Between February 1988 and May 1989, 17 consecutive patients with 18 tibial fractures were treated using the Ilizarov method and apparatus. Injuries included four closed fractures and 14 open fractures. There were three Grade I open, four Grade II open, and seven Grade III open tibial fractures.

The purpose of the current study was to review the safety of colonoscopy performed by nonfellowship-trained general surgeons. To address this issue, we reviewed more than 1,000 consecutive diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopies and recorded the complications. This was a multi-institutional study involving seven general surgeons, none of whom had had formal fellowship endoscopic training.

Fingertip amputation, with loss of the terminal pulp and bone exposure presents a difficult problem. Reconstruction with use of a local neurovascular island flap has been done in twenty-one patients to restore sensibility and function with preservation of length. All patients achieved two-point discrimination values within two millimeters of the normal contralateral fingertip, with adequate pad for pain-free pinch.

Six years of statistics on interlibrary lending and borrowing among basic unit health sciences libraries in Michigan are examined to determine the effect of the availability of an automated interlibrary loan system, DOCLINE, on interlibrary lending volume and patterns within Michigan. A trend analysis projection of expected volume is made and the predicted value compared with the actual value following the adoption of the DOCLINE system. Interlibrary loan (ILL) volume is tested to see if yearly volume increases are statistically significant.

Significant blood loss during total hip arthroplasty is usually unavoidable. Blood loss is even more of a problem during revision total hip arthroplasty. Using the Cell-Saver for retrieval of red blood cells to be used for autotransfusion during surgery is a safe and useful way of sparing donor blood transfusion.

High-pressure water-gun injection injuries are different from injection injuries that are caused by other agents, in that they are associated with extensive subcutaneous emphysema but only slight soft-tissue inflammation or destruction. The cases of six patients who had such an injury were reviewed. It was found that local irrigation and débridement, together with a short course of penicillin or a broad-spectrum cephalosporin, resulted in complete recovery from this relatively benign variant of high-pressure injection injury.

Joint infection secondary to sporotrichosis is quite rare. Recently there have been two reports of sporotrichosis arthritis in the literature. An early report of synovitis of the knee secondary to sporotrichosis without cutaneous or multifocal involvement appeared in 1957.
