identify all of the possible ligand dissociation pathways. The site identification by ligand competitive saturation (SILCS) method involves the precomputation of a set of maps (FragMaps), which describe the free energy landscapes of typical chemical functionalities in and around a target protein or RNA.

State Key Laboratory of Mesoscience and Engineering, Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Science s, Beijing 100190, China.

To understand the mechanism of self-assembly and to predict the evolutionary pattern of the fusion-fission system over a long period of time, studying the dynamics of these processes is of great significance. The trajectories from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of self-assembly processes contain numerous latent fusion and fission events. To analyze the fusion and fission events from the simulated trajectory, in this article, a dynamic clustering approach was developed by comparing the changes of monomer composition within clusters over simulated time.
