Healthcare professional perspectives following implementation of an infection management care pathway for pediatric patients with cancer: a qualitative study.

Purpose: The Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) supported an effort to implement infection management care pathways based on clinical practice guidelines, to improve the consistency of infection management in pediatric cancer patients. The objective of this qualitative study was to describe the perspective of healthcare professionals (HCPs) following implementation.

Methods: Four tertiary pediatric oncology centers in Ontario, Canada, implemented the pathways.

An evaluation of a Transition to Foundations curriculum for first year pediatric residents in Competency Based Medical Education.

A Transition to Foundations (TTF) curriculum that includes didactic and simulation components prepares first-year pediatric residents for increased roles and responsibilities in the Foundations of Discipline stage of Competency Based Medical Education, including junior night float rotations. Simulations of acute presentations improve resident comfort before overnight on-call experiences.

The association of red and processed meat with gestational diabetes mellitus: Results from 2 Canadian birth cohort studies.

Objective: Red and processed meat is considered risk factors of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), but the evidence is inconclusive. We aimed to examine the association between red and processed meat intake and odds of GDM among South Asian and White European women living in Canada.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of pregnant women from two birth cohorts: SouTh Asian biRth cohorT (START; n = 976) and Family Atherosclerosis Monitoring In earLY life (FAMILY; n = 581).

"Filling in the gap": A qualitative case study about identity construction of siblings of youth with a neurodisability.

Introduction: In families of children with a neurodisability, siblings have unique experiences that can shape their identity. There is limited information about the developmental process of how siblings form their identity. This study aims to understand the identity construction of young siblings who have a sibling with a neurodisability.

The information needs of relatives of childhood cancer patients and survivors: A systematic review of quantitative evidence.

Objective: We aimed to: (1) summarize the quantitative evidence on the information needs of relatives of childhood cancer patients, survivors, and children deceased from cancer; and (2) identify factors associated with these needs.

Methods: PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and CINAHL were systematically searched. The methodological quality of all included publications was assessed, and the extracted data were analyzed using narrative synthesis.

Expanding the phenotypic spectrum of NOTCH1 variants: clinical manifestations in families with congenital heart disease.

Pathogenic variants in NOTCH1 are associated with non-syndromic congenital heart disease (CHD) and Adams-Oliver syndrome (AOS). Relationship of Fatigue, Pain Interference, and Physical Disability in Children Newly Diagnosed With Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Objective: Our objectives were to quantify the relationships among fatigue, pain interference, and physical disability in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and to test whether fatigue mediates the relationship between pain interference and physical disability in JIA.

Methods: Patients enrolled within three months of JIA diagnosis in the Canadian Alliance of Pediatric Rheumatology Investigators (CAPRI) Registry between February 2017 and May 2023 were included. Their parents completed the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System fatigue and pain interference short proxy questionnaires and the Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire disability index at registry enrollment.

Cardiac arrhythmia and epilepsy genetic variants in sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.

Introduction: Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is the leading epilepsy-related cause of death, affecting approximately 1 per 1,000 individuals with epilepsy per year. Genetic variants that affect autonomic function, such as genes associated with cardiac arrhythmias, may predispose people with epilepsy to greater risk of both sudden cardiac death and SUDEP. Advances in next generation sequencing allow for the exploration of gene variants as potential biomarkers.

Long-Term Cardiovascular Outcomes in Children and Adolescents With Hypertension.

Importance: Hypertension affects 6% of all children, and its prevalence is increasing. Childhood hypertension tracks into adulthood and is associated with subclinical cardiovascular disease; however, there is a lack of evidence linking childhood hypertension to cardiovascular outcomes, which may contribute to underdiagnosis and undertreatment.

Purpose: Childhood cancer and its treatment can cause damage to the musculoskeletal system. We aimed to determine the incidence and prevalence of musculoskeletal health conditions (MSHC) in survivors, and to investigate differences by cancer-related characteristics.

Methods: We used data from the Childhood Cancer Registry and the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, including survivors (≥5 years since diagnosis; diagnosed 1976-2015 at <20 years of age) aged ≥15 years at study.

Capacity for the management of kidney failure in the International Society of Nephrology North America and the Caribbean region: report from the 2023 ISN Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA).

The International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas charts the availability and capacity of kidney care globally. In the North America and the Caribbean region, the Atlas can identify opportunities for kidney care improvement, particularly in Caribbean countries where structures for systematic data collection are lacking. In this third iteration, respondents from 12 of 18 countries from the region reported a 2-fold higher than global median prevalence of dialysis and transplantation, and a 3-fold higher than global median prevalence of dialysis centers.

Association of Fructosamine Levels With Glycemic Management in Children With Type 1 Diabetes as Determined by Continuous Glucose Monitoring: Results From the CGM TIME Trial.

Objective: Our aim in this study was to determine the correlation between serum fructosamine and average blood glucose, as measured by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in children with type 1 diabetes.

Methods: Ninety-seven blood samples were collected from 70 participants in the Timing of Initiation of continuous glucose Monitoring in Established pediatric diabetes (CGM TIME) Trial. Each eligible participant had 3 weeks of CGM data with at least 60% CGM adherence before blood collection.

Introduction: During the early coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, researchers cautioned about the potential neuroinvasive capability of the virus and long-term neurological consequences. Methods: We conducted a prospective study of 20 neonates who acquired severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during the first wave of the pandemic (April-July 2020).

Asymptomatic intraspinal epidermoid cyst in a 7-year-old male with juvenile idiopathic arthritis identified by an advanced physiotherapist practitioner: a case report.

Background: Pediatric intraspinal epidermoid cysts are rare with potential to cause life-altering outcomes if not addressed. Reports to date describe symptomatic presentations including loss of bladder or bowel function and motor and sensory losses. This case report identifies the diagnostic challenge of an asymptomatic intraspinal epidermoid cyst in the cauda equina region presenting in a 7-year-old male with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

A Study of Safety and Effectiveness of Evicel Fibrin Sealant as an Adjunctive Hemostat in Pediatric Surgery.

Development of a Value Assessment Framework for Pediatric Health Technologies Using Multicriteria Decision Analysis: Expanding the Value Lens for Funding Decision Making.

Objectives: A health technology assessment (HTA) does not systematically account for the circumstances and needs of children and youth. To supplement HTA processes, we aimed to develop a child-tailored value assessment framework using a multicriteria decision analysis approach.

Methods: We constructed a multicriteria-decision-analysis-based model in multiple phases to create the Comprehensive Assessment of Technologies for Child Health (CATCH) framework.

Upregulation of the mTOR pathway has been shown to cause malformations of cortical development, medically refractory epilepsies, and neurodevelopmental disorders, collectively described as mTORopathies. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) serves as the prototypical mTORopathy.

Management of Pediatric Patients With Spontaneous Pneumomediastinum: A Retrospective Chart Review.

Purpose: Given the paucity of data on pediatric spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM), management is largely informed by extrapolation from adult studies or personal clinical experience, resulting in significant heterogeneity. The purpose of this study was to describe how pediatric patients with SPM are clinically managed at our institution and propose a treatment algorithm.
