Differential effects of tibia varus deformity on clinical outcomes following high tibial osteotomy and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty for moderate medial compartment osteoarthritis with moderate varus alignment.

Introduction: There is a lack of clinical evidence supporting the decision-making process between high tibial osteotomy (HTO) and unicomparmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) in gray zone indication, such as moderate medial osteoarthritis with moderate varus alignment. This study compared the outcomes between HTO and UKA in such cases and assessed the risk factor for not maintaining clinical improvements.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 65 opening-wedge HTOs and 55 UKAs with moderate medial osteoarthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≥ 3 and Ahlback grade < 3) and moderate varus alignment (5°< Hip-Knee-Ankle angle < 10°) over 3 years follow-up.

Giant encephalocele in newborns: prenatal diagnosis, management and outcome.

Background: A giant encephalocele associated with Chiari malformation is a rare congenital anomaly from a cephalad neural tube defect. Early prenatal diagnosis and parental counseling are essential; as early surgical intervention can improve outcomes.

Local excision for T1 rectal cancer: A population-based study of practice patterns and oncological outcomes.

A parallelized field-programmable gate array (FPGA) architecture is proposed to realize an ultra-fast, compact, and low-cost dual-channel ultra-wideband (UWB) pulsed-radar system. This approach resolves the main shortcoming of current FPGA-based radars, namely their low processing throughput, which leads to a significant loss of data provided by the radar receiver. The architecture is integrated with an in-house UWB pulsed radar operating at a sampling rate of 20 gigasamples per second (GSa/s).

Dereplication of Natural Product Antifungals via Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Chemical Genomics.

Recently expanded reports of multidrug-resistant fungal infections underscore the need to develop new and more efficient methods for antifungal drug discovery. A ubiquitous problem in natural product drug discovery campaigns is the rediscovery of known compounds or their relatives; accordingly, we have integrated Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for structural dereplication and Yeast Chemical Genomics for bioprocess evaluation into a screening platform to identify such compounds early in the screening process. We identified 450 fractions inhibiting and the resistant strains of and among more than 40,000 natural product fractions.

An electronic survey was used to collect information on their demographics, practice, and clinical management characteristics from clinicians from 17 October through 28 November 2022. Background: Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder due to a deficiency of α-galactosidase A (α-gal A) activity. Our goal was to correct the enzyme deficiency in Fabry patients by transferring the cDNA for α-gal A into their CD34+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). Overexpression of α-gal A leads to secretion of the hydrolase; which can be taken up and used by uncorrected bystander cells.

Goal: While studies have examined quality and health outcomes related to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS's) Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP) Program, a significant gap exists in the literature regarding the relationship between pay-for-performance initiatives and hospital financial performance in the program's Efficiency and Cost Reduction domain. This study examined the association between hospitals' cost inefficiency and participation in the HVBP Program by estimating the probability and magnitude of improvement or achievement in the program's Efficiency and Cost Reduction domain.

Methods: The 2014-2019 Efficiency and Cost Reduction domain data were obtained from CMS and merged with the American Hospital Association's Annual Survey Database.

Systematic review of guidelines for care of intersex people in the emergency department.

Purpose: Intersex people make up 1.7-4% of the population of North America. A recent scoping review of emergency department (ED) relevant literature for the care of sexual and gender minorities found almost no representation of this population.

Bi-hormonal islet endocrine cells have been proposed to represent an intermediate state of cellular transdifferentiation, enabling an increase in beta-cell mass in response to severe metabolic stress. Beta-cell plasticity and regenerative capacity are thought to decrease with age. We investigated the ontogeny of bi-hormonal islet endocrine cell populations throughout the human lifespan.

Evidence for targeting autonomic dysfunction in systemic sclerosis: A scoping review.

Autonomic dysfunction is a common and early complication among patients with systemic sclerosis, suggesting that it may play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease and be a potential target for therapeutic interventions. Although the true prevalence of autonomic dysfunction among patients with systemic sclerosis is still unclear, it is estimated that as many as 80% of patients may be affected. Autonomic dysfunction may lead to widespread multi-organ dysfunction through its effects on the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, sweat and salivary glands, and pupils.

Methods: This retrospective post hoc secondary analysis evaluated 108 patients with MDD or BD receiving the antidepressants vortioxetine, ketamine, or infliximab. Background: Environmental and occupational health (EOH) assessments increasingly utilize systematic review methods and structured frameworks for evaluating evidence about the human health effects of exposures. Methods: This was a multisite cross-sectional study of Chinese adults aged 40-80 years in the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Healthy Minds (CAHHM; January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2018) and Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiological-Mind (PURE-MIND; November 1, 2010, to July 31, 2015) cohorts living in Canada and China.

Association between clinical laboratory indicators and WOMAC scores in Qatar Biobank participants: The impact of testosterone and fibrinogen on pain, stiffness, and functional limitation.

Objectives: The association between baseline laboratory parameters and experienced well-being in healthy individuals remains uncertain. This study explored the relationship between clinical laboratory profiles and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores for pain, stiffness, and physical functional limitation in healthy individuals in Qatar.

Methods: Clinical laboratory data were collected from 1,764 Qatar Biobank participants who also completed the WOMAC questionnaire: lipid profiles (high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, cholesterol, and triglycerides), endocrine markers (TSH, T3, T4, estradiol, and testosterone), and two inflammatory markers (CRP and fibrinogen).
