Objective: Mechanisms for cancer related fatigue suggest that exercise but "not too much and not too little" could be effective. This study aimed to investigate feasibility and estimate the potential effects of a walking exercise program in people with advanced cancer and fatigue.

Design: A pilot randomized trial.

We report a case of hyperplastic callus mimicking osteosarcoma in the fibula of a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta type V. Among the various imaging modalities, computed tomography was the most useful in distinguishing this rare process from a malignant entity. In addition, simple radiographs demonstrated the presence of characteristic "zebra lines", a manifestation of cyclic bisphosphonate therapy during childhood.

Electronic address:

Objective: To identify geometric indices of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) on computed tomography that are associated with higher risk of rupture.

Methods: This retrospective case-control, institutional review board-approved study involved 63 cases with ruptured or symptomatic AAA and 94 controls with asymptomatic AAA. Three-dimensional models were generated from computed tomography segmentation and used for the calculation of 27 geometric indices.

Castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is invariably lethal and still poorly understood. IL-6/pSTAT3 appears critical as elevated IL-6 and pSTAT3 correlate with CRPC and poor prognosis. We previously reported on the Fer tyrosine kinase being an integral component of the IL-6 pathway in PC by controlling STAT3.

Vascular endothelial cell function in catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.

Case Rep Hematol

July 2013

Division of Haematology, Department of Medicine, McGill University Health Center (MUHC), 1650 Cedar Avenue, Montreal, QC, Canada H3G 1A4.

Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) is a rare autoimmune condition, which has been associated with a high mortality rate. However, with current management that includes a combination of anticoagulation, glucocorticoid administration, and plasma exchange, mortality rate has declined. Despite survival improvement with new generation immunosuppressive agents, their mechanisms of action are poorly defined, and CAPS is still considered a high-risk complication in patients known with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome.

Background: Glucocorticoid (GC)-induced osteonecrosis (ON) is an important complication of medical therapy. The exact pathomechanisms of ON has not been clearly elucidated. There is a need for a reproducible animal model that better approximates the clinical scenario.

Unlabelled: Institutionalization after hip fracture occurs in at least 30% of patients in the year following hospital discharge. We demonstrate that the risk of transfer to a long-term care facility, after adjustment for age and burden of co-morbidity, is also increased following fractures at other osteoporotic sites in men and women. For most fractures, men are at greater risk than women.

Mortality rates after incident non-traumatic fractures in older men and women.

Osteoporos Int

September 2011

Division of General Internal Medicine, McGill University Health Center (MUHC), 1650 Cedar Ave, Room B2-118, Montreal, QC, H3G 1A4, Canada.

Unlabelled: Non-traumatic fractures at typical osteoporotic sites are associated with increased mortality across all age groups, particularly in men. Furthermore, in certain age subgroups of women and men, this rate remained elevated beyond 5 years for fractures of the hip, vertebrae, humerus, and other sites.

Introduction: Increased mortality rates have been documented following non-traumatic hip, vertebral, and shoulder fractures.

Introduction: Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) occurs variably after exposure to corticosteroids. Microvascular thrombosis is a common pathological finding. Since systemic thrombophilia is only weakly linked with ANFH, we propose that microvascular vessel pathology may be more related to local endothelial dysfunction and femoral head apoptosis.

Effectiveness of antiresorptive agents in the prevention of recurrent hip fractures.

Osteoporos Int

December 2007

Division of Internal Medicine, McGill University Health Center (MUHC), 1650 Cedar Ave, Room B2-118, Montreal, QC, H3G 1A4, Canada.

Unlabelled: Hip fracture is associated with recurrent fractures and increased mortality. The results of our retrospective cohort study support the use of antiresorptive agents to prevent recurrent hip fractures in this population.

Introduction: Hip fracture, the most serious consequence of osteoporosis, is associated with recurrent fractures and increased mortality.

Lung cancer in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Lung Cancer

June 2007

McGill University Health Center (MUHC), Department of Medicine, Montreal, QC, Canada, and University Hospital, Lund, Sweden.

Background: Evidence points to a link between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and an increased risk of lung cancer. Our objective was to provide a brief report of the lung cancer cases from an SLE cohort, with respect to demographics, histology, and exposures to smoking and immunosuppressive medications.

Methods: Data were obtained from a multi-site international cohort study of over 9500 SLE patients from 23 centres.

Focal adhesion kinase is required for bombesin-induced prostate cancer cell motility.

Mol Cell Endocrinol

May 2005

Urologic Oncology Research Group, Urology Division, Departmentof Surgery, McGill University Health Center (MUHC) Research Institute, Montreal, QC, Canada H3G 1A4.

Clinical evidence links neuroendocrine differentiation (NED) to prostate cancer progression. In the prostate carcinoma PC-3 cell model, the action of the gastrin releasing peptide (GRP) analog, bombesin (BN), on the activation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and invasiveness suggests that this kinase might favor metastasis. Given that components of the FAK signalling pathway are also up regulated in prostate cancer, the aim of the present investigation was to test if FAK function is required for BN-induced motility in PC-3 cells.

Antagonism of sevoflurane anaesthesia by physostigmine: effects on the auditory steady-state response and bispectral index.

Br J Anaesth

October 2003

Department of Anesthesia, McGill University and McGill University Health Center (MUHC), Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Background: Physostigmine, a centrally acting anticholinesterase, antagonizes the hypnotic effect of propofol, as shown by the return of consciousness (response to commands) or wakefulness (spontaneous eye-opening without response to commands) and by recovery of auditory evoked potentials (40 Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR)) and the bispectral index (BIS). We measured the effects of physostigmine on the hypnotic effect of inhaled volatile anaesthetics, using sevoflurane as the representative agent.

Methods: Eight healthy volunteers received sevoflurane adjusted to produce loss of consciousness.

We studied the effects of the neuropeptide arginine-vasopressin (AVP) on the long-term potentiation (LTP) paradigm in the dentate gyrus (DG) of urethane intact anesthetized rats. Intracerebroventricular injection of 1 microg of the hormone in 1 microl of physiological solution 3 min before tetanization, produced a significant increase in both components of the perforant path-evoked potentials (EP) in the DG. The effects were already evident 1 min after tetanization.
